Hotel Local Listings Greatly Varying With Date
-
Searching for accommodation in a local region brings up a local listing block (e.g. http://puu.sh/irEoJ/635140594d.png). When clicking through to the block and changing dates, the order of the listings vary greatly. See attachments for 4 samples.
How is Google deciding to order these listing blocks?
I initially speculated they are pulling availability rates from Online Travel Agents like Expedia or Booking.com, but doubt this to be the case given a lot of those listings do not have Google Hotel Ads and smaller operators do not have their distribution system hooked up to Google Hotel.

Hi Fastrack!
That's very interesting - sounds, then, like there has been a change. Maybe what you were seeing was Google testing something? Thanks for updating this thread with your observation.

The search results are not varying AT ALL now.

Hey There,
I'm just sorry I didn't have more knowledge to share on this topic. I wish I had 4-5 hotel clients I could begin tracking in this regard. One thing I did wonder is, apart from price, could availability have something to do with this? For example, as a given hotel approaches booked status, could it be falling in rank, while hotels still in need of bookings move up, guaranteeing more transactions? Another idea would be deals or specials for given dates. Could these increase rank for a given date ... even based on user behavior like click-thrus, temporarily boosting rank? I think a test would need to define variables like this to begin drawing any conclusions. It would be great if someone with a good handful of hotel clients could do a study.

Thanks for you reply Miriam.
That SEJ piece emphasized what I already knew about local listings with a mention of pricing. The rest is just info about Google Hotel Finder.
Pricing is the only variable I can think of that would explain variances in date selection, but this ignores listings with no price. It seems most changes come from the different date range rather than date.

Hi Fastrack!
I'm sorry your good question hasn't received a reply yet. Unfortunately, I've never marketed a hotel and so am lacking education on this topic. Your screenshots are very interesting. This is Google's own Help Doc, but unsurprisingly, it does not explain rankings:
https://support.google.com/hotelfinder/?hl=en
This SEJ article from 2013 suggests some possible factors you might want to take a glance at, but as it's a bit old, I'm not sure how current the info is:
http://www.searchenginejournal.com/google-hotel-finder-war-hotel-serp-listings/67152/
Here's a beginner's guide that is more complete and more recent:
http://www.buuteeq.com/blog/a-hotels-guide-to-google-hotel-finder/
Honestly, it's interesting to me that there seem to be few studies about what influences rank in this Google feature. I'm not finding a ton that is recent or conclusive. An enterprising Local SEO firm that manages numerous hotels should really do a study on this. So sorry not to have better info for you - there doesn't seem to be a lot out there. I'm hoping if anyone in the community has hands-on experience with this industry, they can shed some further light.

Local News or National News backlinking?
Hello guys, I got an two offers, one from national newspaper and one from local newspaper (both online and printed editions, but here is online edition relevant.) to write about my company because we had some remarkable results in our niche. They would write a text about 2.000 words long and put a backlink to my website with the anchor text of my choice! The national newspaper has DA 49, whereas local newspaper has DA 39 but comes from the same city where we are based and writes just about the specific city and district in this city. Which one would you choose for your SEO?

How to tell Google My Business what area is local to my company?
Hello Mozers I've been stumped by the changes in the interface with Google My Business. I used to be able to set up the area for which I wanted a business to cover. Now I can't find anyway to tell Google. The company I work for is in St Albans and our main workload is London. It would be helpful if I could actually control what Google Local sees as Local for my company, i.e. to encompass central London which is only 19 miles away. Can someone give me an idiots guide has to how to tell Google the area I'd like our local listing to cover? Thanks

Removing Unverified Listing From Google
We have an old unverified listing that has our information on it, but we can't get it off google. I told them months ago it was closed, and it is marked as closed in Google...but it still shows up. Moz Local is telling me this is an inconsistency that hurts our local rankings. I went to delete the page from our Google Business/Place, but if I did that, the warning said that I would just not have access to the page, and that the listing would still show up on google. How do I permanently get rid of those thing, so it's not longer an inconsistent listing? Ruben

Concerned about cannibalization for local SEO results. Should we move some of our location pages to a subdomain?
Currently we are providing local SEO recommendations for a well known pharmacy chain. Like most major brands they enjoy multiple organic (not just 3 pack results) listings when people search for local phrases such as "Dallas pharmacy clinics'". The issue is that all these listings are coming from the same domain page. We are seeing multiple listings both branded and non-branded search queries. Our concern is that Google will someday decide to choose one listing as the most authoritative and nix the rest of the local listings which will reduce their first page search engine saturation. To maintain first page saturation we are considering recommending to the client that they move some of their location listings

to a subdomain (different IP address) to avoid a Google "clean up". Please note that our client is certainly not using any "doorway" pages but some of these are very scarce on content. They do not have an issue with duplicate content either. By using subdomains could we help maintain our client's first page saturation? Any links to articles would be much appreciated.0 -
Benefits of a verified listing vs. unverified
Is there any additional benefit to claiming a business listing other than locking it from being edited? It would seem to me that as long as the business information is consistent and crawlable, the SEO value would be the same right?
