Best practice for URL - Language/country
-
Hi,
We are planning on having our website localized into more languages. We already have an English and German version. The German version is currently a sub-domain:
www.example.com --> English version
de.example.com --> German version
Is this recommended? Or is it always better to have URLs with language prefixes such a:
Which is a better practice in terms of SEO?

Hi Peter,
Both really good answers to your questions above but maybe it would be good to give you some further pointing in the right direction. Perhaps you could answer the questions below and I can give you my personal opinion on which method would be best:
-
will you be putting an equal amount of marketing (content, PR, etc.) into the Spanish version for example compared with English?
-
are you able to offer fully localised service eg, Spanish customer service, Spanish sales team etc.?
-
is your company well-known globally?
It's important not to also forget that another option is using ccTLDs (eg, .co.uk, .com.au). These give the highest signal to search engines about the country being targeted and also importantly make you look more "local" which can do wonders for increasing conversion rate in countries where your company is not well-known.

I think that Tom gave you one of the best answers possible.
However I hope this helps your site structure should be very similar to one contained in the two URL's

WHERE TO ADD YOUR HREFLANG TAGS
You can add hreflang tags to your sitemaps, in the HTTP response headers, or on the page itself.
IN YOUR SITEMAPS
The best place to add hreflang is in your sitemap as including them in the headers or on the page adds weight to every single page request.
The following example will inform Google about the English version from the German version of the website:
<url> <loc>http://www.example.com/deutsch/</loc></url>
<xhtml:link< span=""> rel=”alternate” hreflang=”en” href=”http://www.example.com/english/” /> <xhtml:link < span="">rel=”alternate” hreflang=”de” href=”http://www.example.com/deutsch/” /></xhtml:link <></xhtml:link<>
This method would need to be repeated in full for every page on the site and for all the international websites.
IN YOUR HEADERS AND HTML
Hreflang tags can also be added to the HTTP header:
Link: http://www.example.com/english/; rel=”alternate”; hreflang=”en” Link: http://www.example.com/deutsch/; rel=”alternate”; hreflang=”de”
Or in the tag in the HTML:
http://www.example.com/english/” /> http://www.example.com/deutsch/
& because you will be creating a new site
https://www.candidsky.com/blog/the-seo-2015-guide-to-website-migration/
it would come down to your backlink profile if it were me I would use
Moz open site Explorer, Majestic, Ahrefs and Google Webmaster tools to determine whether or not I will be receiving a enough Backlinks for a subdomain or separate TLD otherwise I would use a subfolder and an extremely fast method of hosting the site Fastly is excellent or many other great methods as well.
Hope this helps,
Tom

Hi Peter
Both are viable options.
I'd highly recommend going through Aleyda Solis' international SEO posts here on the Moz blog. They can teach how to prepare for international SEO, how to approach site structure and how to generate relevant code and hreflang tags.
Here is her international SEO checklist
Here is her Hreflang blog post and generator tool
And 40 tools to help advance your international SEO
They're great reading and nothing that I'd be able to do add to, so I hope this helps!

WP URL issue - Concatenated URLs (LOTS of them)
WP is doing this somehow, and creating URLs for hundreds of pages that don't exist. HOW is this happening, and how do I stop It? I have many, many URLS like this: https://www.atouchofrust.com/terms-of-use/atouchofrust.com/vendor-news. Of note, atouchofrust.com/terms-of-use, and atouchofrust.com/vendor-news are both legit pages on the site. Why they are being concatenated is beyond my limited understanding of WP. Please, somebody, help. Cori

URL Structure
I'm going through the process of redesigning our website, and the URL structure was brought up. We currently have our URLs structured as domain.com/keyword. It seems that some people think setting your URLs up to look like: domain.com/directory/keyword makes more sense from a user's perspective, and from a search engine's perspective. With our directories labeled as services, solutions, clients - I see no value in adding directories as it dilutes the keyword and brings the keyword further away from the domain. Are there situations where adding a directory before the page in the URL makes sense? If anyone has data showing the difference between the two that'd be great! Thanks, Brian

301 for a Very Long URL
Hey gang, Thanks ahead of time for the help. I have a url somehow that is very very long: http://www.colbysphotography.com/wedding-caterers-knoxville-east-tennessee/Here is an extensive list of wedding venues in the Knoxville and East Tennessee region. If you find that any of these links are not working, that the venues are no longer in business, or have a suggestion for an additional venue (at no charge), please contact Colby. Colby's Photography works hard on keeping this list helpful. I have tried Yoast Premium on a wordpress site to redirect the url but it doesn't seem to keep. I've tried a few other redirect plugins with not help either. I would love some suggestions on this one! Colby

600+ 404 Errors: Best Practice for Redirects?
Hi All, I've just checked my GWMT profile for one of my client's sites and found that there are currently over 600 404 Error notifications! This is not that surprising given that we very recently redesigned and launched their new corporate site, which previously had a ton of "junk" legacy pages. I was wondering if it would work in terms of efficient SEO to simply apply a 301 redirect from the 404 page to our root to solve this issue? If not what would be a good solution? Thanks in advance for all your great advice!

Negative url name?
I have a new client who has the letters "BB" at the start of his url name, bbzautorepair.com. He was told by someone at Google Adwords that the letters "BB" in his url name could hurt him with Google rankings. Reason being that Google red flags anything or website to do with firearms, guns and ammunition. He was told that the letters "BB" could be mistaken or red flagged for "BB Gun". Seems a bit far fetched. Has anyone every heard of such a thing? Thanks

Company Name, My Name, A ficticious name that works for the company, or some other? Any Mozzers want to share thoughts or past strategies that have been successful?

URL Structure
Hi Guys, I'm in the process of creating a very exciting startup aimed at the baby industry. It's essentially a social commerce question where parents can shop for products, create lists of products and ask questions. The challenge I'm facing is how best to structure my URLs from an SEO standpoint. For example a common baby topic such as "feeding", can sit in all three categories: Shopping category aggregates all products related to feeding List category aggregates all lists related to feeding Question category aggregates all question and answers on feeding So for that keyword "feeding" you have 3 potential landing pages. What I was wondering is what is the most effective way of doing it? I was thinking of something along these lines: /shopping/feeding /baby_list/feeding /ask/feeding Would love to hear your points of view on this. Thanks! Walid

Duplicate Homepage: www.mysite.com/ and www.mysite.com/default.aspx
Hi, I have a question regarding our client's site, http://www.outsolve-hr.com/ on ASP.net. Google has indexed both www.outsolve-hr.com/ and www.outsolve-hr.com/default.aspx creating a duplicate content issue. We have added
Technical SEO | | flarson
to the default.aspx page. Now, because www.outsolve-hr.com/ and www.outsolve-hr.com/default.aspx are the same page on the actual backend the code is on the http://www.outsolve-hr.com/ when I view the code from the page loaded in a brower. Is this a problem? Will Google penalize the site for having the rel=canonical on the actual homepage...the canonical url. We cannot do a 301 redirect from www.outsolve-hr.com/default.aspx to www.outsolve-hr.com/ because this causes an infinite loop because on the backend they are the same page. So my question is two-fold: Will Google penalize the site for having the rel=canonical on the actual homepage...the canonical url. Is the rel="canonical" the best solution to fix the duplicate homepage issue on ASP. And lastly, if Google has not indexed duplicate pages, such as https://www.outsolve-hr.com/DEFAULT.aspx, is it a problem that they exist? Thanks in advance for your knowledge and assistance. Amy0
