Link juice from links that are not on the page?
-
Hello,
Thank you in advance for your help! I was doing research for backlinking opportunities by looking at competitor backlinks using Open Site Explorer and I ran into a puzzle.
When I do an Open Site Explorer search for http://whatsdavedoing.com/ I find that link equity is being passed to the site from a number of pages on the http://www.travelsupermarket.com/ blog with the anchor text "What's Dave Doing" When I go to these pages and do a source code search I cannot find this anchor text. When I do a google search with the following:
site:travelsupermarket.com "What's Dave Doing"
I find that there are tons of items that come back with a list of blogs in their description:
"Dec 5, 2013 - ... foXnoMad · Inside The Travel Lab · itravelnet · The Mad Traveler Blog · The Mad Traveler Online · Uncornered Market · What's Dave Doing?"
Where is this coming from? What is going on here? Is this a linking tactic that sites use to pass link juice to contributors without linking to them directly? Any help is much appreciated!
Thanks!

I didn't think to check the cache. Thank you!

Not sure if it's a spammy tactic. If you look at the cached version of these pages you'll notice that it contains a section on the right hand site: Travel blogs we like (http://webcache.googleusercontent.com/search?q=cache:GS8irLH9VKkJ:www.travelsupermarket.com/blog/learn-to-make-a-monkey-out-of-a-towel/towel-origami-109/+&cd=2&hl=nl&ct=clnk&gl=be) - with a link to "what's Dave doing"
Date of Cache for this example is Sept. 15th. It's quite possible that in the mean time Travelsupermarket decided to drop that section on the page. Normally these links should disappear in the coming months as these pages get crawled again.

What is a reasonable time frame to get to the 1st page
If my site is not in the first 50 results and the keywords are medium to highly competitive? I have just started adding to directories, planning out a blog, fixing seo mistakes, updating sitemaps etc. The 1st ranking competitor has external links in the tens of thousands whereas I have maybe a few hundred. I see a light at the end of the tunnel as competing sites in between me and the 1st place ranking competitor have external links only in the 1000-2000 level. We are an ecommerce site and want to be ready for our high season which is Nov-Jan.

How is this page ranking so high?
I have been using OSE, and I have come across a few sites that rank within the top 5 for VERY competitive keywords and seem to have NO inbound links to the page. Am I overlooking something? For example, Keyword: floor lamps Page: www.lampsplus.com/products/floor-lamps/

Competitor with over 100,000 links to duplicate copy ranks well, anyone know why?
One of our competitors has over 100,000 links on Yahoo site explorer, most of them are from pages on their site with duplicate content and they don't seem to have a focus on gaining backlinks, but the site still ranks really well. Can anyone think of a reason why this duplicate content hasn't been penalised by Google?

Can't Grasp Why Pages rank Higher?
The first result "Bankruptcy on IRS" is the search term. Why does the first url rank higher in google. The second one, the IRS.gov page beats them in PA, DA root domains links. The title meta has bankruptcy near the front. unclefed does have the IRS keyword in the title, but an I missing something here? What are the other factors, that are most obvious. Sure one can have bad links, and other negative criteria, but these are pretty decent sites that probably don't engage in much in seo, let alone bad SEO. Sure link text and mix of links can help, but am I missing something here? Actually what I think I really need IS A CHECKLIST OF WHAT TO CHECK IN WHAT ORDER WHEN COMPARING WHY ONE PAGE RANKS BETTER THAN ANOTHER. Appreciate all discussions. Thanks in advance. http://www.unclefed.com/AuthorsRow/Daily/Fwdcsea.html http://www.irs.gov/businesses/small/article/0,,id=98701,00.html
