Google News Bug
-
During today and yesterday we are getting a lot of visits (Over 400) from http://news.google.com the visits are all at the same time and to different pages, the visits are very brief so much so that it pushes our bounce rate up to 69% in GA. Is there anything we can do to stop this?
Thank you in advance?

I agree with Linda. Google Search and Google News are two different things with two different user types. High bounce rates are more common with people scanning headlines and skimming articles. I've never heard of a site popping into Google News causing a Google Search penalty.
-
If that is your only issue, then it is unlikely that this will result in any penalty.
-
Thank you for your response, my only worry is do you get penalised if you have a high bounce rate, this is the 3rd day in succession we have had a lot of visits from Google news.
-
Traffic from Google news can tend to have a high bounce rate--many of the people who come to your site don't know you but are attracted by the headline and sometimes they find the page is not what they expect.
You can block the Google news crawler from certain pages that you think might result in a high bounce rate but you probably don't need to bother--as Ryan said, that does not sound like a lot of visits...

Ryan
Thank you. It looks like all of the visits have come from Google.
-
You should be able to see the google news page in more detail within Analytics by clicking through to it's details. That referrer should still have your article on it, well a blurb of your article.

Ryan
Thank you for your reply. I am not sure how to find which article if any has been indexed on Google news?
-
Have you identified what exact article is sending traffic to you via Google News? It sounds like a portion of your site was picked up as news worthy. 400 daily visits isn't a lot for a large number of sites and is typical of getting a page or site to go viral.

How does Google measure page position in Webmasters?
Does anyone know exactly how Google measures page position in Webmaster Tools? For example: In Google Webmaster Tools, we had a product which on the 22/12/15 was at position 7, and then dropped to position 112 on the 30/12/15. It then rose back up to position 7 on the 6/01/16 and then down to position 25 on the 16/01/16. What does this mean and why?

Setting up Google Analytics for Subsites
I currently have one main .com site and am planning on launching geo-location subsites .co.uk, .com.au, .ru, etc... Traffic will flow between both sites and some of the content on the subsites will be duplicate and therefore include a canonical tag to the main site. I want to set up GA to capture who is going to the subsites and vice versa and correctly capture crossover traffic. Any advice on implementing advanced analytics directly (or links to sources that will direct me the right direction for this project)

Traffic Down for Most Referrers - not just Google
Our traffic has taken a severe hit, over the past 3 weeks - down about 60%, which I had assumed was caused by the Penguin update. However on closer inspection of our analytics, our traffic is is down by between 30 and 50% for nearly all our referrers - including Bing and other search engines, referring sites, and even direct traffic! Google provides the vast majority of our traffic, so in terms of the absolute visitor count, the drop in Google traffic has the biggest effect - by some distance. But the fact that traffic is down by similar percentages suggest that Penguin isn't the cause of our troubles at all. We sell garden products in the UK, and it's just coming into peak season. Last year, May was one of our top months, External conditions - such as the very wet weather over the past month, economic gloom and doom - don't begin to explain this sudden and dramatic drop in traffic. We are very perplexed. If anyone has any bright ideas, I'd be interested to hear them. Ben

500 errors and impact on google rankings
Since the launch of our newly designed website about 6 months ago, we are experiencing a high number of 500 server errors (>2000). Attempts to resolve these errors have been unsuccessful to date. We have just started to notice a consistent and sustained drop in rankings despite our hard sought efforts to correct. Two questions... can very high levels of 500 errors adversely effect our google rankings? And, if this is the case, what type of specialist (what are they called) has expertise to investigate and fix this issue. I should also mention that the sitemap also goes down on a regular basis, which some have stated is due to the size of the site (>500 pages). Don't know if they're part of the same problem? Thanks.

Setting up Google Analytic Goals to a 3rd Party Site
I recently received help on a question I asked on SEOmoz but need additional clarification. I am trying to set up goals in Google Analytics for people who click on a “purchase botton” which sends them to PayPal. I created a Thank You page and tried to get PayPal to redirect to it, however, our customers only get to our site’s 404 page. Here is what I’ve done so far: Went into my PayPal account and turned the “Auto Return” to ‘on’ Under website payment preferences, I added the following URL http://www.teecycle.org/thank-youutm_nooverride1. (I formatted the URL this way because the person who provided me with help recommended using the format ?UTM_nooverride=1. However, our CMS system won’t allow “?” or “=”)
