Canonical or No-index
-
Just a quick question really.
Say I have a Promotions page where I list all current promotions for a product, and update it regularly to reflect the latest offer codes etc.
On top of that I have Offer announcement posts for specific promotions for that product, highlighting very briefly the promotion, but also linking back to the main product promotion page which has a the promotion duplicated. So main page is 1000+ words with half a dozen promotions, the small post might be 200 words, and quickly become irrelevant as it is a limited time news article.
Now, I don't want the promotion page indexed (unless it has a larger news story attached to the promotion, but for this purpose presume it is doesn't). Initially the core essence of the post will be duplicated in the main Promotion page, but later as the offer expires it wouldn't be. Therefore would you Rel Canonical or just simply No-index?

But it's the date that makes them different! As in if I was specifically looking for info on 2013 I wouldn't WANT the 2014 page to be served and vice versa.
I would leave them both indexed - assuming the data is entirely different in each.
-
OK, but using Canonical for say:
Black Friday sales Roundup 2013 to Black Friday Sales Roundup 2014
is ok? Or should I leave both indexed. Both are quality pages, but targeting virtually the same keywords., apart from a date.

That is interesting thanks. I do actually have links to further information in exactly the way you say.
Including some basic information about the product could work... I will give it some thought, as I will need to make sure it is of sufficient quality.
Well, for definite it looks like I am using "canonical" incorrectly
Work to do...

^ I agree with Martijn here. Great point.

Hi there
If it were me - leave the promotion indexed because you want that promotion to be promoted and people are always looking for deals. Also, take a look at the Customer Journey from Google to see where opportunities lie in getting that promotion page and circulating - you could be missing some big opportunities.
I would also (from the promotions page) have a "Learn more about this product" sort of button so that the users that do land on that page can get more information - especially if you have more content about the product. Some customers will land there not ready to buy, but will be looking for information - get the the information they need and quickly.
You could bulletpoint the information on these smaller pages so people can quickly read and assess benefits. But in my opinion, I am not seeing a reason to canonicalize these or noindex them. Unless I am misunderstanding - if that's the case, please let me know!
Hope this helps a bit - good luck!

I'd say noindex as it's pretty hard to point the canonical to 1 page where there would be multiple promotions.

Is something wrong with my index after https switch?
I have previously switched sites to https but this one is behaving a little different. On September 19th I switched to https. I did 301 redirects at the .htaccess, added it to search console, and since we are using Magento I changed the base url. In the past when I have done this the http site index just gradually drops while the https site gradually rises. In early October the http site started to slightly drop but since 10/23 there have been no changes. For the https site it started to increase up until 10/23 then stayed flat. Why have they stayed stuck like that for a month?

Changing Canonical Tags on Indexed Pages that are Ranking Well
Hi Guys, I recently rolled out a domain wide canonical tag change. Previously the website had canonical tags without the www, however the website was setup to redirect to www on page load. I noticed that the site competitors were all using www and as far as I understand www versus non www, it's based on preference. In order to keep things consistent, I changed the canonical tag to include the www. Will the site drop in rankings? Especially if the pages are starting to rank quite well. Any feedback is appreciated. Thanks!

Google Frequently Indexing - Good or Bad?
Hi, My website is only 4 months old and receives about 40 to 50 organic visits every day. It currently has about 100 pages out of which only 3-4 rank in the top 10 for the target KWs. I usually try to publish, at least 1 article a day but sometimes certain articles are more than 2000 words long with a few of infographics and hence takes way more time (maybe even 3 days to publish one) Only over the last week, I am observing that every time i am publishing a page (usually daily) google is indexing them the same day. This I have heard happens for moderately big sites but my site is really small at this stage. Note: For the first 80 pages, I used to "fetch as googlebot" in webmasters as otherwise my site would be crawled once in 2 weeks but over the last 3-4 weeks, i rely on googles scheduled visits. Is this a good or bad sign? I would like to assume its good because of my engagement. Though for only organic visits, my Gogle Analytics bounce rate is 65% in analytics out of the remaining 35%, the avg time on site >7 mins. That means if someone sticks to my site, they consume a lot of my content. Also, since analytics' bounce rate is not same as the search bounce (back button) I would like to consider that the bounce is actually lesser than that.

HTTPS pages - To meta no-index or not to meta no-index?
I am working on a client's site at the moment and I noticed that both HTTP and HTTPS versions of certain pages are indexed by Google and both show in the SERPS when you search for the content of these pages. I just wanted to get various opinions on whether HTTPS pages should have a meta no-index tag through an htaccess rule or whether they should be left as is.

Indexing techniques
Hi, I just want a confirmation about my indexing technique, if is good or can be improved. The technique is totally whitehat and can be done by one person. Any suggestions or improvements are welcome. I create the backlinks ofcource first 🙂 I make a list on public doc from Google. On the doc are only ten links. After I digg it , and add some more bookmarks 5-6. I tweet the digg and each doc. (my 2 twitter accounts have page authority 98) I like them in Fb. I ping them thru ping serviecs. Thats it. Works ok for moment. Is anything what I can do to improve my technique? Thanks lot
