Ranking over someone else who has your branded domain name

Hello!
I have a client who has been in business for a long time, but was very late to the game online. As a result, the branded domain for his business (for explanation purposes I'll call it "Houston Tan"*) was already taken when he decided he needed a website, however it was not being used.
He approached the company that owned "houstontan.com" and they refused to sell it to him. Not only that, they turned around and opened a company and developed the website using his trademarked company name as one word instead of two, "HoustonTan."
It was brought to court and the judge determined that since they created a new name by combining the two words, there was nothing that he could do.
Still having to create a website for his company, he chose the domain "HoustonSunTan.com." Not sure who was advising him on that one. So now he has a domain name with only a partial match to his company name.
As you would imagine, when you search Houston Tan, HoustonTan.com is number 1, 2 & 3, and HoustonSunTan.com is #4.
My question is, do you think it is even possible for his company to overtake the top spot of Google? Or have you ever come across a situation like this and if so what worked for you?
FYI:
Even though it says Houston, the company is a global company in over 500 cities (with one 800 number unfortunately), so local SEO strategies wouldn't necessarily apply.

Awesome, thanks for the encouragement Todd. That's what I've been thinking too, that heavy PR online and offline is what we need to push us up there. Just didn't know if someone had had this type of experience and came out on top.

Thanks John, that's very helpful. Technical audit has been done and we are working on blogger outreach and creating great original content. For our site, the PA is 35 and the DA is 24.3. For their site, PA is 50.1 and the DA is 40.1. We've got a bit of an uphill battle, but the good news is that they are not doing much so I'm hoping we can catch up & pass them. I will assume that for all other matters your site is equal or superior.  ie you have undertaken a technical audit https://moz.com/blog/technical-site-audit-for-2015. All good. Also would be ideal to know the DA & PA of the respective sites.
That said the key to success, (as the boys have indicated it is achievable) would be building great content, where the links to your site are your actual brand name (not your url). Â Also your link building strategy revolves around the brand name and not the url.
Could be a starting point, a strong and deliberate anchor text strategy.

I agree with Todd. You should have come up with strong points that makes google to relate your branded search query with your web. As your brand is the real one and been in business from many years, they are more experienced, understand the needs of audience and surely can supply ample amount of knowledge as compare to other company.
Though, it will take bit time and lots of effort but it's worth time investing.

It's definitely possible to win. The exact match domain/branded domain isn't that big of an issue IMO.
Do the basics:

Make sure your site is fast, device agnostic, and aligned well with target market wants and needs. Make sure the site is technically sound.

Do things that excite your customers and get them involved in your business. Work on building your brand and reputation both on and offline. This focus will lead you naturally into creating that "amazing over the top" type of content we read so much about. The best things just come from focusing on what would delight/entertain/help/connect, etc. with our customers.

Research well and align your site content with how users are searching and what they're after.
If your product is strong, you understand your audience well and how to connect with them, and you understand how to finesse the digital ecosystem to help the naturally cool things you're doing for the business leave good digital fingerprints, then you can def. win.

Implementing nofollow tag affect ranking
if a blog that is performing well on the first page at an average position of 4 for an informative term. Does RSS Feed help to rank better in Google?
Hello, I heard RSS Feed helps in ranking. However, I am not sure if I should enable RSS Feed or not. Whenever I publish an article on my site , I see that many other websites have leeched my Feed and get's the same article I written published with a nofollow backlink to my website article. The worst part is that my article doesn't appear in Google search, but the website which copied my article gets ranked in Google. Although the article gets index on google (checked by using site:website.com). Although some articles show up after 24 hours by ranking higher from the sites which copied my article. Any idea what should I do? Thank you

Duplicate ecommerce domains and canonical
Hi everybody! I'd like to discuss the SEO strategy I've thought regarding a client of mine and ask for help because it's a serious case of duplicate content. There is a main website (the business model one) where he compares the cost of medicines in several pharmacies, to show the cheapest shopping cart to the customer. But the shopping has to been made in another domain, within the selected pharmacie, because my country's law in Europe says that is compulsory to sell the medicines only on the pharmacy website. So my client has started to create domains, one for each pharmacy, where the differences between them are only some products, the business information of the pharmacy and the template's colour. But all of them shares the same product data base. My aim is to rank the comparing website (it contains all the products), not each pharmacy, so I've started to create different content for this one. Should I place rel=canonical in the pharmacies domains t the original one? For instance: www.pharmacie1.com >> www.originaltorank.com www.pharmacie2.com >> www.originaltorank.com www.pharmacie1.com/product-10 >> www.originaltorank.com/product-10 I've already discuss the possibilities to focus all the content in only one website, but it's compulsory to have different domains in order to sell medicines By the way, I can't redirect 301 because I need these websites exist for the same reason (the law) He is creating 1-3 new domains every week so obviously he has had a drop in his SEO traffic that I have to solve this fast. Do you think the canonical will be the best solution? I dont want to noindex these domains beacuse we're creating Google Local pages for each one in order to be found in their villages. New site pages are indexed but not ranking for anything
I just built this site for a client http://primedraftarchitecture.com. Â It went live 3 weeks ago and the pages are getting indexed as per Webmaster Tools. Â But I'm not seeing it rank for anything. We're adding blog articles regularly and used Moz Local for local links and have been building links in other local directories (probably about 15 so far). Usually I get some rankings, although very low, after just a week or two for new sites. Does anyone see anything glaring that may be causing a problem?

Domain authority decreased but rankings increased
Hello! I'm a bit confused. Â It seems the industry as a whole that my company operates in has taken a bash from the update a few days ago as all of the competitiors have taken a hit to their domain authority. Â What is confusing is that my websites rankings have increased as well. There has been a change to the robots.txt file in an effort to stop being crawled by SEMRush which is messing with my site stats but that is the only change. Thanks in advance, Ben

Will a new domain name help rankings
If I purchase a domain name that links to my site with the new domain name being keyword specific....will that help boost rankings in Google? Reason I ask is that a particular website always ranks higher than ours because of their domain name (keyword specific). They are currently not even "open" and they still manage to rank high. I checked for links with the seomoz tools but did not see any high links etc.. Thanks!

Brand Name URL Redirecting to Actual URL
So we have already built a site under a parent company's URL: parentcompany.com And now we have their branded product lines in directories: parentcompany.com/brand-name1, and parentcompany.com/brand-name2 We also own the actual URL Brand Name 1 (which is also the exact description of the product): brandname1.com We do not yet own the URL for Brand Name 2 (which is also the exact description of the product): brandname2.com. This is because a squatter is sitting on it and is asking $10,000+ for it. What we are trying to determine is how valuable these brand name URLs are since they will be redirecting and not the actual site's primary domain name. Anybody know how much of an effect owning those and redirecting has on ranking for those brand names that are also very descriptive of the products? Would we be smarter to spend $10,000 on adwords or 10,000 on the domain? Thanks!
