Local Ranking Power of a Multi-Keyword URL?

Here is a site that is sitting at number 1 on Google UK (local results) for a number of its keywords:
http://www.scottishdentistry.com/
If you look at the links in the navigation many of them have urls such as this:
http://www.scottishdentistry.com/glasgow-scotland-dentistry/glasgow-scotland-hygienists.html
These have clearly been created to be keyword rich. For example, there is no publicly-available page at:
http://www.scottishdentistry.com/glasgow-scotland-dentistry
Do you think this tactic has helped with the site's rankings? Is it worth imitating? Or will it ultimately attract a penalty of some kind?
Remember this is in the UK where Google seems to be slower at penalising dodgy tactics than in the US.

Thanks very much for your response. Much appreciated.
The reason I asked about this particular issue is that a client's site is slightly below this one on key searches even though it beats it on nearly every criteria in OSE (authority, links etc).
Therefore I am looking at any other factors - such as this url issue - which could be making the difference.

Hey Neil,
Yes, having the practice's city name in the URLs is a perfectly fine tactic, as long as it's reasonable, but the main thing here to remember is that this is just one tiny thing that should be happening on any local business website. You want your basic SEO right, of course, but as the link Ryan has shared will demonstrate, there are just tons of things that require effort. No one's rankings are going to boil down to any one of the factors. The goal is to make a superior effort in your city and industry across many, many factors.

Understood. Go to the link on Local search ranking factors to help you prioritize as that will give you the best idea of what your client is doing well, missing, or doing poorly. I'd work on all the things that are more important than localization in the URL first as improving those should gain ground the quickest.

My problem is this site is my client's competition.
I agree with all of your points but I wonder if I should copy this tactic to gain ground on them in local search.

Hi Neil. For local searches, localization still carries some weight when found within the URL, see: http://moz.com/local-search-ranking-factors, but I'd try to use a little less repetition than in the example above and focus on the higher valued difference making factors.
Outside of local, per Moz's own 2013 Search Ranking Factors, keywords in the URL are 1/4 of 1 percent of the total picture, and possibly even less than that today. I'd write URLs that are easy to read for people and not repetitively keyword stuffed. Cheers!

Do old backlinks still help with new URL with 301 redirect? Also I added the www. How does this affect it all?
I changed my URL from exampledetailing. com to exampleautodetailing. com. It is redirected with a 301. Also, it is on Squarespace AND I opted to add the www. So will the old backlinks of exampledetailing. com still help the new URL exampleautodetailing. com or do I need to try and update all the links? Also, future links, do I need to include the www. or just the root domain of exampleautodetailing. com or even the whole https://wwwexampleautodetailing. com? I believe the www is considered a sub domain and a new entity on Google, so I am not sure how that works. Thank you!

Keyword Planner
VERY much a newbie with MOZ Pro (10 days into my 30-day trial), so for that, I apologize. I just want to get an idea of the time needed to accumulate data for keywords, and if I am doing all this right. I'm guessing this...use the tool and enter as many keyword possibilities as I can come up with for my website. Then wait a week or so. Then make a keyword decision. Is this the recommended or best practice? If it makes a difference, my website pertains to a local onsite service that I provide. Any web traffic more than 50 miles of my physical location would be a waste. My 1 on 1 session with Seun was great, but now I need to put it all together and make some traffic happen! Any other ideas, please throw them my way. If I'm completely off-base with this, feel free to send insults! Thanks, Billy

Best SEO Option for Multi-site Set-up
Hi Guys, We have a Business to Business Software Website. We are Global business but mainly operate in Ireland, UK and USA. I would like your input on best practice for domain set-up for best SEO results in local markets. Currently we have: example.com (no market specified) and now we are creating: example.com/ie (Ireland) example.com/uk (united kingdom) example.com/us (united states) My question is mainly based on the example.com/us website - should we create example.com/us for the US market OR just use example.com for the US the market? If the decision is example.com/us should we build links to the directory or the main .com website. To summarize there is two questions: 1. Advise on domain set-up 2. 301 or 302 Redirects with locale URLs?
Hi Mozers, I have a bit of a tricky question I need some help answering. My agency are building a brand new website for a client of ours which means changing the domain name (yay...). So! I have my 301's all ready to go for the UK locale, however, the issue I have is that the site will also eventually have French, German and Spanish locales - but these won't be ready to go until later this year. We will be launching in just English for September. The current site already has the French and German locales on it as well. Just to make sure I'm being clear, the site will be www.example.com for launch, but by lets say November, we will also have a www.example.com/fr/ and www.example.com/de/ site launched too. So what do I do with the locale URLs? As I said above, the exisitng site already has the French and German locales on it, so I don't particularly want to redirect the /fr/ and /de/ URLs to the English homepage, as I will want to redirect them to the new URLs in November, and redirecting more than once is bad for SEO right? Any ideas? Would 302s maybe be the best suggestion? Thanks! Virginia

Optimizing Local SEO for Two Locations
Hi there! I have a client that has just opened a 2nd location in another state. When optimizing for local I have a few questions: We're creating a landing page for each location, this will have contact information and ideally some information on each location. Any recomendations for content on these landing pages? The big question is dual city optimization. Should Include the city & state of BOTH locations in all my title tags? or should I leave that to the unique city landing pages? What other on-page optimizations should i consider across the site? Site Not Rankings After a Few Months
I have a client site that I am beating my head against the wall for right now. Three months into a 100% white hat campaign, we can't get him ranking in the top 150. Here's the cliffsnotes: Built a new wordpress website All on page SEO has been done and score an A+ for his primary kws Robots.txt is setup correctly .htaccess is setup correctly new domain multiple 95 DA, 50 PA links from reputable, national sites. Yext Local listings SSL, CDN, Speed optimized Has 19 pages indexed by Google Posting one blog a week for him Granted his primary keyword is a hyper competitive kw, but still, I've been doing this for 8 years and never seen a guy be stuck on the 16th page for so long for the sort of links we are building him. I'm genuinely stumped here and could use some help.

URL Keyword stuffing. service-city.com/product-service-city/ vs. service-city.com/product/
For example: tailoring-london.com/suits-tailoring-london/ or tailoring-london.com/suits/ The main keyword being targeted here is "suit tailoring london". The home page's main keyword is "tailoring london". Would love to hear your opinions. Many thanks 🙂

Page Title for a Local Shop
Hello everyone 🙂 I would like to have your opinion on one thing: I am working on a local shop selling pottery and other things. So I was thinking, would it make sense to title the page something like: “Pottery Object, San Francisco, Awesome Pottery” which means “keyword, location, company name”? Or is there a better way to optimize the title of the page for a local shop? Thank you very (very) much 🙂
