301 from old site to new one , Should I point to home page or sub category page ?
-
Hey Seo Experts,
I have a small website ranking for few terms like cabinets sale, buy etc .
However what i have now decided is to launch a New website with more different products like living room furniture, wardrobes etc . Out of all these categories on new website Cabinets is one of the SubCategory .
Now I do not want to have 2 websites . So wanted to 301 from small cabinets website to newly created website.
Some of the doubts I have at the moment is ?
1 Should I REDIRECT 301 to sub category (i,e cabinets) which is purely related to Cabinets or Do a Redirect to HOME PAGE . As I also need more Authority to home page as well , as this is relatively new website ?
2 Second question related to this. If you have multiple sub domains does it divide the total authority & TF.Or it is just Ok to have multiple Sub domains if needed ?
Any advice appreciated !!
Thanks .

Hi,
To answer your questions briefly:
1. Redirects should be made on the basis of relevancy. 301's should be made from Home Page to Home Page, Category Page to Category Page, Product Page to Product Page, and so on. You can push your page authority to your Home Page if you really want to, but you will likely see a loss in rankings for the keywords you are targeting. Better to retain that authority for your cabinet keywords and continue ranking with the new site structure while building up the other areas, products and categories. Redirecting to the Home Page will spread your current Authority thin across all aspects of your website, which will limit your rankings across the board.
2. Multiple sub domains will divide the authority of your website. If you can avoid this, do so. It is better to create multiple categories for different products on a single domain, and create relevant link profiles to each category than to create sub domains for each category or product you are providing. If needed, you can create sub domains for each category, but it is a very inefficient and problematic scenario for SEO. Set up your new site to have multiple categories in your Menu, create links to each category page, and only conduct 301 redirects to each category from a relevant category on the old website.
Hope this helps - let me know if you have further questions.
All the best,
Rob

Hi, i think that you have to make a 301 redirection to the specific category and not to the homepage, because the traffic that arrives to the first site is waiting particular content and it would increase the user experience. I would make a section-to-section redirect when it is possible, and all the others redirect to the homepage. In this case prioritize the traffic will make you better on SEO.
2. Is OK to use multiple sub domains if it is really needed, the question is why you need it ? It isn't good have different categories on different subdomains..

Using copy from a current site on a new one
I have a client who is closing down his local business because he'smoving to another state. When he gets there he will launch a new website. On his current website, he put in a lot of work and has a ton of good copy, including blog posts that have helped gain him excellent rankings. He's asking me if he can use that copy on his new site and get original author credit for that, like he did on his current site. Can he use the same copy from his current website on his new websitewithout any problems — and get original author credit for it?Would it be best to shut down the old site or to 301 all of the pages beingmoved to the new corresponding pages? If 301's are the way to go, how long should he leave those in place? Thanks!Kirk

Redirecting Pages During Site Migration
Hi everyone, We are changing a website's domain name. The site architecture will stay the same, but we are renaming some pages. How do we treat redirects? I read this on Search Engine Land: The ideal way to set up your redirects is with a regex expression in the .htaccess file of your old site. The regex expression should simply swap out your domain name, or swap out HTTP for HTTPS if you are doing an SSL migration. For any pages where this isn’t possible, you will need to set up an individual redirect. Make sure this doesn’t create any conflicts with your regex and that it doesn’t produce any redirect chains. Does the above mean we are able to set up a domain redirect on the regex for pages that we are not renaming and then have individual 1:1 redirects for renamed pages in the same .htaccess file? So have both? This will not conflict with the regex rule?

Fresh page versus old page climbing up the rankings.
Hello, I have noticed that if publishe a webpage that google has never seen it ranks right away and usually in a descend position to start with (not great but descend). Usually top 30 to 50 and then over the months it slowly climbs up the rankings. However, if my page has been existing for let's say 3 years and I make changes to it, it takes much longer to climb up the rankings Has someone noticed that too ? and why is that ?

What are best page titles for sub-folders or sub-directories? Same as website?
Hi all, We always mention "brand & keyword" in every page title along with topic in the website, like "Topic | vertigo tiles". Let's say there is a sub-directory with hundreds of pages...what will be the best page title practice in mentioning "brand & keyword" across all pages of sub-directory to benefit in-terms if SEO? Can we add "vertigo tiles" to all pages of sub-directory? Or we must not give same phrase? Thanks,

301 Externally Linked, But Non-Producing Pages, To Productive Pages Needing Links?
I'm working on a site that has some non-productive pages without much of an upside potential, but that are linked-to externally. The site also has some productive pages, light in external links, in a somewhat related topic. What do you think of 301ing the non-productive pages with links to the productive pages without links in order to give them more external link love? Would it make much of a difference? Thanks... Bought a site with an old domain where to start?
Hi, I recently purchased the site www.forexnews.com. The domain is more than 10 years old and used to have a ton of content and traffic. A couple of years ago it was purchased by another firm who took down all the old content and made it into a news aggregation site. I am going to try and build the traffic back up by adding back original content and leveraging the domain authority that the site has retained. Besides doing some keyword research, building links, and writing original content is there any advice out there that the community can give me on what else to start with? Any resources that you can point me to which talk about this type of thing would also be appreciated. Thanks Dave

301 Redirect pages with .aspx extension
I want 301 redirect all a website's subpages with a .aspx extension to a page without the .aspx etension. Example: I want to 301 redirect www.website.com/services.aspx to www.website.com/services Right now if you do not include .aspx on the end of every URL it gives a 404 error. I have used the web.config file to 301 redirect non-www to www and /default.aspx to /. I am not extremely familiar with IIS 7.0 or web.config, so any help would be great. Thanks.

E-commerce Adding New Content - Blog vs New Page
I have an ecommerce site (www.brick-anew.com) focused on Fireplace products and we also have a separate blog (fireplacedecorating.com) focused on fireplace decorating. My ecommerce site needs new content, pages, internal links, etc... for more Google love, attention, and rankings. My question is this: Should I add a blog to the ecommerce site for creating new content or should I just add and create new pages? I have lots of ideas for relevant new content related to fireplaces. Are there any SEO benefits to a blog over new static pages? Thanks! SAM
