Advice Needed Just Dropped From PR 8 to PR6 - What Do I Do
-
Hi SEOMoz,
I am the GM of http://www.scoop.co.nz
Today (or possibly yesterday) we dropped from PR 8 to PR6.
Have we been penalised by Panda 2?
If so what do we do? I have seen posts about seeking a reconsideration, or something but do not know who to contact or what to ask.
best regards

One of my blogs fell from a PR4 to a PR3 but traffic might be the best in 5 years. The toolbar page rank is a pretty poor indicator and I prefer to look at Mozrank and SEOMoz Page Authority.
Here is a good post on the topic of why toolbar PR is a poor metric: http://www.conversationmarketing.com/2011/06/pagerank-8-reasons-dont-care.htm

If you have been penalized you will know right away. Your traffic will TANK and so will your income.
... btw... I am seeing PR8 on your homepage here in USA.
Traffic is showing a slight drop off. On a week to week basis we are down 10% but today is the lowest thursday in two months (in google referrers).
My traffic is showing the same thing.... if your site is like mine and pulls global traffic... you probably see a traffic drop in June each year because of lower academic search in the Northern Hemisphere. (I know you are in NZ)
Rankings? Do you mean keywod rankings?
Yes

One thing to remember is that PageRank is just one of many ranking factors, and Google themselves say not to worry about it too much. The thing to look at is your traffic - if you're seeing a sudden drop-off then you may have been penalised. If it's gradual or seasonal then there are other things at play such as not gaining links as fast as everyone else, outdated architecture, etc.
Finally, google.com actually dropped from a 10 to a 9 in the recent update and I'm pretty sure they aren't having any traffic issues
As for being able to tell if you've had a penalty - the only real way is a sudden drop in rankings / traffic across your site. Sadly Google don't tell you anywhere so it's all guess work!
Hope that's helpful,
Matt

Question: Is thare any way to know if you have been penalised?
-
That's something I didn't know. We have seen a bit of a decline over the past month but this seems to happen to us every June.
We have been an 8 for several years since 2007 I think. We have incoming 34,000 domains with incoming followed links.
Another thing is that our sub- domains do not appear to have been effected badly.
We do have far too many links per page (including a fair few outbound ones) . Could this be responsible in anyway?

Thanks Dan. Its helpful to know not to panic

We were still 8 at the weekend. We have moved between 6 and 7 in the past... and moving back to 7 would be sad but not alarming. 8 to 6 is a big change. But the reassurance is good. None of

Also, the pagerank that you see on the toolbar is at least a month and a half old... the most recent pages that have pagerank are from early may. So, if this pagerank was a problem for you you would have seen the symptoms a while ago.
My guess is that you were barely an 8... then your site lost a few links, got bigger or didn't gain as fast as the rest of the web.... and now you are a very high 6.

HI
I would not worry about PR too much. Check your traffic, rankings and other key metrics over the next week or so. If they hold steady, I wouldn't worry about it. Just keep doing everything with the best practices possible.
A 10 second look at your site and nothing "panda-like" jumps out at me.

There was an update of the toolbar pagerank over the weekend. Lots of sites up, lots down. Just because your visible PR dropped does not say you are in trouble.
Here is the important question.... How are your traffic and rankings?

Keyword Restrictions - Advice on Best Practices
Hi. I looking to the community for support around how others have dealt with restrictions involving keyword usage. I have a client that is within the health supplements industry, and though not as highly regulated as medicine, they still have restrictions on words they CANNOT use on their store/website. Which of course is restrictive when you are trying to help them rank for Diabetes Supplements, but they can't mention the condition at all. So, what say the community, have you dealt with a similar issue? If so, how did/would you solve it? And can you share the solution/case study/website? In general, I was thinking they create a stand alone blog that talks about alternative medicine, health conditions, ingredients/recipes, etc. First identify what people around, e.g. Diabetic Supplements are searching for and then build content around those searches. Then once the community has had time to grow, start offering banner ads that direct them to the types of supplements they are selling on their direct website. *Just so you know, I'd also advise to put a disclaimer on the blog so people knew who owned it.

Advice on how to handle Guest Blogging between multiple brands
How to you manage your guest blogging efforts between companies. I blog for 4 different companies, and just started….I am confused if I should blog as myself, or should each company have an "author" set up, and then guest blog under each author? I want their website to get better rankings, and the brand to get more engagement. I am not concerned about myself and my authorship rating….but should I be? Would that be more beneficial to have all blogs tied to me, to help with engagement. Or am I shooting myself in the foot by not increasing my authorship. What's more important? Authorship or blogging about the relevant content from the author that makes the most sense? Just looking for tips from anyone that has to blog under different brands. How do you do it?!?! (also, looking into myguestblog plugin)

I want to remove some pages from my site with PR, what should I do with traffic?
I have a section of a site that I want to remove. It has a main page linked from the nav menu, and a half dozen subpages under that. The pages get some traffic and have ranks up to PR3, which is what my site's home page is. I'm no longer want to do these pages as they require tremendous upkeep and I'm not interested in keeping them going. So, I know if I just remove these pages and that's all, I'm going to pay for it somewhere with Google. What else should I do? I do't really have similar pages to direct them too.

Need help deciding how to display directory listings in way Google will like best
My blog site currently has maybe 100 posts and I do about 7-8 new a week. I am creating a directory for an this site, which will end up eventually being a few hundred or more entries eventually. In the directory browse/search listing, each directory listing will have a title and a short description (one or two lines) and will show about 10-20 per page. And then the user can click an entry to see more details for the particular directory listing. This is where I have a choice, and I want to know what is the best for my site, in Google's eyes of course. Options: 1. The listing detail is displayed on a separate page. 2. The listing detail is displayed below the entry that was clicked, on the same page, by use of jquery to slide down the other content blow it to make room for it. (It actually looks slick, I've tried it). If I were writing full, unique pages for each listing detail, I'd choose option #1. But the vendors are submitting the content. It's possible they might just copy and paste their site's About page into it, or they might not even add any more detail other than their address. I can't control it. So, if going with option #1, let's say a third of the vendors add nice unique content, a third paste in some dup content, and a third just leave it blank (there would still be an address, couple line short description, and a title on the page). Would this situation be good, not good or neutral for my site? I'm not sure if adding additional pages, maybe half to two-thirds of which could be somewhat duped or of minimal word length would be bad or neutral for my site overall. As for my existing and ongoing blog pages--they are all unique, long and Google seems to love them.

Advice on Title please
<y website="" <a="" href="http://www.nile-cruises-4u.co.uk">www.nile-cruises-4u.co.uk was number 1 in Google.co.uk for several years for our main search term "nile cruise" until about 4 months ago when we fell to our current position of 4 or 5.</y> I am looking at every aspect of optimising the site and wonder if I am using a good enough title for the home page? At the moment it is titled: Nile Cruise | Nile Cruises | Nile Cruise Bargains I wonder if I should just call it "Nile Cruise"? I alreay have a seperat page entitled "Nile Cruise Bargains" and wonder if having that phrase in the homepage title would have any adverse affects? Earlier this year our site was hacked and we spent 2 weeks with it being unavailable until we had rebuilt and repaired it. After that our position dipped. We have a Blog going back to 2007 and when we repaired the site the Blog was affected in that although we managed to re-install the hundreds of posts they were without all of the SEO tags and categories, etc, etc. I've been slowly adding those but there are still hundreds to do. Could this be affecting our page position? Thanks, Colin
