.co.uk ranking in serps and .com ranking on local
-
Hi im not sure what the best course of action is my client has one site but it has 2 TLD the .co.uk and the .com they wanted all .co.uk redirected to the .com but the .co.uk is ranking in the serps postion 2 and the .com is ranking in local, but is way back in the serps. So i have a bit of a dilemma, by the way it is a local business based in the uk.
what should i do?
-
A bit late but just for the record.
You have a rewrite rule in place not a redirect. You need something like:
RewriteRule ^(.*)$ http://www.yoursite.com/$1 [L,R=301]
-
i've added
`RewriteCond %{HTTP_HOST} !^www.yoursite.co.uk RewriteRule (.*) http://www.yoursite.co.uk/$1 [R=permanent,QSA,L]` to my .htaccess file in the root of my domain and it seems to be working
I've gone to google webmaster tools
1 Pick your new site from the list- done
but am stuck on step 2, i'm getting the following error:
2 Confirm that 301-redirects work properly
URLs from your old site should be redirected to your new site using permanent 301-redirect directives.
We couldn't find any 301-redirect directives for your site. For more details check the Fetch as Google tool. -
that sounds great thanks.
Sorry I forgot to mention the client has all their printed material letterheads, business cards etc and links pointing to the .com, but google has decided to serp the .co.uk if i change everyting to the .com should that then serp the .com to the top?
Or should i just stick to the .co.uk as I guess that doesnt matter to much as the 301 will just redirect.
Does google favour .co.uk listings in local uk results?

Hey
The answer here is pretty simple - you need to prioritise a single domain. The one you choose does not really matter in the long run so I would tend to favour the one people know best. I like .co.uk for uk businesses personally but...
1. Make sure both sites are registered in webmaster tools & put through a change of address for the one you want to change. Make sure the other is registered and you set any URL preferences (www. etc)
2. Add a 301 redirection to prioritise the main domain - you can use one rewrite rule to handle all www, non www, co.uk & .com variations - instructions here: http://www.bowlerhat.co.uk/one-301-rewrite-to-rule-them-all/
3. Add canonical URLs for the correct TLD to pick up any slack
4. Claim your local listing and update the URL to the correct one
5. Ideally update any external links if easy to do so for consistency
Ultimately, don't over think this one. If you have both domains indexed then you will only see improvements from getting this all consistent on the one TLD.
Hope that helps

Is a Mega Menu with over 300 links in it hurting my rankings?
I got hit pretty badly by Panda 4.0 (1/3 of my traffic lost), and I'm fairly certain it was because Google had potentially indexed over 20 million pages from a site filtering piece of software and got done for duplicate content. I have since fixed that using URL Parameters and that 20 million is down to 2.7 million now and I have submitted a clean site map, so now I wait. I have just done a site relaunch and am trying to determine if there are any other issues. I run an online store, and I have a mega menu with well over 300 links in it - makes the user experience really quick and easy to jump exactly where you want - and then I have about 30 links in the footer. I know there's a 'no more than 100 links on a page' guideline for Moz, but does anyone know if Google is smart enough to see the same header / footer navigation structure on every page of a site and know it's navigation and not water down the rest of the links, or do I need to re-think and simplify my navigation? It's one of those things that's there for a user experience and now I'm worried that I'm being penalised. The site is www dot shopnaturally dot com dot au

Does CTR Affect Ranking & Authority? Can PPC Influence That Too?
Hi everyone, Good CTR and bounce rate seem to affect rankings positively, but what about domain authority? Is that something built entirely on links and semantics, or does CTR play a factor too? Consider a homepage ranking for its brand name. Switching off any brand PPC will increase the natural listing's CTR. Would that have a positive SEO impact on the homepage/domain?

Site Not Ranking for Key Term
Question for my fellow Mozers I have a ranking question that I cannot put my finger on. I have a site (visitplano.com) where the client wants to rank for the keyword "Plano". I can't say if the site was previously ranking for this keyword, but I looked into the basic SEO practices and found that the keyword is incorporated in: Domain Title Content There is a lack of internal linking and anchor text within the content External links - 1,558 DA - 46 PA - 55 Currently, the website does not rank for the keyword "Plano". Could someone shed some light on why they aren't ranking or what I may be missing? I would greatly appreciate your help.

Swear Filter - SERP Impact
My forum currently has a swear filter in place. While I personally think in most cases there's better alternatives to swearing, the general consensus is that it should be removed, and I've no problem with that in principal, however my concern is that Google may penalise the site in some way if this is done. I've searched around a fair bit and haven't found any solid info on this so hoping someone on here may know the answer. The question - Can repeated swear words effect rankings or prevent a website displaying in Google if safesearch is on? Thanks as always.

Getting Google to provide a different URL in SERP
For one of my client’s sites, I have several keywords that are ranking in the top 5 positions. However, they have a high bounce rate. I believe this is because Google is delivering a different URL than the page we have optimized for the keyword. Any suggestions on ways I can get Google to present our preferred page?

Impact of mobile pages on current rankings
Morning all - I've been getting a bit of traffic recently for mobile phrases, so am thinking of putting a mobile optimised page on my site which users will be automatically directed to when they visit my site. My question is though, how will this affect the rankings of those current pages which are trying to target mobile users. For example, let's say I've got a page at www.betting.com/iphone which is ranking really well for those users looking to place a few bets on their iPhone. Once I stick my mobile optimised page up anyone clicking through to this URL will be re-directed to a generic mobile landing page at a different URL. Is this likely to effect my rankings of the original www.betting.com/iphone page at all given the fact that all visitors are being immediately re-directed elsewhere? Thanks very much for your help

Domain.com and www.domain.com
I recently changed the settings in Google Webmaster Tools so that domain.com and www.domain.com are the same. Several quick questions. About how long will it take for Google to list www.domain.com and stop listing domain.com? The .htaccess file uses a 301 to redirect all domain.com paths.to www.domain.com paths. Now that Google has been informed these two are the same, are the 301 rules to add www necessary? The default page is index.php. so domain.com gets 301 to www.domain.com gets 301 to www.domain.com/index.php. Is this the correct way to do things? Are there SEO consultants who will help on small projects such assist on issues like this? Best,
