Vat conversion rates (UK)
-
Does anyone have any evidence about the impact of displaying or not displaying prices including VAT on your website on conversions?
A client wants to show prices excluding VAT so the prices look competitive with their competition who also display excluding VAT (20% UK sales tax). I have explained that the sudden 20% increase to the basket cost will put off a lot of customers (even if all prices are marked as excluding tax) but they will not listen.
We have previously displayed both prices but this looked messy and customers got confused. What I really need is some research that shows what the impact of doing this is (ignoring the fact that it is not even allowed by HMRC).
Any thoughts welcome!

Dirk, I perhaps was not clear enough - I am not suggesting that prices are displayed without VAT alone. We would display both (for the reasons you point out).
The point is that many non B2B customers get confused by 2 prices, particularly those from overseas and it makes the site look a mess.
My recommendation is emphatically to display just the inc VAT price as that is what everyone pays and it removes any confusion.
I guess this discussion proves that there is little evidence to show the impact of this on conversion rates.

I stand corrected! Thanks Dirk, this is great! =]

Read this, it's obvious
If you are selling to B2C customers in the UK you have to include the VAT in the price your list - it's a legal obligation (this is the case all over Europe)
Quote: Any VAT due is already included in the price of something you buy in a shop. No tax is added when you pay.

This is fair. I really like Tom's answer as well - lots to think about.
Have you considered surveying your audience or checking into what are your competitors doing? The issue is, this isn't an obvious yes or no, there are factors and you have to consider the audience, the industry, and how your site is set up. In my opinion, you're betting off testing these sorts of things as no two sites/audiences are the same.
-
Both valid answers of course - just was hoping for someone to say "read this - its obvious". It is such a common discussion with clients who serve trade and consumers but data seems thin on the ground. A/B testing hard to do on a small site and get valid results.
-
I think the biggest influencer in this decision would be what the client is advertising.
If they're advertising mainly B2B, exclude VAT. If it's B2C, include it.
There are exceptions to the rule - for example, websites like Scan.co.uk and eBuyer.com will typically show ex VAT prices more prominently, but that's because, while being a retail website, most of their bigger orders come other businesses.
So I would ask who is it that your client typically serves - businesses or individuals?
If it is individuals you are obliged to show the VAT price before the purchasing decision (add to basket) has been placed, pretty sure that's a legal requirement. You can display both, as Scan and Ebuyer too, and that will suffice. And if you're paying for Google Shopping inclusion, Google is sophisticated enough to know which price is your VAT and non-VAT price and will show the VAT prices in its results (if applicable).
Nothing wrong with showing both - but if you plan on showing one, it all comes down to who the website is intending to serve.

Hi there
This really could go either direction - showing the VAT or not. Some users might appreciate that sort of thing, but you should really A/B test this sort of thing instead of choosing one side or another.
You can take advantage of testing these scenarios:

Google ExperimentsTesting will give you a clearer picture of what route to take in this situation based on your audience. Every site and audience is different, so testing is the best route to go. You should check out VWO Resources section - it's packed with ideas and stats based on industry and the types of tests you want to run.
Hope this helps! Good luck!

Hi,
I am sharing my personal experience on my website with .uk extension. In categories pages I am showing excluded price. When customer click on 'buy now' button they go to product page where I am showing both price including & excluding vat both but I have highlighted included price with bold & some graphics. For me it is working well & conversion rate is fine.
Thanks

Ideas on multi layered conversion opportunities
I was speaking with an SEO and he brought up multilayered conversion opportunities - means of capturing a users info dependent on the point in the purchase process they are. The two examples he used were a user who just wants to download a brochure to "window shop" and a user who is ready to buy and wants to get a price. Just curious if anyone had any additional ideas for means of conversion other than the 2 above and any additional thoughts or ideas on the matter.

How to track conversions from a third party email campaign?
Heyy.. New to the Moz community, first question so here goes! I'm going to be running an email campaign with an e-magazine and I want to know how to track conversions from the email they're sending out so I can monitor success/failure. I've found Google's URL builder:

Question about conversion rate in ppc

I really don’t have any data to compare to… For example, this is campaign from the insurance niche from the uk : Clicks – 132
Impr – 6,958
CTR- 1.90%
Conversion – 20 (Not inducing the one that calls the office)
Conversion rate – 16%
Total cost – 704£ How can i know by these number that the campaign is working ? Same here (T-shirts campaign for the Spanish market): Clicks – 1,219
Impr – 26,177
CTR- 4.66%
Conversion – 56
Conversion rate – 4.5%
Total cost – 493€ Probably you will say, check how much you spend and how much you got back ?
This is also a problem for me. I can see the numbers of the conversion but because we are not eCommerce so i cant really know the total income. Do you know if there’s is a way that each for quote that coming to our system
so i will know where it came from ? Like a comment in the url or something ? I think that 90% of our income/quotes comes from the organic as we are ranking very high in Google so its a bit mixed in the system. Any feedback or tips here on this will be very welcome…0 -
Is it possible to set a Goal conversion tracking from a subdomain to a root domain?
Hi Mozzers, Here is an issue I am going through: I have a root domain(www.example.com) that is the core website where you are able to schedule a service I have a subdomain (sub.example.om) that is part of content strategy offering free tips and follows a different branding strategy. There are internal links from sub to root domain I have a GA subdomain tracking code installed on every page for both domains I would love to set goal tracking on GA for visitors coming to my subdomain, then going to root domain and then schedule a sevices? Is this possible? If it is, can someone show me a How To because I tried it anddidn't work? Thanks mozzers!

Why has my bounce rate gone in to orbit since moving the same content to a new site?!
I moved our site to a wordpress theme over the christmas break. All content is pretty much the same word for word, and I think the new site looks much, much better than the old one. Why then, has our overall bounce rate gone from 7-8%, up to 74%? Bounce rates for some KW focused internal pages have gone from 2-3% to similar 70+% in some cases. Just to confuse things further, I have also changed the name and branding for the site to differentiate us from a competitor and stop the confusion we've experienced at times. But, I can't see how the new logo would cause and extra 65% of visitors to leave straight off! I really don't want to go back to the old name and don't think that's the answer anyhow, but I may have to test it out of sheer desperation. There's only a static holding page for the old site now as a reference point for people searching the old name (not many). So I've attached a screenshot of how it looked below. Also at http://imgur.com/aM5o9. The new site is at flatroofs.co.uk. I have just noticed that by placing the previous 'more information' links a secondary menu in the left widget area rather than on the page, they are less noticeable especially if you scroll down to the bottom of a page, where the only links are in the footer? Again though, if 75% of people are put off this easily something else must be at play! Any advice/suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance, Danny. aM5o9.png?1

Low conversion rate, high ticket item... but not THAT high
Oh great mozzers, I fall at your feet... I feel like I'm going insane... My client, 35 Degrees (http://35DegreesSteaks.com) is quite the mystery. I handle SEO and paid search for them, and we're doing great in those areas... however, we're just not seeing the conversions once I deliver these folks to the site. The people are targeted, the keywords are sound, and from what I can see, the checkout process isn't a mess... but they are just not getting the sales. We're currently starting to test some price points with some newer, lower cost "intro packages", so we'll see if that's one of the pain points. I'm also in the process of convincing them to include a Verisign or some other logo in the checkout process. However, I was hoping the great minds here could take a quick look and see if I'm missing anything else. Thanks in advance! Jeff
