Outrank sb if PA and DA equal

Is it correct to say that if I have the same DA and PA I should outrank a competitor if I do my On-Page SEO right ?

Hi Marc,

I would, broadly, break down organic ranking factors as:

• Site / page strength (DA and PA)
• Site / page / brand relevance (keywords and branding)
• Historical ranking

Site / page / brand relevance

I assume you were already thinking about page relevance when you mentioned on-page SEO. But, Google looks at site and brand relevance as well. Google would rather rank a page about "Christmas tree decorations" from a site that's all about Christmas trees rather than a site that's about skiing. Google also looks at what other sites say about the ranking site when they link to or mention them. If links include the target keyword in the anchor text or in the surrounding text, Google will see relevance.

Historical ranking

I was once told by an experience link builder, you need about twice as many links as the page in the #1 spot in SERPs to take that ranking. If you're trying to shake things up, expect more work than the DA and PA imply. (But, if you're already ranking where you want to be, you're partially protected!)

This is obviously a HUGE over simplification of SEO, but I hope it helps give you an idea of what Google's looking for. Definitely check out other posts on Moz, and Moz's beginners guide to SEO if you want to dive in deeper.

Not really. As I was explaining here, apple.com ranks for "apple" not because they have better on page optimization than others. It's a lot about branding, anchor texts of inbound links and much more.
