Duplicate categories how to make sure I don't get penalized for this
-
Hi there
How would I go about fixing duplicate categories?
My products sell in multiple category areas and some overlap the other - how can I go about making sure that I don't get penalised for this? Each category and content is unique but my advisors offer different tools and insights.

Thanks for your response Patrick! This has helped alot!!! So clear! Thanks for going into more details about the canonical tags - as this part was confusing! lol
Thanks I have set it to www as the preferred
With regards to the canonical tags - should I use this for ALL pages? or just the category pages? Or just pages I feel have similar content? Would it be just safe to add it to every page?

Hi Justin
When it comes to canonical tags, it's a best practice. I just like to apply them so that each page "owns" the content on that page in the eyes of the search engine. Especially when some content is on more than page, like a portion of your staff's profiles - I would definitely put a canonical tag on the psychic's profile pages since some of their bios appear on other pages.
The reason I brought up the non www. URL is because if for some reason someone links to the non www. version of your site or a page on your site, it's going to return a 404 error like you are seeing. You'll notice that if you goto http://www.zenory.com/profile/psychic-ginny it automatically redirects to where it is supposed to go. This is just to cover your bases in case there is a linking error somewhere.
Since your site is using "www." - I would use that version. You'll see under Set Your Preferred Domain in Google Webmaster Tools that they recommend staying consistent in your preferred domain and how your site is set up.
Hope this helps! Let me know if you have any questions or comments! Good luck!

Hi Patrick
Thanks alot for your response, and sorry for my vague explanation.
Yes, you are correct - I was concerned that my staff are listed in the categories section as duplicate. Every page is going to be unique in content. Thanks for the heads up! Should I apply the canonical tag for every page? And could you please explain the non-www url? I see there is a settings in WMT that I need to apply - under the add your preferred version should I set this up to - Display URLs as http://bit.ly/1yhz96v

Hi Justin
I am not entirely sure I am following, but are you worried about your staff appearing on multiple categories? From what I can, that's not an issue - you have unique content to the page and service. The list of psychics shouldn't be an issue.
I would check your canonical tag situation, though. I noticed the site doesn't have any, just a heads up.
Also, your non www. URLs don't work - here is an example.
Let me know if I am understanding!

Do we get de-indexed for changing some content and tags frequently? What is the scope in 2017?
Hi all, We are making some changes in our website content at some paragraphs and tags with our main keywords. I'm just wondering if this is going to make us de indexed from Google? Because we recently dropped in rankings when we added some new content; so I am worried whether there are any chances it will turn more risky when we try to make anymore changes like changing the content. There are actually many reasons a website gets de indexed from Google but we don't employ any such black hat techniques. Our website got a reputation with thousands of direct traffic and organic search. However I am curious to know what are the chances of getting de indexed as per the new trends at Google? Thanks

How does Google decide what content is "similar" or "duplicate"?
Hello all, I have a massive duplicate content issue at the moment with a load of old employer detail pages on my site. We have 18,000 pages that look like this: http://www.eteach.com/Employer.aspx?EmpNo=26626 http://www.eteach.com/Employer.aspx?EmpNo=36986 and Google is classing all of these pages as similar content which may result in a bunch of these pages being de-indexed. Now although they all look rubbish, some of them are ranking on search engines, and looking at the traffic on a couple of these, it's clear that people who find these pages are wanting to find out more information on the school (because everyone seems to click on the local information tab on the page). So I don't want to just get rid of all these pages, I want to add content to them. But my question is... If I were to make up say 5 templates of generic content with different fields being replaced with the schools name, location, headteachers name so that they vary with other pages, will this be enough for Google to realise that they are not similar pages and will no longer class them as duplicate pages? e.g. [School name] is a busy and dynamic school led by [headteachers name] who achieve excellence every year from ofsted. Located in [location], [school name] offers a wide range of experiences both in the classroom and through extra-curricular activities, we encourage all of our pupils to “Aim Higher". We value all our teachers and support staff and work hard to keep [school name]'s reputation to the highest standards. Something like that... Anyone know if Google would slap me if I did that across 18,000 pages (with 4 other templates to choose from)?

What if White Hat SEO does not get results?
If company A is paying 5k a month and some of that budget is buying links or content that might be in the gray area but is ranking higher than company B that's following the "rules" and paying the same but not showing up at all, what's company B suppose to do?

Duplicate Content
Hi, I have a website with over 500 pages. The website is a home service website that services clients in different areas of the UK. My question is, am I able to take down the pages from my URL, leave them down for say a week, so when Google bots crawl the pages, they do not exist. Can I then re upload them to a different website URL, and then Google wont penalise me for duplicate content? I know I would of lost juice and page rank, but that doesnt really matter, because the site had taken a knock since the Google update. Thanks for your help. Chris,

Does Google+ make a huge difference?
I run a website that's been ranked well for good keywords related to our business for some time. It was founded back in 2007 and has been there a while. Recently a new site has popped up that ranks brilliantly for everything. It's a new site, and the only redeeming factor I can see is that it has an AddThis box showing the Facebook Likes and Google Plus Ones, and they are around 400 Facebook Likes and 80 Google+ (for every page that ranks). Any other pages on their site which doesn't have any Facebook likes or Google Plus Ones, they don't rank. Our site doesn't have any likes or pluses. Is this making the difference? I stress that other than this our sites are very similar, other than the fact we've been around over 5 years.

Here's some more proof white hat SEO works
I guess this is the most logical place to share this with you. I do SEO for many sites. I've recently been focusing on two in particular for the same client. We used Netfirms SEO services to get links--he insisted--which basically consists of writing articles in broken English and placing them all over blog networks with our desired anchor text. On the other site, I simply refused to employ those services. This was the client's main site, and was way too important to mess around with. I built links myself, the legit way. Long story short, for months I watched the shady, black hat site climb and climb in the SERPs, while the white hat one kept falling. This morning, I checked my SEOmoz campaigns and my white hat site went from #8 to #2 and my black hat site went from page 2 to no longer being in the top 50. Just another example of what's been happening with Google lately and how great it is. Interestingly, the black hat site never got a warning in GWT about buying links. Now I just have to figure out a way to break the news to my boss and tell him I told him so without actually using those words.

Need a Service to get back links- info on Youtube PR Ranking
I have about 4000 you tube video urls that I need someone to submit for comment links, and profile links, and other links above pr2 and above. (will consider lower pr too). The ones I see when searching, don't seem to be able to understand how to use their submitters. Yes I know PR most likely will not be passed, but at least the vid will rank better with higher pr. My pr4 vids do. It seems to be that you tube vids are easier to gain pr. When I do a link search for pr5 vid urls, it doesn't seem to return links that justify the PR, so any info on that is appreciated. Any comments about how I should not do this or any form of this will not be appreciated. Thanks
