Optimizing for 3 international sites, how to avoid getting into trouble
-
Hi Guys
As a newbie, I want to avoid any penalties or mistakes as possible that will be due to unknown and have taken some steps to educate myself around international sites and multiple domains.
our aim was to target new zealand first and then branch out. Whilst we are pondering the NZ site and writing fresh unique articles for the site and the blog. And besides making the currency, language more relevant to these domains, is there anything else I could work on? I thought about making the meta tags different for the home page and adding Australia etc If we are going to spend time growing the site organically I thought I would make the most of spending the time growing all three together....
Any recommendations on how to get started and optimize the 3 alot better?
Thanks

thanks Ray, the site is lifereader. co.nz and the another good one would be california psychics. the industry is quiet competitive so not sure they would join the discussion to tell us there tricks, although that would be great lol

I don't see why not - I haven't seen any rules against it and I don't think it would be 'frowned upon.' We're all about analyzing strategies, techniques, and technical issues so if providing a website helps the community do that then I would post it.
If anything, your competitor should be on top of their brand mentions and see that their domain was mentioned, which may invite them into the conversation.
If I'm wrong about that, the Moz staff will set me straight.

Can I share a competitors website on here?
-
You can PM me directly if something is sensitive. However, if the community can also respond I prefer to have all questions available to the public.
-
Thanks Ray is concerning that you bring this up, as I said we don't want to be penalised. Can I share more information with you on here somehow?
With regard to the comment made by the seo company, that was initially why we never took action upon this alot earlier, and having seen our competitors do it, we never really paid to much attention to it, but I'm being very mindful of the situation...
It would be good to get more feedback yes. Thanks alot for your responses.
-
Well, that' an understandable position to be in. Unfortunately, I cannot speak directly to the following:
"I was also told by our current SEO company that google only penalises sites that have duplicate content in the same localised areas...."
I'm guessing your developer means country specific areas and not necessary city/region, which would be susceptible to penalties in this situation.
I would really like to hear from someone else in the Moz community with more direct experience on this international issue - hopefully someone speaks up soon

Hi Ray-pp
Thank you very much for your response. We had alot of trouble getting merchant facilities for the .com being based in NZ for this type of acitivity with high charge backs we needed the co.nz domain, also we noticed our competitors were doing the same, on top of com, com.au and co.nz they also have co.uk and so when we first initiated the domain we decided to go for It and on top of that it could also be an issue trying to get this appointed to our team, as it is quiet the task atm!
So we are trying to get around this situation. I could name my competitors but It may not look so good to point it out on here, and I don't really know how they are able to get around it as they have not changed any content, they have only changed the content around in the meta tag home page.
I was also told by our current SEO company that google only penalises sites that have duplicate content in the same localised areas.... ? Can you clarify this?

As your sites are currently configured, you do run the risk of a duplicate content penalty. Your site's appear to be the same, except for the URLs (same content across each domain name).
I'd start by asking why you need to have country specific domains. A .com ranks very well internationally. I understand the importance of having the unique domain names from a trademark perspective, but if the content will not be unique I suggest having them all 301 redirect to the .com domain. If possible, have the site translate to the country language when choosing from the international drop down, rather than visiting the country specific domain.
This cuts down on a lot of the maintenance needed for multiple domains and prevent duplicate content penalties.
If you want to keep the domains separate and have the content be mostly duplicate, you would need to look into cross-domain canonicalization. From what I saw, you do not have any canonical tags on the site at this point. Plus, we need to remember that canonical tags are only a suggestion for the search engines to follow and they may choose not to adhere to the tags you put in place.

Baidu Webmaster Tools: How to setup in "Site Properties" the field "Affiliate subject"?
Hi ,
International SEO | | lcourse
finally I managed to setup my site in Baidu Webmaster Tools with the help of a freelance staff member in China. Site is verified and sitemap submitted. In section "Site Properties", field "Affiliate subject" I can't figure out after extensive search what I need to setup here for a foreign company without any presence and without company registration in China. Anybody can help? When I click on this field, it indicates "Site association subject is a necessary link for mobile resources to enter search." so my site will not show up in mobile results without it? Grateful for any tips on how to resolve this piece of puzzle of the baidu setup.

International corporate SEO - menu and preferences
Hi all, for internationalization we have used subfolders structure (e.g. domain.com/us/) and since we have approx 150 countries to cover, then country selector is quite a link-base, especially if pages itself can have even several hundreds of internal links as well. Currently, all links to other countries are set as rel="nofollow" and I'm planning to change them to "follow" to distribute a juice. Do you please have an experience with such internal links voluminous websites and this follow/nofollow settings? Also we are having and issue with other countries outperforming local search. So for example in US, searching for kind of "Brand America" keyword, our UK branch outperforms US. Hreflangs are set in the sitemaps and each branch (country) is set in search console correctly as well. Since there are some issues with sitemaps (e.g. not actual links, or links returning 404), I assume that google is not using these sitemaps therefore hreflang information is lost as well. Am I correct ? thank you in advance, Tom

What is the proper way to setup hreflang tags on my English and Spanish site?
I have a full English website at http://www.example.com and I have a Spanish version of the website at http://spanish.example.com but only about half of the English pages were translated and exist on the Spanish site. Should I just add a sitemap to both sites with hreflang tags that point to the correct version of the page? Is this a proper way to set this up? I was going to repeat this same process for all of the applicable URLs that exist on both versions of the website (English and Spanish). Is it okay to have hreflang="es" or do I need to have a country code attached as well? There are many Spanish speaking countries and I don't know if I need to list them all out. For example hreflang="es-bo" (Bolivia), hreflang="es-cl" (Chile), hreflang="es-co" (Columbia), etc... Sitemap example for English website URL:

Huge increase in US direct visits to a UK site, why?
Hi all, My UK website usually gets around 10,000 direct (Direct in Analytics) visits per month however for August this has shot up to 24,000! However the majority of these direct visits seem to be coming from the US and as a result the bounce rate is through the roof, 84%! Why would my UK based site suddenly be receiving huge amounts of US visits? Any ideas?

Why has there been Massive increase in traffic to my clients .eu site after redirects were initiated?
Hi guys, This is a strange one thats really bugging me. I have a client that redirected their domain to a brand new domain that was already live for the previous two months. I have been trying analyse the data however I can't quite understand why there is a massive increase in visitors from the United States when the old site was redirected. The redirection took place at the beginning of July. It was badly managed in terms of the mapping of 301 redirects however thats not the issue here. The level of traffic is gradually decreasing I imagine due to the high level of bounces. The site in question is an EU funded website for education. The old site in the first 2 weeks of June received around 500 visits from the USA while the new site in the first 2 weeks of July (2 weeks into the redirects) received around 3,000 visits from the USA. The new site had previously received only 300 visits for the same period as the old site in the 1st 2 weeks of June. Any idea why this might be? Thanks Rob

3 month old site lost almost complete traffic overnight
Hi All, I started a Indian coupon and deal site http://www.couponspy.in/ around 3 month ago and traffic increased almost daily. But yesterday my site lost almost all of its traffic. Keywords which ranked 1-5 lost around 4-15 places and keywords which ranked 6-20 lost ca. 20-50 places. The Moz Crawl Diagnostics doesn't indicate any mayor issues. Has there been a Google Panda update in India? Reasons why my site has been affected? Please help!!!! 😉 I have seen the same traffic decrease on other coupon start ups, eg https://www.cuponation.in/ and https://www.cuponation.in/ Did we all make the same mistake? Any guesses?

Question about international redirectss
if I have a site like google.com for United States and another International site, www.google.ca for a site in Canada. Should I create a 302 redirect if someone in Canada visits the google.com site and it automatically redirects them to the google.ca. Is a 302 the appropriate technical thing to do, or is there a better way?

Changing server location for a global targetted site
Hi, I am just in the process of purchasing a site from someone. The site has a global target audience (well global English speaking anyway). The site is on a .info domain and is currently hosted in Germany. Checking on SemRush it looks like 70% of traffic comes from English speaking countries (US, Australia, Canada, UK). Now I need to move the hosting to one of my own when I change ownership of the site. Now does it overly matter where I choose my hosting as currently it is hosted in Germany (around 4% of visitors from Germany) but I want to do my best not to knock any rankings but I was thinking of moving it to a UK or US based host but still want to keep a general worldwide userbase. As the US accounts for the largest part of traffic (39%) would I be best choosing hosting based over in the US or does it not overly matter too much (I am in the UK so most hosting I use is UK based). I have read a number of posts on server location but most seem to be for site which have a country specific target audience. Thanks for your help! 🙂
