Should we go after this main keyword?

Hello,
We run an online store. The main content keyword for our niche is very competitive, but if I was going to go look up information and I was one of our customers, that is exactly what I would type in - this main general keyword. We have an expert in the field to write it and plenty of time.
Although the main keyword is competitive, there are many many subkeywords that are a lot less competitive that would be answered in the article. It's tough to find good topics in this niche.
We're thinking about doing a "Complete Guide to X". We would have far less backlinks and authority for about half of the 30 keywords it will cover than our main competitors.
Should we do this and spend the next couple of years working on it, or should we perhaps target a smaller topic?
Any advice is appreciated.

We don't take phone calls from customers, but we give very fast and detailed email support. This allows us to answer questions in writing and by kicking that writing up a notch by refining it on subsequent questions we then have an article to post on the site. Add a few photos or drawings and its ready to go.
No phone calls reduces the number of interruptions. Then as your content library grows you get fewer and fewer questions and many of your email questions can be answered with a link to one or two articles.
Our email messages to customers look like the answers to questions that Patrick Delehanty posts in Moz Q&A - and I think people appreciate that.

We launched a new small retail site and did that for about one year. Two people, working at least 1/2 of our time. Then we took a break for a year and saw good results. Then we attacked again for about another year, producing more informative content than all of our retail competitors and the manufacturers combined. Now we are not #1 for the root terms, but at about 4 and 5 behind Amazon, another major retailer and an large info site. However, we own the turf, often with two or three pages at the top of the SERPs, for all of the secondary and tertiary money terms that I can think of. Plus we hold good to great SERPs on tons and tons of the replacement part, fix it, and how to do it queries. We continue to toss content at this site as we get new ideas from customer questions and our own enthusiastic use of the products.

Start posting detailed answers to all of the most frequestly asked questions that you get from customers, all of the things that they don't ask but should know, all of the things that will delight or surprise them, and even the things that will change their mind about purchasing ( returns suck). Flood the SERPs with this stuff for the next six months, then evaluate, see what of these contents are pulling traffic or making conversions and if you see progress attsck for another six months.

Flood the SERPs with this stuff for the next six months, then evaluate, see what of these contents are pulling traffic or making conversions and if you see progress attsck for another six months.

Keywords to Concepts: The Lazy Web Marketer's Guide to Smart Keyword ResearchI wouldn't focus on specific keywords solely - I would look at variations and topics that are relevant to those keywords. I would build out as much content as you could that is relevant and useful to your audience, and at the same time, relevant to your business model. Never build content for the sake of building content - it's a slope that doesn't lead to anything except wasted time and efforts.
You should never run out of ideas either. Your entire team is full of content ideas. Brainstorm as a team, talk to each other, ask each other questions, etc. I would check out this piece from Search Engine Land called Making Customer Support Part Of Your SEO Program. You could also interview your customers or survey them as well on what they'd like to see from your website! This will maximize your potential for picking up long tail search as well.
I wouldn't worry about having a smaller backlink profile and a smaller domain authority. While you work on your content buildout I would also do some competitive analysis to see what competitors are doing and how you can implement (tweaked of course for your business - you're unique) some of the tactics you find there. There are always opportunities, especially if you have a local SEO element to what you do.

It sounds like you may be better off targeting the long tail keywords that pertain to your online store. If you're looking at putting together a "complete guide to main keyword" and it's going to take you a few years, imagine where your already strong competition will be by then. Seems to me that writing shorter articles on a regular basis about the subkeywords would be more effective, especially if those keywords are not near as competitive. If topics are hard to come by, that means there should be less competition and you've got a chance to create unique content that provides value to your customers. Does your store have a blog? Would hate to see you put all your eggs into one keyword basket so to speak, and nothing happens.

Site Title When Your Domain name is the keyword
Hello, I've been struggling with an issue for years. I own UsedCubicles.com. I'm ranked very well, the site generates leads and income on a regular basis. However, I never know what to name the site on the home page. The main keyword I go after is obviously "Used Cubicles". I also have product category named "Used Cubicles". I know google doesn't recognize my Used Cubicles product category as conical and reverts to the home page. I would rather Google use my categories more effectively to rank content or pages. My current site title on the home page is NOT GOOD. Used Cubicles | Usedcubicles.com. Im nervous to change it, however because Im not sure if its helping me rank for the keyword, which I do. For years I was #1 across the country but lately its been dropping. Any advice is appreciated.

Main menu duplication
I am working on a site that has just gone through a migration to Shopify at the very same time as Google did an update in October. So problems from day 1. All main menu categories have subsequently over the past 6 weeks fallen off a cliff. All aspects of the site have been reviewed in terms of technical, link profile and on-page, with the site in better shape than several ranking competitors. One issue that i'd like some feedback on is the main menu which has 4 iterations in the source. desktop desktop (sticky) mobile mobile (sticky - appears as a second desktop sticky but I assume for mobile) These items that are "duplicated" menus are the top level menu items only. The rest of the nested menu items are included within the last mobile menu option. So desktop menu in source doesn't include any of the sub-menu items, the mobile version carries all these there are 4 versions of the top level main menu items in source Should I be concerned? Considering we have significant issues should this be cleaned up?

Google’s Hummingbird and Keyword Cannibalization
My client wants to have keywords added on every product with the product name , apparently some seo guru told him that hummingbird is all about key phrases and long tail keywords. As i know hummingbird lends to understand the intent and contextual meaning of the query. The issue is if I add the keywords on for e.g oak furniture on all of my product title,And we are using zen-cart platform and it will change the internal anchor text on the product listing page. It will cause a Cannibalization issue. Question1. I just need help to reply to client that adding keyword can cause detrimental to ranking. Question 2. Avoiding keyword cannibalisation in Wordpress Structure
Hi all, I've been planning the WordPress structure for a client for a long time, and soon need to get started. I keep coming back to this problem / question, whereby there will be a static Page with a name like "Christmas Collection", but there also has to be a Category called "Christmas" to accomodate new content. Is this likely to cause serious keyword cannabalisation? It's a non-ecommerce site To elaborate we need to have the following static Pages: christmas collection easter collection halloween Collection and each of these Page's will be populated with related Posts (based on category ID) after the Page's content. And these corresponding Categories need to be similarly named. As there's no apparent relation between Pages and Categories, I keep coming back to the concern that having a Page named "Christmas Collection" and a Category called "Christmas" is a big SEO NO NO. Redirecting Existing Domains to My Main Site
Hi I have a main property related website featuring different countries around the world. I also have many different seperate country websites 20+. All keyword rich domains with a good 9 years+ domain age and PR3's with decent links and moz rankings and unique content. Many of the sites are very low Alexa rank now and receive little traffic. I don't have the time now to spend on each of the individual domains and am wanting to consolidate them and their PR juice to the corresponding country page of my main website. My question is - is it possible - will google see this as me trying to manipulate them and is my main site likely to suffer from any penalties or downgrading? Thanks for your input.

Shortening Keywords in a title tag
in my title tag i want to have: 3D Renders of Office Refurbishment & Interior Design Kent | Complete Group which unfortunatly is longer than 70 characters, however, to make it fit in 70 characters i could put: 3D Renders of Office Refurb & Interior Design Kent | Complete Group Notice that refurbishment has been changed to refurb, would this be ok for SEO purposes?

What is the best approach to a keyword that has multiple abbreviations?
I have a site for which the primary keyword has multiple abbreviations. The site is for the computer game "Football Manager", each iteration is often referred to as FM2012, FM12 or Football Manager 2012, the first two can also be used with or without spaces inbetween. While this is only 3 keywords to target, it means that every key phrase such as "FM2012 Tactics", must also be targeted in 3 ways. Is there a recommended approach to make sure that all 3 are targeted? At present I use the full title "Football Manager" in the the title and try to use the shorter abbreviations in the page, I also make sure the title tags always have an alternative e.g FM2012 Tactics Two specific questions as well as general tips: Does the <abbr>HTML tag help very much?</abbr> Are results likely to differ much for searches for "FM 2012" and "FM2012" i.e. without the space.

Keyword Ranking Question
I have recently hired a SEO company to help with our keyword. My question is what are the best tools to use to verify what that are reporting. I can do an unpersonalized search, but I am likely still getting the my local results. I have been using the SEOmoz rank tracker in the past but for some reason it is not able to retrieve results over the past day or so. Are there any other good tools to check ranking for an exact url at the for non-localized, non personalized results? Thanks for the suggestions.
