404 errors
-
Hi, we have plenty of 404 errors. We just deal with those that are of the highest priority (the ones that have high page authority). We have also a lot of errors like this: http://www.weddingrings.com/www.yoy-search.com . Does it make sense to redirect those to the home page or leave them as an 404 error?
-
- Fix broken internal and external links, like the Yoy-search url. That should solve one area of your 404 problems
- Identify why you have 404's in the first place. Find the root of the problem. Are these dead product pages? Definitely 301 them to the correct URL. If the product isn't there, consider redirecting to the homepage (or asking the linking site to change the URL to a relevant page) or showing a custom 404 page to show their other relevant offers.
-
I second that...as I created a lot of 404's by not knowing to add http...2012...mistakes were made that year.
-
I'd say it depends on how much work would be involved. If "a lot of erros" means a 100, I would redirect them to your homepage, especially since it looks like that's where they wanted to go anyway. If it's 1,000's, I'd build out a nice 404 landing page. Since you're selling wedding rings, I bet you could come up with a pretty awesome one; there's a lot of material there.
Happy Friday!

This is probably due to to a relative URL being used in the site code. When relative URLs are used improperly, you usually see the url added to the end of the correct http url. Make sure to use http in your anchor tag.

When serving a 410 for page gone, should I serve an error page?
I'm removing a bunch of old & rubbish pages and was going to serve 410 to tell google they're gone (my understanding is it'll get them out of the index a bit quicker than a 404). I should still serve an error page though, right? Similar to a 404. That doesn't muddy the "gone" message that I'm giving Google? There's no need to 410 and die?

URL Errors Help - 350K Page Not Founds in 22 days
Got a good one for you all this time... For our site, Google Search Console is reporting 436,758 "Page Not Found" errors within the Crawl Error report. This is an increase of 350,000 errors in just 22 days (on Sept 21 we had 87,000 errors which was essentially consistently at that number for the previous 4 months or more). Then on August 22nd the errors jumped to 140,000, then climbed steadily from the 26th until the 31st reaching 326,000 errors, and then climbed again slowly from Sept 2nd until today's 436K. Unfortunately I can only see the top 1,000 erroneous URLs in the console, of which they seem to be custom Google tracking URLs my team uses to track our pages. A few questions: 1. Is there anyway to see the full list of 400K URLs Google is reporting they cannot find?

No designated 404 page, but any made-up URL path displays homepage Good / Bad?
I have a custom website where if you type in companyxyz.com/_any-made-up-url _it displays the homepage. So then you will see the homepage and in the URL bar the made up URL path remains visible "companyxyz.com/any-made-up-url" Is this good or bad or not an issue?

Productontology URLs are 404 erroring, are there alternatives to denote new schema categories?
Our team QA specialist recently noticing that the class identifier URLs via productontology are 404ing out saying that the "There is no Wikipedia article for (particular property)". They are even 404ing for productontology URLs that are examples on the productontology.com website! Example: http://www.productontology.org/id/Apple The 404 page says that the wiki entry for "Apple" doesn't exist (lol) Does anybody know what is going on with this website? This service was extremely helpful for creating additionalType categories for schema categories that don't exist on schema.org. Are there any alternatives to productontology now that these class identifier URLs are 404ing? Thanks

Rich Snippets Not Displaying - Price Error?
We recently implemented Schema.org/product on our site (www.evo.com). In the Google Webmaster Tools Structured Data report we’re getting lots of errors: http://screencast.com/t/Z3QJBctjUvP which I believe is preventing our rich snippets (price, availability, ratings) from showing in search results. When I click into the “Product” data type on the Structured Data report I see that there’s 2 errors: missing price and missing best or worst rating: http://screencast.com/t/SuHVYFLFO5D We are adding the itemprop=“bestRating” code which should take care of the ‘missing best or worst rating’ error. The missing price error is what I want to ask about. There’s a couple strange things here (using this URL as example : http://www.evo.com/skis/line-sir-francis-bacon.aspx - which has been indexed since the code was added): 1) The Webmaster Tools report is finding the schema.org/offer data type and is recognizing the InStock and OutOfStock property of this: http://screencast.com/t/xtHouzeL37q BUT price is not being detected. 2) When I enter the URL into the Structured Data Testing Tool it does detect price: https://www.google.com/webmasters/tools/richsnippets?url=http://www.evo.com/skis/line-sir-francis-bacon.aspx 3) When I fetch the page as GoogleBot itemprop=“price”is present: http://screencast.com/t/Hnqda95N My hunch is that the reason our Rich Snippets are not showing is because of the “price” error. The “?” by the error in WMT says: “This property is missing in the html markup or was not properly highlighted in the Data Highlighter. This can prevent the rich snippet from appearing” Does anyone have an idea why we’re getting the “price” error – or anything else that could prevent our Rich Snippets from displaying? Thanks so much! http://screencast.com/t/SuHVYFLFO5D

Huge increase in server errors and robots.txt
Hi Moz community! Wondering if someone can help? One of my clients (online fashion retailer) has been receiving huge increase in server errors (500's and 503's) over the last 6 weeks and it has got to the point where people cannot access the site because of server errors. The client has recently changed hosting companies to deal with this, and they have just told us they removed the DNS records once the name servers were changed, and they have now fixed this and are waiting for the name servers to propagate again. These errors also correlate with a huge decrease in pages blocked by robots.txt file, which makes me think someone has perhaps changed this and not told anyone... Anyone have any ideas here? It would be greatly appreciated! 🙂 I've been chasing this up with the dev agency and the hosting company for weeks, to no avail. Massive thanks in advance 🙂

Any downsides of (permanent)redirecting 404 pages to more generic pages(category page)
Hi, We have a site which is somewhat like e-bay, they have several categories and advertisements posted by customers/ client. These advertisements disappear over time and turn into 404 pages. We have the option to redirect the user to the corresponding category page, but we're afraid of any negative impact of this change. Are there any downsides, and is this really the best option we have? Thanks in advance!
