Recovered from Manual Penalty but rankings still suck
-
Hi All,
We got a penalty Last March 2014 ( Side Wide Link - unnatural links) which we recovered from quickly and this changed to Partial Match penalty (impact links)
which we recovered from back in December 2014. Our Site profile has been cleaned up but our rankings
still suck for some of our main keywords (+500) . Also our traffic and local rankings still suck in some cases. From an SEO point of view our site is pretty good, we've done everything google has recommended including schema.org, mobile responsive, unique content (which we write regulary) and we only have a few duplicate pages. Our domain
authority is better than our competitors but yet our rankings and traffic are still no way as good as theirs.
Do anyone know if recovering from an impact links penalty take longer than 4 months . I know that google says than it discounts those links but I get the feeling google may be looking at an old dataset due to not rerunning panda & penguin since our penalty was removed and this may be whats affecting things.
Does anyone have any ideas?
I am more than happy to post my url if someone fancies taking a quick look ? to see if it's anything obvious ?
thanks
Pete

Many thanks for you help and answer.
Our SEO agency has said our Site Profile is pretty clean now with most of our links being branded terms etc.
Our Domain Authority is only 27 , It was once as high as 30 and has been as low as 25 so we are
recovering slowly from that.
We will keep writing fresh content etc and hopefully when Penguin etc refreshes we will see an uplift.
Many thanks for your help. I will take a look at the post you suggested
thanks

Hi ,
Sorry for the late response, I've been away for the last couple of weeks.
Originally my rankings dropped like 80% , then when the side wide penalty was recovered, It improved by 50% of that drop.
When the Impact links penalty recovered, I was still ranking approx 6th - 10th for many local terms which previously I was ranking top 3.
thanks

If you had a manual unnatural links penalty then there's a really high chance that you were also affected by Penguin. The difference is that Penguin is algorithmic and that you won't see any official notification that you are affected.
The last official Penguin refresh was October 17, 2014. There may have also been refreshes on November 27 and Dec 5. If you got your manual penalty lifted in December it means that you will still need to wait for another Penguin refresh to see the full benefit of your cleanup. For a manual penalty, if the webspam team sees that your bad links are in your disavow file, then that's good. But, for Penguin, 3 things have to happen to see recovery:
1. You need to do a thorough disavow.
2. You need to wait for Google to recrawl all of the links in your disavow file which can take weeks to months.
3. You need to wait for a Penguin refresh or update to happen.
The other thing that is necessary as well is that you need to have a website that is worthy of ranking. It goes without saying that if you only ranked previously because of the power of self made links then recovering rankings is not likely.
With all of that said though, I've seen sites that have done good cleanups and seem to have trouble ever ranking again after a manual penalty which is very frustrating. My last SEW column was on this exact topic:
There is still a lot about Penguin that we don't understand.

out of interest, how far did the ranks drop originally and where are they now (approx)
this sounds like an algorithm penalty which we are also successfully managing a recovery for currently with good results..
check over optimisation and low quality links as apposed to just bad links identified by google.

Keyword rank drop, any advice?
Screen Shot 2021-08-26 at 19.02.18.png My search visibility dropped from around 13% a few weeks ago to 8.29%. I know that Google launched a bunch of updates in this past few weeks to ignore spam links, and I'm pretty sure that was the reason for the drop - some of the links to my site date back over 10 years and those links were garbage. Confusingly, at the same time, my Domain Authority went up by 1 to 32, then back down a week later. How can I restore my previous rank in the short term? We're designing a new site at the moment with vastly improved page speed, but I'm not sure what effect that will have yet (thespacecollective.com).

Drop in Rankings
UPDATE* I temporarily removed the images from the page to check if rankings would come back and they did. So Google made a recent update in the Netherlands where they look at your page for adult content (pictures). For us it was breast augmentations, before and after pics. END Hey Guys, We have a site for plastic surgery in the Netherlands. We ranked on number 2 if someone searched for breast augmentation. But sinds 31 of januari our ranking dropped outside the top 50. I did not get a warning or an other message in Search Console. We have a lot of pictures on the website displaying before and after pictures. So you see breasts. Does anybody know if google rolled out an update where they look at photo's with audult content? We didnt do any linkbuilding or other black hat stuff. Kind regards, Ruud

How to rank product pages?
Hi guys, Please advice me on something improving my product pages ranking. We are doing well for head terms, categories but not ranking for product pages. We have issues with product pages which I am think is hard to tackle. For instance we have duplicate products (different colors), duplicate content internally (colors) and from manufacturer websites. Product pages linked from sub-category i.e. Home > Category > Sub-Category (20 per page) using pagination for next 20 and so on. Product pages linked internally via widgets that says other Similar products, featured products etc. Another issue with our product pages is that we are using third party reviews platform and whenever users add reviews to product pages this platform creates an hyperlink to different anchors which is not relevant to product. Example - http://goo.gl/NUG652 Can somebody please give some advice on how to improve rankings for product pages. writing unique content for thousands of pages is not possible. Even our competitor not writing unique content.

Effect of I-Frame on Google Rank
My commercial real estate web site (www.nyc-officespace-leader.com) allows visitors to search for office space listings. The site sources listings through a third party and they are displayed in an i-frame. The i-frame directs visitors to listing pages such as: http://listings.nyc-officespace-leader.com/getspace.mpl?sp_id=A0173921&cust_id=offspldr Atleast 10,000 of these pages have backlinks to my site. My question is the following: Could these tens of thoudands of alpha numeric URLs be detrimental to my sites ranking on Google after the Panda/Penguin updates? SIte traffic dropped from 7,000 per month to about 3,300 after the April Google update. Rewriting content for dozens of pages and adding a blog have only somewhat mitigated the negative effects of Panda/Penguin. Could Google be viewing these links from the third party lisitng provider as a negative when they viewed these links as a plus before? Any downside to removing the third party links and parsing these listings from landlord websited and displaying them as part of my site with their own URL, title tag, description tag? Obviously the new URLS would not be alphanumeric. If these links have not caused the drop in traffic last April, what could be responsible? Thanks in advance for your opinion!!! Alan

The site ranks on page 4-5 with other page like privacy, about us, term pages. I encounter this problem allot in the last weeks; this usually occurs after the page sits 1-2 months on page 1 for the terms. I'm thinking of to much use the same anchor as a primary issue. The sites in questions are 1-5 pages microniche sites. Any suggestions is appreciated. Thank You

Pages that were ranking now are not?
Hi Folks Noticed something strange just now pages that were ranking on position 10 on Google for searches such as 'ufc trainer kinect best price' at the start of this week are no longer ranking? Is what has happened to the site the famous google dance or sandbox effect as the site only officially went live on Monday If this is the case what is the recommended course of action to get back ranking competitively again? as I have no idea on what has gone wrong as I has always tried to follow best practice from these forums and the SEOMOZ and YOUMOZ articles My site is www.cheapfindergames.com Many Thanks Ian
