Duplicate content, the distrubutors are copying the content of the manufacturer
-
Hi everybody!
While I was checking all points of the Technical Site Audit Checklist 2015 (great checklist!), I found that the distrubutors of my client are copying part of the content to add it in their websites.
When I take a content snippet, and put it in quotes and search for it I get four or five sites that have copied the content. They are distributors of my client.
The first result is still my client (the manufacturer), but... should I recommend any action to this situation. We don't want to bother the distributors with obstacles.
This situation could be a problem or is it a common situation and Google knows perfectly where the content is comming from?
Any recommendation?
Thank you!

I recommend the manufacturer creates two separate descriptions - one for themselves, and one for their distributors. Requires more work, but I think is a nice solution to this problem.

I will recommend that too. Thank you!

Very useful! Thanks!

Thank you Patrick!

One other aspect to consider it "fetch for google". Google sometimes takes time to naturally index content. Then often for a period - google index the first in time content that was indexed first (makes sense!). Hence if affiliates are copying your content and using fetch for google, (and you are not) they may get an advantage of a few days / weeks - until google sorts it out.
It is a great tool. So if you know this practice is going on I would make "fetch for google" mandatory.

How much of your content are they using? If it is a small snippet, no need for concern. If it is a large amount, then yes, as Patrick says, a canonical tag on the distributors' sites would be good. But some people won't do that for whatever reason. And sometimes people don't like to put outside links on ecommerce pages that might take people away from a transaction.
Even in that case, you are OK though. Duplicate content doesn't cause a penalty as such, it just makes Google pick which one to show in search results and drop the others. It sounds like your client is established as the content originator, so they won't be the ones to be dropped.
If you wanted to be especially helpful to your distributors, you might tell them about this and frame it as something good they could do for themselves, rather than for you. "You know that since a lot of the content on your page is from our page, you run the risk of your page not being findable in search. Maybe you could write some special content about how you are featuring our widget in your special blue widgets collection and only use a small amount of the content from our page. That should help with your visibility."
Or something like that...

Hi there
You can do one of two things - either have them put a canonical tag on their page to your original content page, or have a link to your original content as the original source. I'd prefer the first option, or both.
Hope this helps! Good luck!

Do I need to add the actual language for meta tags and description for different languages? cited for duplicate content for different language
Hi, I am fairly new to SEO and this community so pardon my questions. We recently launched on our drupal site mandarin language version for the entire site. And when i do the crawl site, i get duplicate content for the pages that are in mandarin. Is this a problem or can i ignore this? Should i make different page titles for the different languages? Also, for the metatag and descriptions, would it better in the native language for google to search for? thanks in advance.

Duplicate content on product pages
Hi, We are considering the impact when you want to deliver content directly on the product pages. If the products were manufactured in a specific way and its the same process across 100 other products you might want to tell your readers about it. If you were to believe the product page was the best place to deliver this information for your readers then you could potentially be creating mass content duplication. Especially as the storytelling of the product could equate to 60% of the page content this could really flag as duplication. Our options would appear to be:1. Instead add the content as a link on each product page to one centralised URL and risk taking users away from the product page (not going to help with conversion rate or designers plans)2. Put the content behind some javascript which requires interaction hopefully deterring the search engine from crawling the content (doesn't fit the designers plans & users have to interact which is a big ask)3. Assign one product as a canonical and risk the other products not appearing in search for relevant searches4. Leave the copy as crawlable and risk being marked down or de-indexed for duplicated contentIts seems the search engines do not offer a way for us to serve this great content to our readers with out being at risk of going against guidelines or the search engines not being able to crawl it.How would you suggest a site should go about this for optimal results?

Duplicate Internal Content on E-Commerce Website
Hi, I find my e-commerce pharmacy website is full of little snippets of duplicate content. In particular: -delivery info widget repeated on all the product pages -product category information repeated product pages (e.g. all medicines belonging to a certain category of medicines have identical side effects and I also include a generic snippet of the condition the medicine treats) Do you think it will harm my rankings to do this?

Is it okay to copy and paste on page content into the meta description tag?
I have heard conflicting answers to this. I always figured that it was okay to selectively copy and paste on page content into the meta description tag.....especially if the onpage content is well written. How can it be duplicate content if it's pulling from the exact same page? Does anybody have any feedback from a credible source about this? Thanks.

Opinion on Duplicate Content Scenario
So there are 2 pest control companies owned by the same person - Sovereign and Southern. (The two companies serve different markets) They have two different website URLs, but the website code is actually all the same....the code is hosted in one place....it just uses an if/else structure with dynamic php which determines whether the user sees the Sovereign site or the Southern site....know what I am saying? Here are the two sites: www.sovereignpestcontrol.com and www.southernpestcontrol.com. This is a duplicate content SEO nightmare, right?

Finding Duplicate Content Spanning more than one Site?
Hi forum, SEOMoz's crawler identifies duplicate content within your own site, which is great. How can I compare my site to another site to see if they share "duplicate content?" Thanks!

Guest blogging and duplicate content
I have a guest blog prepared and several sites I can submit it to, would it be considered duplicate content if I submitted one guest blog post to multipul blogs? and if so this content is not on my site but is linking to it. What will google do? Lets say 5 blogs except the same content and post it up, I understand that the first blog to have it up will not be punished, what about the rest of the blogs? can they get punished for this duplicate content? can I get punished for having duplicate content linking to me?

I have a duplicate content problem
The website guy that made the website for my business Premier Martial Arts Austin disappeared and didn't set up that www. was to begin each URL, so I now have a duplicate content problem and don't want to be penalized for it. I tried to show in Webmaster tools the preferred setup but can't get it to OK that I'm the website owner. Any idea as what to do?
