Paid directory links
-
Just going through my competitors back links, and discovered a couple of directories who charge a small fee for a listing (£20) (one way link) or a free listing (with a reciprocal link) they both have PR of 50 so I was wondering are these type of links still worth it?
Best wishes.
David.

Hi Alex,
Most of the time it's up to each SEOer on what they think and down to some judgment. I stay away from cheesy directories. I do sometimes submit to niche directories that I think people may be using to look for very niche sites etc. You can also consider the big boys like yahoo etc. but I never think you get a return on the cost to submit (I've also a feeling the yahoo directory is closing soon!)
Sorry I can't say this is good this is bad its just a call you've got to way up. is it worth the risk for the return?

Hi Chris,
Thanks for the response, I agree with your point about overdoing something and I'm talking about cheesy , low quality directories, but what about decent directories but not from Dmoz rank, where is the red line and what criterias would you use to evaluate directory?
Thanks
Alex

Hi Alex,
Take the Moz rank (in fact any rank) factor away, would you still list there? if you answer no you can probably cope without it, if you answer yes go for it.
E.g. if i could even get a no-follow link on bbc.co.uk I'd jump head over heals which for me is much better than a follow link on a lower quality site. Not the best example but hope it somewhat gets the point across.
The other thing is I don't want to scare you off directories look at it as a percentage of your site if only a couple percent of your site (as a whole from links) is made up of directories i wouldn't worry but if 50% of your total site links are from directories you are in trouble. Not all directories are bad e.g. Dmoz, yahoo etc. can be good but its a matter of using some judgment.
Hope that helps you a bit better.

How do you tell if specific directory listing will do the harm to my site or not. How G knows if a listing created to bring traffic or for SEO purposes only.I have the same dilemma. I found good directory with very high MozRank and I assume it get's good amount of traffic. How should I know if by adding my site to that directory will get me penalized of will get me extra traffic?
Thanks in advance

Hi David,
It violates the Google guidelines - https://support.google.com/webmasters/answer/66356?hl=en whilst it may be fine or one or two links that you really feel benefit people seeing on each site e..g. a printing site that compliments your photography etc. for the most part it will lead you to a penalty.
Hope that helps.

Hi Chris,
Thanks for the response. I should have said it is a DA by MOZ from open site explorer. What about reciprocal links from other photographers? I am a member of an american site Photographers seo and there are other photographers who are happy to swap links. Are they worth the time?

Couple of things, firstly NO! don't do it, seconds PR is not updates so ignore that metric (it also only goes to 10). Unless the directory is going to be used by real people looking for your site don't bother it will just end up getting you some form of penalty.

Value of Links? What is each link worth?
Morning Everyone, I just had this thought and wondered what everyone's opinions were in terms of link value in monetary terms. We'll assume for the purposes of this that the links come from contextually relevant sites and that the sites in question have got the Moz DA from being high quality and have a good quality incoming link profile. Its a bit of a theoretical question, but i guess imagine if the only way you could get links was to pay for them, what would they be worth to you. This is link value for SEO purposes, they will have in addition value from traffic from good sites, that no doubt varies wildly depending on topic. I assume everyone also agrees on: The first link from a domain is the most valuable High DA sites are worth more than low ones. So could anyone who has an opinion on the link value suggest a monetary value for links. Its really just using a monetary amount to see how best to target my time. Here is my example of what might be expected, but I am hoping people with more knowledge will perhaps correct it. DA Rating First Link 2nd-5th Link 5th-10th Link 10Plus Links 5 $5 $2 $1 $0 15 $7 $3 $2 $1 25 $25 $10 $5 $2 35 $45 $20 $7 $3 45 $65 $30 $11 $4 55 $95 $45 $19 $5 65 $200 $100 $45 $6 75 $350 $120 $65 $9 85 $700 $240 $95 $15 95 $1100 $450 $200 $30

Link Pharming
My company has been using an SEO company for a while and have built up our pagerank to a 6. However, we have noticed that they're involved in link pharming - they're buildng extra websites and linking to our site on them. We are not happy with this as we know it will only be a matter of time before Penguin hits us. The contract with the SEO company is coming up for renewal soon and we're thinking of cancelling it. However, we are not sure if the company will delete all our backlinks, which will probably decrease our PageRank too. Has anyone here ever had a similar experience? What did the SEO company do when you cancelled the contract? Does anyone here work for an SEO company and what do you do when someone cancels your service?

Do No follow links from social media platforms transfer authority or value when they link to third party websites?
With social media playing a bigger role in SEO (since the Panda, Penguin updates etc) and how search engines rank sites now, does anybody know why Twitter for instance has 'no follow' when I check my client's websites under 'inbound links' on Open Site Explorer?

Too Many Links???
SEOMOZ is telling me I have more than 100 links on quite a few of my pages, and I cant seem to find out what links they are finding. Like for instance on this page http://standupguys.biz/what-we-haul/commercial-junk-removal-services/computer-removal-recycling/ It is telling me that I have 117 hyper links (which is WAY too high). Can anyone explain to me where these are coming from, and how I can avoid this?? Please and thank you.

Link to those that link to you? Worthwhile?
We have thousands and thousands of sites that link to a domain we are working on, many with low page authority and high domain (bloggers, forum posts, etc). Has anyone experimented with linking to the pages that link to you (not from your site) but from other means in an effort to boost their quality? I'm not sure what method we would use, maybe some relevant blog comments or social votes. But curious if this could be an effective method.

Links on the same keyword
When is linking from one particular keyword to much. At what point could link building from one keyword be considered spam and potentially delist a site ? Is it possible for a site to be delisted for having to many links from the same keyword ? Heard linking from the website name is more important following recent changes. I try and link from a selection of 3 to 4 keywords. Thanks for your help

Directory Submissions
Hello All. Our site has 17,000 links from over 300 route domains but none from directories. Using open site explorer i've found tons of paid and free directories but Its so time consuming manually submitting. Is it better to take the time to check each directory manually or should I look at some kind of automated service? Cheers Todd
