Your tactics on improving organic search for a site in a struggling industry
-
We work with a client of ours with organic search initiatives.
The problem is: the industry (e.g. the core of the business) is sagging. It has been for a couple of years. And they're finally feeling these sagging losses.
Google Trends support this and shows it quite nicely. It pretty much mirrors organic search referrals as well. The industry (e.g. the core phrase that the company and its competitors have historically hit very hard) as well as Google Trends for the client (middle of the pack) and their two big competitors are attached.
Wondering if anyone else has had this type of circumstance with their clients and some of their go to tactics that helped them stop the skid (and even make it start going up).
Thanks

Perhaps they should look at re-branding the product offering before they look at ranking. Take a look at this inspirational video by Rory Sutherland.

I mean ... this depends why it's a struggling industry. If you're a buggy maker and cars are growing in popularity, you're nearly screwed. You'll go around Central Park a few times ... but you're never going to sell 10k in a year.
If you're a candlemaker and electrical lighting is taking over, however, redefine the product. Candles are 'romantic' and for 'when the power fails.' They're for 'good smells', etc.
If you're a camera manufacturer and digital cameras are kicking your film cam butts, start making digital cameras.
That's 3 different things - how you market those depends very much on what the problem is, how you want to solve it and then how you can go about marketing it to these new customers.

Hey There!
Well, this is somewhat of an uphill battle. I agree 100% with Patrick's response, unfortunately if you are in an industry that is sagging across the board, that makes things a little more difficult. However, there is always hope, creativity can and will always over come. One of my favorite examples of this is Blendtec. The CEO of Blendtec knew he had an amazing commercial/industrial blender but knew he was competing against Sony/HamiltonBeach/GE and other massive companies and he knew there was no way he could climb to the top based on old school SEO against giants like these. So he created a concept, "Will It Blend", a YouTube series which he essentially blends anything and everything from iPhones to Golf balls to see if it will in fact blend. He even blended a broom, literally. Anyway, he created a separate website, willitblend.com and linked domain that only to Blendtec.com which sent all SEO benefit to BlendTec's website, also 100% organic.
Anyway, if you look at the numbers BlendTec has drastically more backlins and WillItBlend still has more PA/DA than BlendTec, but all of that juice that WillItBlend generates, gets sent to BlendTec. All he did was create a fun way to interact with his appliance. Also making it on a separate domain I personally feel was smart because if something were to go wrong he could just cut the ties between WillItBlend and BlendTec!
Good Luck! Try and have some fun with it. Hope this helps!

-
What other opportunities do your service or business have?
-
Are there any new directions you can test out?
-
Try surveying the audience you do have
-
What do they want out of your product or service?
-
Moz has a good resource from 2010 that has some good pointers
-
Focus on areas that you are succeeding (Content-Gap SEO: A Potentially Untapped Opportunity)
Hope these help a bit! Let me know if you need any more help! Good luck!

Directories and Search Engine Site Submissions and Technorati Tags Important?
I use a wordpress for out website 50campfires.com and we have a site map set up along with google analytics and web master tools. I believe wordpress automatically sends information to the search engines with changes in the site map. Do I need to submit to search engines manually once a month? Is directories like DMOZ still relevant with SEO today? And what are your opinions on Technorati Tags? I never heard of them before reading this article. I m new to SEO and any insights are helpful. 2Sqv5C2.png EEQFpIx.png 2Sqv5C2.png

Does anyone know of an api for on site SEO?
I have searched for one, but really cannot find one that fits my needs. I am looking at making an on site grader / service that will check pages and point out SEO problems. One that I have found that I like is seorch.eu but they do not have an api. I do not want to reinvent the wheel if I do not have to. Also, the api does not have to be free, or it does not even have to be an api, it can be a self hosted application too.

Ecommerce internal search results pages
I'm working on a ecommerce site that allows product search results pages to be sorted a variety of ways (best selling, newest, by price). Each of these search filters creates a new url i.e. /all/best/1 and /all/best/2; /all/new/1 and /all/new/2; etc. These search results pages have been indexed and the site is receiving enough organic traffic from these pages that I don't want to add noindex, follow to them. I am planning on implementing rel=prev, rel=next for each filter, but I'm concerned about duplicate content considering I can't create unique meta data for each page. Should I canonical all pages to the first search results page without filters applied? Or any other ideas on how I should proceed?

Spanish version of site - best practice?
I need to create a Spanish version of an existing site. My idea was to have the Spanish content switch out the English content if the query string had something like ?l=es. It would also drop a cookie so that all other pages would switch out content as well. I do want the Spanish content to be indexed and rank in the search engines, though. I would include all of the Spanish versions (with the ?l=es) in the site map and link to them on every page with a link to the Spanish version. Does anyone have any experience with this? Is this a bad idea? Thanks! Tom

Sudden Site Rankings Drop
Good day guys, We have been following strict SEO strategies for the past 6 months, all sites have been improving incredibly well, all except one. The site in question is http://bit.ly/IH4pkM . The site is regarding automotive spray booth equipment. We were ranking on the first page for the keyword "spray booth" (which is the most important one), at place #4 for weeks on end. However since half-way last week, the site has been dropped to half-way the second page (#17). There are barely any crawler errors listed for our campaign on SEOMoz. There were several pages of which the meta description was missing, but that has been fixed earlier this week. When it comes to link building, I looked at what the top competitors were doing, and was looking for unique link building opportunities myself. We have received 0 webmaster tools warnings as well. I do not believe we are penalized due to the "penguin" update. After all, if you search for for the company's name in Google, it is still listed on there (# 2). Nor have we been part of dodgy link networks at all. So my question is, what do you guys believe made us drop the rankings? Is there some on-page issues I am overlooking? Any recommendations to restore out previous rankings? Kind Regards, Roderic

Search Results
I am sort of mystified at this . I have a homepage and it is for all intents and purposes optimized for the search term Charlotte electrician . If you type in Charlotte electrician I have no organic listing for this page . It does receive an A on the tool on this Site for the term target Charlotte electrician . Here is the URL http://www.providenceelectricnc.com/ now the strange thing is that for the search term electrician Charlotte the tool on SEO Moz gives me an F grade **as I would expect but I am the number one organic listing under electrician Charlotte . This is truly confusing to me it may have something to do with links but I don't see how at all . Thanks I've been studying search engine optimization and web development for about five years and appreciate any suggestion . this is a Joomla! site and I am running a lot of components and plug-ins . One combines CSS files and JavaScript files to minimizing HTTP requests . This particular component Seems to interfere with other scripts And is simply not compatible with certain other plug-ins . Perhaps it is the source or well I'm not sure thanks . ** http://www.providenceelectricnc.com/ tom.jpg 9sAhAAEAwMDAwMEAwMEBgQDBAYHBQQEBQcIBgYHBgYICggJCQkJCAoKDAwMDAwKDAwNDQwMEREREREUFBQUFBQUFBQUAQQFBQgHCA8KCg8UDg4OFBQUFBQUFBQUFBQUFBQUFBQUFBQUFBQUFBQU

Best Domain Name for Life Coaching Site
Hello, I am an NLP health coach. I am starting to work with both life threatening illnesses and minor diagnoses. NLP is a type of personal development. I'm wondering what your opinion of the best domain would be, keeping in mind branding, SEO, and usability/rememberability. The term "NLP" is not well known. I will be doing both phone coaching and in-person coaching. My other website (BobWeikel.com) is not very strong because of the lack of keywords in the domain, but it's easy to remember. Options are: NLPTrained.com BobWeikelHealthCoach.com BoiseHealthCoach.com (I'm in Boise Idaho) RobertWeikel.com or whatever you suggest.
