Changing domain name and site design while recovering from penguin? Still SEO power in EMDs?

Our website recently suffered from a penguin update courtesy of some black hat techniques used by an SEO company we hired a few years ago. We are working on cleaning up and disavowing the old spammy links, but at the same time this penalty has hit us while we were working on making some major changes to our website.
As a law firm we have 2 separate practice websites we are planning to merge under 1 domain to help boost our local results. Our problem is that the domain names for each practice are specific to the type of law they practice, so we will have to move both practices to a branded name domain that works for both practices.
I thought since traffic was already affected because of the penguin update this might be an opportune time to change the domain name, but since I am far from an expert at SEO I'm wondering if there are variables I am unaware of that might make this decision a very bad one.
Also we currently have exact match domains for our two different sites -- the way I understand it EMDs don't carry the same SEO weight they once did, but the firm is worried that losing the EMDs is going to cause a dramatic drop in traffic. If we keep the EMDs but permanently redirect them to the new site, will it maintain their SEO value? Would google consider that black hat and possibly penalize us for it in the future?

A part what the others wrote, I would not recommend to redirect the old penalized websites (if they were penalized) to the new domain, because the penalization will be transferred to it.
What I'd do was to update the good backlinks from the old EMDs to the new domain, asking the owners of the "good" sites to do it.

The good thing about EMDs is that sometimes (not always) they rank well for one specific query (the one that matches the domain) but unless they have all the other factors in place, they rank for nothing else. I had a client who was a lawyer who had multiple sites and the negatives way outweighed the positives.
If you're recovering from Penguin you might want to have a professional who specializes in this look at your site. I've seen cases where people disavowing links wrong had the opposite effect they were looking for (made them drop even further) because it wasn't done right. My recommendation would be Marie Haynes.
Most lawyer searches on Google show Google Places results first. How does your site rank in that section?

What I realized last years, EMDs still have a lot of power. But when my clients changed to a branded Domain, the loss was not that big, as I expected. Mostly 3 month after changing the rankings where back. But thats just what I saw in europe in 4 or 5 cases..

Pros/Cons on Where to Host Stores for Ecommerce Solution Provider (subdomain vs. throwaway domain, etc)
Hello! Does anyone have any experience with the pros/cons for where to host storefronts as an ecommerce solution provider. I'm looking for a recommendation on where to house the stores/websites people create with our software (think of us like a shopify/squarespace). What are the pros & cons of creating stores on the main domain name “brand.com” versus buying a new top level domain name who’s only purpose will be to hold all the subdomains, such as “mybrand.com”, or even “.my.brand.com”. store.brand.com <— subdomain our our primary domain

Change Brand Spelling after 8 years
After changing my complete site, citations, etc to a certain brand spelling--capitalize the first letter, I am being asked to add another capital in the spelling. Could this affect customer usability or ranking in any way? i.e. Mozcon to MozCon Thanks.

Facebook name change error
I keep getting "The Page name you entered does not meet our guidelines. Please review our Page name policies." My name change is well within policy. The page has about 400 fans. I am literally changing a minor aspect. Getting rid of a plural word. Any work around since facebook's site is not working for this?

Importance of Google+ name?
Greetings Mozzers, I'm working on some Google+ profiles currently and have one interesting case where I'd like some advice. The name of one of my clients' web addresses, company name, and Google+/Google Local verified local business names all reflect the same thing. [Name] Surgical Associates However, on Google+ it looks like it has a limited number of characters so it reads: [Name] Surgical Ass... How important is it to keep the name identical to everything else on the web? Could I get away with just changing the name on Google+ to [Name] Surgical I appreciate in advice on this matter and what would occur if I changed it here. Thanks.

Press Release Best Practices - should I add the PR to my site?
I wanted to know the best practice for SEO when it comes to press releases. If I publish a press release through a site like PRWeb or PRNewswire, can I also add the same press release to my site in the "news" section or will that create duplicate content issues? Would it make sense to include a summary of the press release on my site and then add a link to the press release hosted on the PR service's site? I don't necessarily want to take people away from my site, but I'm not sure if putting the whole release in both places makes sense. Thanks!

E-commerce Platforms and Seo Doubts
Hello There, I plan to launch my online store with products soon via one of the saas hosted based platforms like shopify & bigcommerce. The issue is am trying out to see how this works for us. But then simultaneously we would work towards seo efforts to bring in relevant traffic too. Later once we grow and I decide to change the entire website based on custom design etc so that means again all the seo work has to be re-done? How can I avoid this since I have already invested capital and time in building the current saas hosted website and its almost ready to roll out.
