.co.uk ranking in serps and .com ranking on local
-
Hi im not sure what the best course of action is my client has one site but it has 2 TLD the .co.uk and the .com they wanted all .co.uk redirected to the .com but the .co.uk is ranking in the serps postion 2 and the .com is ranking in local, but is way back in the serps. So i have a bit of a dilemma, by the way it is a local business based in the uk.
what should i do?
-
A bit late but just for the record.
You have a rewrite rule in place not a redirect. You need something like:
RewriteRule ^(.*)$ http://www.yoursite.com/$1 [L,R=301]
-
i've added
`RewriteCond %{HTTP_HOST} !^www.yoursite.co.uk RewriteRule (.*) http://www.yoursite.co.uk/$1 [R=permanent,QSA,L]` to my .htaccess file in the root of my domain and it seems to be working
I've gone to google webmaster tools
1 Pick your new site from the list- done
but am stuck on step 2, i'm getting the following error:
2 Confirm that 301-redirects work properly
URLs from your old site should be redirected to your new site using permanent 301-redirect directives.
We couldn't find any 301-redirect directives for your site. For more details check the Fetch as Google tool. -
that sounds great thanks.
Sorry I forgot to mention the client has all their printed material letterheads, business cards etc and links pointing to the .com, but google has decided to serp the .co.uk if i change everyting to the .com should that then serp the .com to the top?
Or should i just stick to the .co.uk as I guess that doesnt matter to much as the 301 will just redirect.
Does google favour .co.uk listings in local uk results?

Hey
The answer here is pretty simple - you need to prioritise a single domain. The one you choose does not really matter in the long run so I would tend to favour the one people know best. I like .co.uk for uk businesses personally but...
1. Make sure both sites are registered in webmaster tools & put through a change of address for the one you want to change. Make sure the other is registered and you set any URL preferences (www. etc)
2. Add a 301 redirection to prioritise the main domain - you can use one rewrite rule to handle all www, non www, co.uk & .com variations - instructions here: http://www.bowlerhat.co.uk/one-301-rewrite-to-rule-them-all/
3. Add canonical URLs for the correct TLD to pick up any slack
4. Claim your local listing and update the URL to the correct one
5. Ideally update any external links if easy to do so for consistency
Ultimately, don't over think this one. If you have both domains indexed then you will only see improvements from getting this all consistent on the one TLD.
Hope that helps

Problem with getting a site to rank at all
We pushed this Word Press site live about a month ago www.primedraftarchitecture.com. Since then we've been adding regular content, blog posts 3 times a week with social posts on facebook, twitter, G+ and LinkedIn. We also submitted via Moz Local about 3 weeks ago. Yext about two weeks ago and have been adding about 5 listings to small local directories a week. Webmaster tools shows that the site map is valid and the pages of the site are getting indexed and it shows links from 7 sites, mostly directories. I'm just not seeing the site ranking for anything. We're getting zero organic traffic. I though we did a good job not over optimizing the pages. I'm just stymied trying to figure out what's wrong. Usually we push a site live and see at least some low rankings after just a couple of weeks. Can anyone see anything that looks bad or where we've gone wrong?

Do quotation marks in content effect SERPs?
Some of my art object products have words and phrases engraved on them. The words relate to the images on the product. In the product descriptions, I have been putting quotes around the entire list. Would I get better long tail results if I didn't use the quotation marks? In other words, do the quotes make everything between them an exact match phrase? For example:

Is there something I have missed?! Thanks, Meaghan

Can you use multiple keywords for on page for ranking?
I understand using a keyword (or phrase) and correctly building that into the site structure (URL, Title Tag, body, etc). So, this question is going to be elementary, but I am starting to question myself as I write content. I have a client, for example, that has a new site and a page for Chocolate cakes. Now the other pages they built out are for Cheesecakes, Cupcakes, etc. So we optimized the Chocolate cakes page with our keyword throughout (Getting an A+ on page content grade). But now they are asking me why they can't be found for chocolate eclairs, chocolate fudge cake, devils chocolate cake, double chocolate cake, etc. My first quick answer is that they should build more pages. But am I doing this wrong?

Site is not ranking for a particular keyword !!
One of my site is ranking for all the main keywords except one. This keyword is just a variant of those keywords which are all ranking in top 10 (page 1) in Google. Why is it happening? Does Google punishes site for one keyword. I know competition of keyword matters but other keywords with similar competition are ranking. And even the site is very well optimized for this keyword (titles and site copy without any stuffing) Any Solutions ?

Inner page rank higher than domain
Hey there, Today my site received it's first Google pagerank and noticed something strange. My domain got a PR of 2 whilst most of the other inner pages got PR1, so far so good. But then one particular inner page which is just 2 weeks old and has zero backlinks has PR 3. I'm not one to fixate on PR but this just struck me as weird. What do you guys think?
