How can I drive organic traffic to a specific landing page?
-
HI,
I have a site which is attracting traffic for my target keywords but to the wrong pages.
I usually create a series of articles on the topic (10-15) an start getting organic traffic, but I have not been able to drive the traffic to the main page for that topic.
How can I get the main page rank over sub pages?
Thanks in advance!

Good, relevant links are definitely a strong signal for getting your page ranked higher. If you're seeing competitors who are ranking for "the exact page," I'd take a look and see what they are doing that's working so well for them.
For more info about better internal linking, I'd watch our webinar from August all about internal linking.

Ok Guys,
Thank you all for your inputs, I found three issues -
- Content on the main page is weaker. It is an introduction and list of the articles.
- Internal linking need to be better structured - would love to get some tips on this so will be searching for best practices.
- The sub pages are getting more traffic, social share etc and ranking better for long-tail and perhaps this is boosting them for the main keyword also.
I have seen on numerous sites that they have the exact page show up for the main keywords, I guess it is also because of lots of links to these pages. I don't have many links.
Any suggestions to correct this are welcome!

and that is precisely the reason for me asking John in that video about how to recognise things like this.
Its really bad that Google has removed keywords for referrers that use https (logged in to Google) as this basically makes it very hard for you to see what your customer was looking for when they landed on that page. Back in the day you could use that info to alert a user to a product page or some other clever tactic.
John also said in another hangout that they removed it because it was being abused and people were making millions of dynamic pages to scrape up traffic.
However I see no reason not to have it in WMT or Analytics, but it turns out that they don't want users to be able to do powerful keyword research. I personally feel that this is a backwards move on Google part.
Watch his advice in teh video above, its about 8 minutes long and he goes into detail about recognising if the page that you want to have ranking is the best option and how to make that happen.

All great technical replies, but don't forget to look at the content and consider which would actually be good for the user to end up on. You might be getting a lot of longtail traffic that's a deeper search, example your landing page is about "cats" but people are going to your article about "best food to feed a cat." Sometimes main topic pages can have very light content and aren't very attractive to users looking for information.

I actually just asked Google's John Mueller the very same thing and additionally a question about finding pages that do the same thing that may have been missed.
Check out the video clip

I am assuming you have done the basic checks like:
-
page is in your sitemap
-
Google has crawled the page
-
meta title and description optimised
If this has been done, does the sub pages have better content than the main page.
Like Bruce said, use Moz and see what keywords the page is ranking for or you could use something like searchmetrics to see what keywords are driving the traffic. Without knowing the url or keywords its a bit difficult to give you a bit more detail

Analyse why traffice is not going to the main page. A few things to look at:
Do a page rank check on Moz on each page using the keyword, and follow the guidelines and make adjustments.
See if the actual pages are getting the same keyword as a trigger, you might find it is actually another word that is ranking higher.
Hope that helps
Bruce

Positioning rethinking regarding triplicate keyword "landing pages"
Hi! We're rethinking our website and we have some doubts on how it would affect our positioning. Our main keyword right now is "casas de madera". Positioning by this keyword we have three different "main" pages: Our home (http://www.canexel.es/) 2)SEO landing page (http://www.canexel.es/casas-de-madera/) 3)A blog section (http://www.canexel.es/blog/casas-de-madera/) We thought at first about changing our home main keyword, but this option has been ruled out since is the keyword that gives us the most visits and changing it would result on a rebrandindg strategy we are not sure we want to pursue. We're thinking about a canonical from the landing page (2) to our Home (1) and making it disappear from our website. Regarding our blog we've thought about removing the blog section. We've thought about a 301 from every post to a new category or just deleting the category "casas de madera" from our site and telling google not to index the section (3) but continue indexing the posts we already have published under this category. Would any of these harm our positioning? And, if so, is ther any other steps you wolud recomend us taking? In this same topic, we're about to create a SEM Landing page for this same keyword. This page will be very visual and with little text. We are not sure if we should have a canonical pointing from it to our home or just not indexing the new SEM landing page. What would you recommend? Thanks

Is it better to have an hreflang go to the home page in a different language if there's no corresponding page
If I have some pages in English, but not in Spanish on my website: Should my hreflang go to the home page on the Spanish site? Or should I not have an "es-MX" hreflang for that page? Ideally I would have all the pages translated, but this has not all been done yet.

Duplicate Page Content
Hey Moz Community, Newbie here. On my second week of Moz and I love it but have a couple questions regarding crawl errors. I have two questions: 1. I have a few pages with duplicate content but it say 0 duplicate URL's. How do I know what is duplicated in this instance? 2. I'm not sure if anyone here is familiar with an IDX for a real estate website. But I have this setup on my site and it seems as though all the links it generates for different homes for sale show up as duplicate pages. For instance, http://www.handyrealtysa.com/idx/mls...tonio_tx_78258 is listed as having duplicate page content compared with 7 duplicate URLS: http://www.handyrealtysa.com/idx/mls...tonio_tx_78247

http://www.handyrealtysa.com/idx/mls...tonio_tx_78260 I've attached a screenshot that shows 2 of the pages that state duplicate page content but have 0 duplicate URLs. Also you can see somewhat about the idx duplicate pages. rel="canonical" is functioning on these pages, or so it seems when I view the source code from the page. Any help is greatly appreciated. skitch.png0 -
Description tag not showing in the SERPs because page is blocked by Robots, but the page isn't blocked. Any help?
While checking some SERP results for a few pages of a site this morning I noticed that some pages were returning this message instead of a description tag, A description for this result is not avaliable because of this site's robot.s.txt The odd thing is the page isn't blocked in the Robots.txt. The page is using Yoast SEO Plugin to populate meta data though. Anyone else had this happen and have a fix?

Meta Title for large Metro Area landing page
Hello! I am creating "metro landing pages" for an organization that has a 10-18 locations per metro city. The landing page houses brief information about the organization as a whole and then it has the locations listed with links to their respective pages. My question is how to optimize these titles. My sample city is Atlanta, GA. This metro page includes 18 locations from the Atlanta area. Marietta, Sandy Springs, Decatur, etc... My question is what is the best Meta Title to use for a Metro Page like this? Would it be best to say Day Care in Metro Atlanta | ABC Childcare Company | Child Care Atlanta Area or is their a better way to optimize a large Metro landing page? I really appreciate any suggestions! Thanks!!!

Can Page Authority of a site be higher than its Domain Authority?
I own a website called Takeyourtips.com. While doing a search no Google, I found that the page authority of the home page (31) is higher than the domain authority (23). I was wondering if it's really possible because my understanding was page authority of a page is determined by its domain authority. Therefore, it the domain authority of a website is 23, none of its page could have a higher page authority. Plus, upon consulting an SEO expert, I was told that neither Domain Authority or Page Authority of a page carries any importance as far as higher ranking of a website is concerned. Is this true? Thanks in advance for the answers. Cheers, Sushant large
