Website (.BE) showing up in .NL SERPS
-
Fellow mozzers, we need your help
We have a situation where a customer has two websites for each country:
- flowtracksurf.be → Belgium
- flowtracksurf.nl → Netherlands
They used to have very good keyword rankings in the SERPS in BE & NL.
Flowtracksurf.nl had good rankings in Google.nl and Flowtracksurf.be in Google.be.
Recently there has been a change: Flowtracksurf.nl is not showing up in Google.nl anymore. It also seems that all the rankings from flowtracksurf.nl have been switched to flowtracksurf.be..BE is doing very well, .NL is suffering.
Data shows us that .NL :
- In the first two weeks of december 2014, we see a massive drop in traffic (GA)
- In that same week(s) we see a drop in search queries (Webmaster Tools)
- We see the exact opposite in .BE (growing strong in those weeks)
- When we look at the cache of flowtracksurf.nl we see only reference to flowtracksurf.be. Is that a hint of what was going on?
- On the same date that we see a massive drop in traffic on .NL, we see a peak in 'indexation' of .BE
- We see that the MOZ pages crawled dropped in that same week for NL
- We're also seeing that all the traffic from Google.nl is now going to flowtracksurf.be.
Some keywords we were scoring #1-2 for are: surfvakanties, surfvakantie, surfcamp mimizan, surfcamp, frankrijk, surfcamp spanje, surfen frankrijk
We just can't figure out the hard evidence in the data.
Can you help us on that? -
Hi Jacob - Has this issue been resolved? We would love an update, thanks!

Hi Jacob,
Just arrived home. So I would disclose why I said a few hours ago, that I was afraid of the December 8th date.
I have seen a huge drop in few of our websites which had quite a spammy backlink profile on that date. We have been cleaning up since then, trying to repair the damage, and results are showing up.
Try to check if your organic traffic has dropped site-wide or just for specific search queries. (in my case specific search queries had less traffic, but some other keyword sets were producing well).
On the 6th-7th there was the "Penguin Double Take" update, which I think has hit your site performance.
I hope this helped.

Oh, that 8th of December... now that is something I didn't want to see.
We also have seen a drop on this period on both dutch and belgian market.
If you want, I can take a look in the evening, I will PM you.

Hi Keszi
Thank you for your reply and insights. Great reference to the article. We'll go in-depth.
However, the changes are so sudden(*1) and big(*2) that we believe it must be something bigger than this.
(*1) the big drop (for NL) happened on 8-21 December.
(*2) we're talking about -95% organic traffic overnight -
Hi Jacob,
As I was reading through your question, the first thing that jumped in: HREFLANG markup.
Then I jumped over your URL and I see the following:
<link rel="<a class="attribute-value">alternate</a>" href="http://www.flowtracksurf.be" hreflang="<a class="attribute-value">nl-be</a>" /> (on Belgium version)
<link rel="<a class="attribute-value">alternate</a>" href="http://www.flowtracksurf.nl" hreflang="<a class="attribute-value">nl-nl</a>" /> (on Netherlands version)
You are not using cross annotation. That might cause an issue for you.
There is a nice article about Hreflang implementations from Dave Sottimano: http://moz.com/blog/hreflang-behaviour-insights
Read it trough, I think with correct implementation of Hreflang, you should be able to resolve this issue.
I hope it was helpful.
Gr., Keszi

Why is Amazon crawling my website? Is this hurting us?
Hi mozzers, I discovered that Amazon is crawling our site and exploring thousands of profile pages. In a single day it crawled 75k profile pages. Is this related to AWS? Is this something we should worry about or not? If so what could be a solution to counter this? Could this affect our Google Analytics organic traffic?

Old Website Build Effecting SEO
So this is a bit of a strange one. My latest website was built on a different domain, then transferred over (as opposed to being built on a subdomain). I was told that the domain which my site was built on wasn't indexed by Google, but looking at the Google Search Console I can see that the old domain name is showing up as the most linked to domain name of my current site - meaning it was indexed. The domain (and all of its pages) does have a 301 redirect to the new website home page (as opposed to their individual pages), but could this be causing me a problem with SEO? Additionally, my website has a sister (UK and US websites), both link to each other on the footer (which appears on every page). Could this be pulling my SEO efforts down if it is a do-follow link?

Website Suddenly dropping rank
Morning Moz Fans: My URL is: http://goo.gl/Dhbjwj According to MOZ, which we are tracking this URL with, somewhere between the 3rd Feb and 10th the domain went from being fairly well indexed to being dropped to pages further back than 6-7, for pretty much everything, even the company name was only registering at the bottom of page one. Around this time we were transferring the website from .php into wordpress, so we were creating new pages, called by the same names and all the same content but we created the wordpress area in a sub domain of the website. Again around this time we had an issue with the blog area and had to take it down for 4-5 weeks due to some errors which meant google wouldn't have been able to crawl these pages properly, but the rest of the website was up and running. We also discovered recently that the company have and use this domain http://goo.gl/5JvDUH So my question is, what do you think caused the problem? has it been premaritally penalised? is there a way I can get google to specifically look at it and is there any more i can do?Thank you for your help

Whats up with this website?
cybercig.co.uk Languishing around 150-200 in the rankings, very barely making it above 70. But also ranks for Refillable Electronic Cigarette on the first page. Any ideas whats happening? Not a huge amount of links but I'd have thought it would've been much higher. I'd love to know opinions 🙂

Other domains hosted on same server showing up in SERP for 1st site's keywords
For the website in question, the first domain alphabetically on the shared hosting space, strange search results are appearing on the SERP for keywords associated with the site. Here is an example: A search for "unique company name" shows the results: www.uniquecompanyname.com as the top result. But on pages 2 and 3, we are getting results for the same content but for domains hosted on the same server. Here are some examples with the domain name replaced: UNIQUE DOMAIN NAME PAGE TITLE

META DESCRIPTION TEXT2 UNIQUE DOMAIN NAME PAGE TITLE 3
mail.DOMAIN5.com/?action=category&id=17
META DESCRIPTION TEXT3 ns5.DOMAIN6.com/?action=article&id=27 There are more but those are just some examples. These other domain names being listed are other customer domains on the same VPS shared server. When clicking the result the browser URL still shows the other customer domain name B but the content is usually the 404 page. The page title and meta description on that page is not displayed the same as on the SERP.As far as we can tell, this is the only domain this is occurring for.So far, no crawl errors detected in Webmaster Tools and moz crawl not completed yet.0 -
How to seo websites on another server
We have partners that want us to build and manage a co-branded white label for them. We will have unique content on the white label, however the white label will be located on our server. I was planning to put it on a subdomain and mask the URL, however was told that google will see through that and not give any credit to the white label. Our partners all have high PR and we are a new company with low PR. We want the white labels to get the credit from the partner websites. Should we do it through url masking or by changing the A Record in the other website to point to our server?

DNS or 301 Website Redirect
We are running a marketplace site, so we have thousands of vendors selling their products on our site. Each vendor has a Profile page and we are soon to launch a premium store-front that is white label. Many of these vendors will want to point a custom url to their premium store-front (which is a sub domain of the marketplace) and we are trying to get an understanding of how we should instruct them to point their url in a way that will give the main marketplace site the seo juice. We also want to understand what will show up in the address bar. Will it be their url or our sub domain? Will any of the marketplace seo juice boost their url local listing status?

Optimising a Dynamic website ?
A client has bought the Nostalgia wp theme. I've installed Yoast but because the website is ajax based and the content for the pages are dynamically loaded the plugin won't work. Or at least not to my knowledge? The developer doesn't currently have a solution, which from previous expereience it will never be supported. So I need some possible solutions here. Create a mobile site? Cons more time, more money etc Create non dynamic pages linked in footer area. Cons page duplication etc. It's a small niche so having the basic elements is imperative to getting it ranking.
