Duplicate Content - But it isn't!
-
Hi All,
I have a site that releases alerts for particular problem/events/happenings. Due to legal stuff we keep the majority of the content the same on each of these event pages.
The URLs are all different but it keeps coming back as duplicate content. The canonical tag is not right (i dont think for this)

Hi, I thought as much! Thanks for that, we are actually redesigning these Alerts at the moment and each page will be specific with different content. It sounds like there is going to be nothing i can do about the historical content without working my way through it!

Hi there Astute Media,
Unfortunately, what you have here is the definition of duplicate content. The body text of the page is exactly the same on both pages. Even though your titles are different (and even then, not by much), Google sees that the body text is exactly the same.
It doesn't help that the page has 2 short paragraphs of text, either. These two things are big red flags to Google that a website is spam - but there are ways you can fix this.
My suggestion would be to write something specific to each page. Meaning, the second page is for a hotel rather than the resort - maybe add information about the hotel, or what general complaints have been filed. Another option would be to have 1 page with the information in your body text, and have links to pages that go to the specific resort/hotel/etc. This would require a redesign of your site's navigation, so you may wish to go with the prior rather than the latter.
Either way, I can tell you that you DO need to do something to fix the duplication. Good luck!

With the release of so many domains from .expert through to even .xyz why don't we see many around the top of SERPS?
And should I use one of these to create a nice looking site, invest time, energy, resource, money or will I simply regret it later and stick to the main TLDs? First question on Moz (yey)

Hiding body copy with a 'read more' drop down option
Hi I just want to confirm how potentially damaging using java script to hide lots of on page body copy with a 'read more' button is ? As per other moz Q&A threads i was told that best not to use Javascript to do this & instead "if you accomplish this with CSS and collapsible/expandable <DIV> tags it's totally fine" so thats what i advised my clients dev. However i recently noticed a big drop in rankings aprox 1 weeks after dev changing the body copy format (hiding alot of it behind a 'read more' button) so i asked them to confirm how they did implement it and they said: "done in javascript but on page load the text is defaulting to show" (which is contrary to my instructions) So how likely is it that this is causing problems ? since coincides with ranking drop OR if text is defaulting to show it should be ok/not cause probs ? And should i request that they redo as originally instructed (css & collapsible divs) asap ? All Best Dan

Many have stolen our content. Rewrite vs. DMCA content removal?
Hello, We own a medical tourism website and many other sites have stolen (copied and pasted) our content. Our content is more than 2 years old, so we thought we could rewrite the content - but Which is a more wiser decision from you guys' experience? Archive our current content at a different URL and upload a fresh content in the current URL Claim our originality to Google and ask the stolen sites to remove our content. Thank you and appreciate your time.

Using content for cliche' terms, or content found on other sites
howdy, I have a basic question about using content found on other websites for your own use. I have started a pick up lines website for guys to search for pickup lines to use on girls. Anyways, my website has many, if anything a lot, of the same exact pick up lines as all my competitors are using. If I use the same pick up lines found on their site could i be penalized for this as far as SEO? thanks and hope to hear back

Duplicate page titles
We have search results pages on our site. They share the same page title, there is no real differentiator between the result pages, other than page 1, page 2 etc. How do we de-dup the titles? just add page 1/2/3 etc to the end of them?

How could I avoid the "Duplicate Page Content" issue on the search result pages of a webshop site?
My webshop site was just crawled by Roger, and it found 683 "Duplicate Page Content" issues. Most of them are result pages of different product searches, that are not really identical, but very similar to each other. Do I have to worry about this? If yes, how could I make the search result pages different? IS there any solution for this? Thanks: Zoltan
