SEO impact of AJAX category on Magento website?
-
I am designing a new category for my website. Instead of a grid or list view there is an additional (default) view that implements Owl Carousel.
What this means for SEO is that there is going to be a lot of dynamically loaded content and I am not quite sure how to handle that. By default all the user (and Google) will see is product images. Once the product image is clicked more details are shown about the product.
Are there any articles that any of you can refer me to on Googles recommendation for handling dynamic content?
My initial thought was that with a decent site map and the other available views this wouldn't be a big deal, especially since my categories tend to bog down SEO with links and repetitive terms in the product name (i.e. Flavored This, Flavored That, Flavored Other Term) as well as I'm unsure if I need the "juice" passed through my category product links.. but I'll leave it to the community to confirm that.

Well, that depends on the structure of your website and how you want to use category pages. For example, I manage an ecommerce website that sells Widgets. I have a high ranking XYZ Widgets product page. It sells amazing and since my price is so awesome, people link to it from their blogs and such. However, XYZ widgets just became discontinued. When the product page disappears, it creates a 301 to my main Widgets Category.
My Widgets Category page isn't going anywhere (not being removed from the site anytime soon) and ranks high in the SERPs. All those 301'ed product pages help improve its authority and allows me to rank high for a broad industry term - it also acts an efficient landing page.
That's just one store setup though, it could be that your category pages do not add value and you use a different page for that type of use. If you're not using your category pages to rank in the SERPs, then I would find which broad pages you do want to rank and have the product pages 301'd to those pages (to save any authority gained).
In terms of Internal linking, since I want my category pages to rank, a clear internal link structure helps that case. It also ends up that my category pages have a higher internal link count because of the structure I have in place. That all contributes to the category pages ranking higher for broader terms and allows my product pages to rank higher for the specific terms.

Hi Ray,
Your response is very helpful and insightful. Will you take a look at my other comment and offer additional insight? I'm hoping that product category page SEO is negligible enough that I can squeeze by without it impacting my design.

In your experience, do categories carry much ranking power in terms of internal links? This is the only page that concerns me in terms of SEO. My products will scrollable horizontally causing much of the listed information and image to be hidden. To me, it seems that all that Google can take away from a category page in terms of SEO is that it is where a particular product falls under - but can't my breadcrumbs do the same (my canonical URLs do not include category).

Hi Tyler - Dynamic content is in a state of flux right now. First off, you'll want to use the Fetch as Google Bot tool to see which content is being loaded and viewed by the Google Bot.
https://support.google.com/webmasters/answer/6066467?hl=en
If you're seeing all the content that you consider necessary, then you may stop right there. However, if you see that important content is missing from the fetch, you may need to consider adjusting the UI of your website.
Recently, Google has informed the community that content that is not originally visible to the user can be 'discounted' and not carry as much weight for ranking. If you're seeing that much of your valuable ranking content is not immediately visible to the user, then you may again need to reconsider your UI design. This change has caused many SEOs to reconsider their web page design - especially around Ecommerce products (I fall into this category).

In the situation where the dynamic content is content that belongs to a more important page, i.e. your home page loads dynamic product content that is also available on a unique product page, then this may not be much of an issue for you at all. Just make sure that you have the important, quality ranking content immediately and highly visible as needed on your home page and Google will use that content to rank your site as desired.

Does anyone know the linking of hashtags on Wix sites does it negatively or postively impact SEO. It is coming up as an error in site crawls 'Pages with 404 errors' Anyone got any experience please?
Does anyone know the linking of hashtags on Wix sites does it negatively or positively impact SEO. It is coming up as an error in site crawls 'Pages with 404 errors' Anyone got any experience please? For example at the bottom of this blog post https://www.poppyandperle.com/post/face-painting-a-global-language the hashtags are linked, but they don't go to a page, they go to search results of all other blogs using that hashtag. Seems a bit of a strange approach to me.

Acquired domains for SEO
hi there, For one of our insurance websites we acquired a domain, this domain is going to be redirected to our domain. After some research we discovered the domain we've bought also includes other domains which 301 redirect to specific 'insurance products'. These domains are also included in the deal. But what is the best technical solution for redirecting these specific redirected product domains? They already redirect to the product pages of the domain we've bought, so after redirect this domain, the sub (product) redirected domains will also link to us. It would be like this: A) www.sub-carinsurancesite.nl (301) -> www.domain-we-bought.com/car-insurance -> www.ourdomain.com/car-insurance

B) www.sub-carinsurancesite.nl (301) -> www.ourdomain.com/car-insurance & www.domain-we-bought.com/car-insurance -> www.ourdomain.com/car-insurance etc0 -

Schema for Banks and SEO
I'm researching Schema opportunities for a bank, but besides the shema markup available today (like bankorcreditunion) and developments with FIBO, I can find no answer as to the effect of tagging interest rates and such in terms of SERP/CTR performance or visibility. Does anyone have a case study to share or some insight on the matter?

Robots.txt and Magento
HI, I am working on getting my robots.txt up and running and I'm having lots of problems with the robots.txt my developers generated. www.plasticplace.com/robots.txt I ran the robots.txt through a syntax checking tool (http://www.sxw.org.uk/computing/robots/check.html) This is what the tool came back with: http://www.dcs.ed.ac.uk/cgi/sxw/parserobots.pl?site=plasticplace.com There seems to be many errors on the file. Additionally, I looked at our robots.txt in the WMT and they said the crawl was postponed because the robots.txt is inaccessible. What does that mean? A few questions: 1. Is there a need for all the lines of code that have the “#” before it? I don’t think it’s necessary but correct me if I'm wrong. 2. Furthermore, why are we blocking so many things on our website? The robots can’t get past anything that requires a password to access anyhow but again correct me if I'm wrong. 3. Is there a reason Why can't it just look like this: User-agent: * Disallow: /onepagecheckout/ Disallow: /checkout/cart/ I do understand that Magento has certain folders that you don't want crawled, but is this necessary and why are there so many errors?

Redirects for new website
Hi Moz community,
Technical SEO | | JSimmons17
I'm a fairly new SEO Specialist with a brand new website. We initially had a very basic holding website until the fully functional website was completed. I have to do some redirects as we have both .html and .php files & we don't want to lose SEO value for specific pages (like the index, news, etc). I also want to redirect from a www url to a non-www url. I am trying to accomplish redirects with the following code: RewriteEngine on
RewriteCond %{HTTP_HOST} ^www.mywebsite.com [NC]
RewriteRule (.*) http://mywebsite.com/$1 [R=301,L] RedirectMatch 301 /index.html (.*).(php|html) http://mywebsite.com/index.php RedirectMatch 301 /cupcakes-slideshow/glutenfree-slideshow.html (.*).(php|html) http://mywebsite.com/gluten-and-glutenfree.php RedirectMatch 301 /press.html (.*).(php|html) http://mywebsite.com/news-and-reviews.php Please let me know if I am on the right track. Thanks so much in advance!0 -

Two companies merge: website A redirect 301 to website B. Problems?
Hi, last december the company I work for and another company merged. The website of company A was taken offline and the home page was 302 redirected to a page on website B. This page had information about the merger and the consequences for customers. The deeper pages of website A were 301 redirected to similar pages on website B. After a while, the traffic from the redirected home page decreased and we thought it was time to change the redirect from a 302 into a 301 redirect to the home page. Because there are still a lot of links to the home page of website A and we wanted to preserve the link juice. Two weeks ago we changed the 302 redirect from website A into a 301 redirect to the home page of website B. Last week the Google webmaster tools account of website B showed the links from the 301 redirected website A. The total amount of links doubled and the top anchor text is the name of company A instead of company B. This, off course, could trigger an alarm at Google. Because we got a lot of new links with a different anchor text. A tactic used by spammers/black-hats. I am a bit worried that our change will be penalized by Google. But our change is legit. It is to the advantage of our customers to find us if they search for the name of company A or click on a link to website A. We didn´t change the change of address of domain A in Google webmaster tools yet. Is it a good idea to change the change of address of domain A into domain B? Are there other precautions we can take?
