SEO for franchises
-
I'm working with a client that's a franchise owner. His website is strictly controlled by the parent company, so no room to add unique content or optimize it for the area. I'm getting stumped for link building options. Anybody ran into this before? If so, any suggestions?
-
We're running TV, radio, and print ads for them. The content for the TV and print ads come from the parent company, and we customize them to fit the local market. We also handle the local SEO for them and run their citations through Moz Local. They do PPC, but it's ran by the parent company. They're also pretty good about getting reviews for Google+ and other review sites.

If these woodworkers can do it, you can!
First question, this franchisee - what other marketing do they do?
-
Thanks, Wil! It's the furniture industry. Not super high end, but high end for their market here in Utah.
Also, the parent company is pretty strict on what they can set up outside of the subdomain. No separate Facebook page or Twitter account. Google+ is approved, since it ties into local SEO.
Any ideas would be much appreciated.

We've worked with a few companies who are the "parent company" we find it difficult for a whole different slew of reasons, might you be able to give us the industry and then maybe we can help you brainstorm?
-
That's always a challenging scenario.
You need to find ways to drive traffic to the site so you can start with their social pages or 3rd party blogs/your own set of domains/local magazine/forum posts/etc and put content and links to those.
-
That's really unfortunate that you can't get access to the landing page to determine keywords / content.
But yeah, I'd go with Google Places for Business and fill out all the information and get 5 reviews to become rated with the goal of being at the top of Local Search Results. In my experience, you'll have to ask 20-25 people that you have done business with to get 5 reviews.
Good luck!

Thanks for the advice! They've got a subdomain, but it's strictly a landing page. All the links send them to the corporate site for actual orders. There's a little wiggle room for the on page content, but everything has to be implemented by the parent company. We've got zero control over what we can put on there.

You can still do Google Places for Business and build reviews.
Often times the parent company will give you a subdomain, I'd try that. Or they have a page within the website dedicated to that location. There's several options here. I'd communicate to the parent company.
As far as link building, ideally you would want to send links to the subdomain (assuming they will give you one).

Changed the trailing slashes - how it effect SEO?
Hi, I'm doing a project called https://www.machinerygate.com/ Due to trailing slashes issues, our developer requests to remove the trailing slashes from the URLs. However, the homepage with and without trailing slashes the same effect right. How about the inner pages affect SEO. Because we just started to do SEO and not even one single link of Inner pages done with the process. However, for example, the URL for https://www.machinerygate.com/machinery/cranes/ is before with trailing slashes and it is on google indexed with trailing slashes. Due to some bug, google inspection tool has been not functioning nowadays and I'm finding hard to index the new URL without trailing slashes https://www.machinerygate.com/machinery/cranes to index on Google. If this gets indexed, how the URL with trailing slashes will be, does it automatically redirect to URL without trailing slashes or not? Please share your thought about this concern.

How does the background on my product photos impact SEO - step and repeat vs. plain background
I have a new e-commerce site and I'm focused on optimizing it for SEO. If I am taking product photos, will having a step-and-repeat (background with our logo repeated) in the background of the product impact how the images are scanned by Google? In other words, would I benefit from having a plain background behind my item shots vs. a backdrop with our logos all across it? I don't want Google to think I'm spamming my logo across all our items, but also want our photos to be recognized as ours. I want to gain SEO from my effort and definitely not hurt it! Thanks!

Negative Keywords for SEO
Hi Mozzers, I have a client that has a totally legit retail business and they are getting lots of traffic organically that is adult in nature and totally off subject. The reason for this is their domain name contains keywords which while work well for their brand, when reordered and couple with a another keyword (such as picture or image) they get traffic for searches that have nothing to do with them and are pretty awful in nature. If this was Adwords I'd add a negative in of course but how can I stop bad traffic coming to the site organically? Any ideas? Cheers B 🙂

Rebranding for Local SEO
I'm preparing to begin a rebranding project for a client who is changing their brand name, logo and primary domain name. They have dozens of locations (some that accept walk-in customers, and some that don't). What's the best place to get started? Once their rebranded website is published, should third-party sources like Acxiom & Localeze be addressed first, then move to Google+ Local, Bing Places, Yahoo Local, etc.? Is using schema for local business and the new company logo on their website a must-do action item? Just trying to be proactive & figure out the best process in order to maximize cost and time efficiency. Thank you.

What is The Time/Cost For SEO In Rebranding A Large Site
From an SEO agency perspective. What would be the estimated man hours and hard cost to rebrand a large site (1000+pages)? And all that would go into it, like 301 redirects and etc.? I have a pretty good idea, of what it would take and how perilous it could be from an SEO perspective. Because of anchor text / 301 redirects / organic potential traffic loss and etc. I just don't know the man hours and hard cost would be.

Acquired Premium Domain, question about Brand name change related to SEO
We recently acquired a premium domain name The domain we were operating on before had a lot of SEO done on it, as well as branding campaigns. Now that we have the premium domain, would it be wise to start doing SEO on the premium domain and discontinue old domain promotions if we plan on changing the brand name? to clear up any confusion, we own for example AAAFurnitureStore.com we acquired the premium domain: AAAFurniture.com should we redirect AAAFurnitureStore.com -> AAAFurniture.com or since we already have established presence/brand do opposite and redirect AAAFurniture.com -> AAAFurnitureStore.com and keep the brand name same as "AAA Furniture Store"?
