Benefit of Guest Blogging with weak relevancy
-
No - not that awful kind of guest blogging Matt Cutts called time on - but legitimate blogging on quality websites. Just thought I'd get that out of the way first
I work for a legal services provider as a Content Marketing and PR Executive, and I have a regular spot guest posting on Search Engine People which I acquired in my previous role at an SEO agency. As I'm still working in the industry (in-house rather than for an agency) I thought I'd carry it on, not only because it's good for me personally, but because it'd also be a nice link building quick win from a good site with a strong DA.
My question is, with next to know relevancy between domain-domain, page-domain, page-page, is there much value in the link? To be clear, I'll be doing it anyway, but the answer might inform whether I do it under the guise of an employee of my company or just as myself.
Thanks all!

If the entire page where you're writing is about content marketing, on a site that is related to content marketing, chances are the link would line up fine.

I suppose you could look at it as:
Here's John Rooney writing about Content Marketing -> He works as a Content Marketer for this company -> Here's that company's website.
You could argue MAYBE that in this context the link makes sense from a human perspective. It's whether the algorithm can recognise that I guess.

Yup. Take it with a pinch of salt though as he hasn't put together the full report on it. Rand's WBF on this very topic though is definitely worth the watch. Cheers!

Thanks for the replies guys.
I guess this is the answer I was expecting to be honest. Somewhat frustrating I can't link back to the company I work for when blogging about something I know about and work with every day - but I suppose I can't expect Google to make that connection, and in reality it's not a "useful" link for anyone.
Interesting to see from the tests Matt-POP conducted that even one strong off-topic link (at least I take it from that comment we're talking about a single link) can cause a negative impact.

Rand recently did a WBF on this, and one of the comments by Matt in the post has an interesting back of the napkin result for his tests that were similar to what you're describing above here: http://moz.com/blog/are-on-topic-links-important-whiteboard-friday#comment-325645, mainly, "Category 3 (Off Topic, Strong Links) actually started taking sites DOWN with it. If we had a strong but off topic/spammy link, it hurt the site more than helped. We tested a few "generic PBN" sites that had decent effect on some sites, negative effect on others. It seemed to stem from relevance with what went up & down."
If it's not something that's likely (high percentage chance of interest) to help a user visiting the page, I'd avoid it. Cheers!

Hi, I would say the best way to answer this is to look at a general news site such as the BBC here in the UK. They have a huge domain the covers hundreds of topics. There is no way this site will have an overall relevance on the domain yet the links it provides will still provide a huge benefit. With this in mind, in your situation I wouldn't worry to much about the relevance of the domain. It is more around the relevance of the topic of the content itself.
In your case, I am assuming that the link you are referring to will be the author bio link at the bottom of the page. In this case I wouldn't concern yourself too much on the strength of this link. Ultimately it will be fairly low as in context links tend to get the most benefit if we are talking pure SEO here. By all means I think you should continue writing on the blog as it is in your field of expertise but make sure you are doing it to build your own personal brand and not  just for the sake of the link.

I have managed to land a few expert pieces on external sites for my company and would like to document that on our blog in the form of mini-blurbs which lead through to the article... but if I link back to it, is that bad practice?
Of course link sharing can be punishable if it is done to share juice, and I understand that on the surface it could look like link sharing, but in reality it would just be nice to document the different successes we've had. Thoughts?

Is it better to have backlinks from domains with medium DA, UR, using same language and good relevancy, or backlinks from domains with high DA, UR but using another language and with less relevancy?
Dear all, while I understand that quality backlinks with high DA, UR, same-language and relevancy would be best, would backlinks with high DA, UR but less relevancy and using languages other than the one used in my website be something good? Or would they do more harm than anything else and still be outcompeted by backlinks with lower DA, UR but same language and/or more relevancy? Thank you Frank

Disavow links from questionable blog
Hi everyone, I noticed today that we are getting quite a few backlinks from a blog that promotes some rather seedy ideals (it's called zoklet). Specifically, they are linking to some products we sell that prevent shoplifting, so I'm drawing some conclusions about their motives. I don't think the blog itself is spammy, but I'm just assuming that it's a bad neighborhood and we should distance ourselves from it. The only reason I'm questioning the disavow is because of the warnings involved and that it might affect our rankings if we do it. Any thoughts? Thanks.

PR4 blog but no data in OSE?
I've recently been asked to guest post on a site that appears to be PR4 but when checking the sites authority on OSE no data shows up. The site is http://www.osozo.com. I'm looking for opinions really, first of all on how it can be PR4 but OSE has no data on it and secondly whether it's a good site for me to post on? Any help much appreciated!

Multiple guest posts from one site have any effect on rankings?
I have started guest blogging and have sites asking me for more content. I understand that regular guest blogging is great for building authority as an author and has the potential to get more links through word of mouth and other sites linking to me. The more posts I do the more exposure I get. But if I have say 3 or 4 posts on an external site with each linking to my site (to a different url and with different anchor text) does that have any effect on rankings as all links come from the same domain? As I understand it links from different root domains are what matters. Presumably a site with links from 5 different sites with 10 links on each external domain totalling 50 links wouldn't rank as well as a site with links from 50 different domains (1 per domain)?

Link Building Through Blogs
A client of mine wants to look into new areas of link building after convincing them that their current link building strategies (purchasing multiple links from god knows where) was not working well for them. Essentially I felt they were spinning their wheels. Now, we are looking into content related blogs to get some honest links for their site. They sell sports equipment and we are looking at sports blogs to get links/partnerships. Most of these blogs want sponsorship fees or advertising fees. From an ethical standpoint I understand buying links is not the best idea. But because these are blogs that earn traffic, have relevant content, and can be helpful for the advertisement aspect to link to people who might be interested in their products as well. There shouldn't be a problem in acquiring a few of these links if the budget allows for it, correct? Also are blogs a good source to acquire links from?

Are Guest Post Anchor Text Links Evil?
Hi, In the recent free SEOMoz webinar about What's Ailing the Linkgraph, Rand Fishkin says that corporations try to get anchor text guest posts on his wife's blog and he suggests this is manipulative. Do you agree that anchor text links in guest posts are manipulative? Do you think that Google will take action against this tactic in the future? Thanks!

How do I distribute blog content?
Morning Mozzers! I work for an online wedding retailer and we add new, unique, high quality content to our blogs on a daily basis. After adding the new content we Tweet it and mention it on our Facebbok page. My question is this: how can I distribute the content to generate back links? Any example sites or case studies of things you guys have done in the past would be great! Thanks in advance.
