Publication Date, Modification Date - (Proper) Usage and Effect
-
Hi,
First of all: I think apart from QDF results, effects of this are rather small and trumped by such things as the actual content and value a page offered. Nevertheless I got to wondering how the publication date and modification date are used ... effectively and correctly.
Fact: Google displays the publication date on SERPS (if it is given via schema or through the CMS or in any other form). This also applies if you have a date of last modification, for example via schema.org/dateModified - regardless of the extent of changes.
Google only considers the publication date. Google also uses it as an indicator for "freshness". There are quite a few articles on that out there, ex: http://www.kevinmuldoon.com/change-date-article-boost-seo/ and http://www.viperchill.com/new-seo/Q1: In my opinion, faking the publication date is at the very least a darkish grey area which nonetheless seems to still work. Would you agree?
Q2: Would you see it as legitimate to (at some point after thoroughly reworking one page) update the publication date to the date of republication?
Case in point: I have a page with book reviews. These reviews do not really go stale - much like recipes; tastes may change a bit, but essentially it stays the same. I find it somewhat irking to see a 10 year old date there - even if I maybe have restructured and rewritten, maybe even completely redone a review...
But apart from the question of whether to ever "update" your publication date. I started pondering when it was proper to change the modification date (especially as it seems to have little effect apart from serving as date for last changes in headers, caches etc.)?
For example, content changes when
- Manually changing text
- a visitor leaves a comment
- a visitor gives a book/article/page a rating
- a visitor gives a book a rating and this rating is part of another entity's aggregate rating
Q: Which of these events would warrant an update of the last modification? ratings and aggregate ratings typically only change single numbers (vote count and sums/averages); yet there is [legitimate] change and it is utilised in SERPS (review stars).
I am still hesitant.
My answers would be: Changing the publication date might be valid in case of a MAJOR overhaul with new or lots of extra content - when, for example you could publish the same article again in another issue of the same print magazine the article has been published in before; and all of those changes warrant an update of the last modification, at least as it is currently used, i.e. only to show when change has happened with any real influence.
Personally I'd wish for lastModified carrying more weight compared to pubDate AND especially for more google-side checks if actual change has happened. (To be ignored in case of small things like legitimately switching a sentence or correcting a typo; to be penalised if changed when nothing really changes; to honour when real change happens)
Looking forward on your opinions for dating content - and of course on your hints what I am forgetting.

The dating of content has gotten a lot of play of late, in large part because of a post that appeared on the Moz blog: https://moz.com/blog/case-study-can-you-fake-blog-post-freshness-
Despite the dissenting opinions on all sides, this much appears to find consensus: Update your content and the content's date when you have new, valuable information available to provide, and only then.
Otherwise the results are likely to be short-term and not very worthwhile.

Do quotation marks in content effect SERPs?
Some of my art object products have words and phrases engraved on them. The words relate to the images on the product. In the product descriptions, I have been putting quotes around the entire list. Would I get better long tail results if I didn't use the quotation marks? In other words, do the quotes make everything between them an exact match phrase? For example:

Does anyone know how I can see the original date of a link to my website?
Hello community, I'm trying to find the oldest links to my website/places that have referenced my company. By old, I'm looking for anything 2008 or older. I have access to a bunch of backlink tools, but they all log stuff based on when they discovered it, and we didn't begin using the tools until June 2013. I'm hoping there's some tool or some easy trick where I can quickly sort my links based on original date they linked to travelexinsurance.com. Thanks, Patrick

I would like to know if changing the permalink effects PA of the page?
Like lets say abc.com/abc-xyz.. I change that to abc.com/xyz-abc-hij An established page, having some links to the page(inbound and outbound both). If I change the permalink of that page, will that effect the PA of the page? All the links to the older permalink will be useless or they will link with the new permalink?

Looking for an e-commerce CMS that can deal properly with facets and filters
Hi! One of my clients has an online shop built on a custom platform. Following my on-page audit, I found multiple issues with the faceted & filtered navigation. After doing some research, I've developed a good site architecture based both on keyword targeting and on user experience. Since the client's platform is custom and he is no longer in contact with the original webmaster, I'm looking to recommend an e-commerce CMS that would fix the issues he has and allow for proper navigation using facets + filters. I'll give you an idea of how I've envisioned the new site architecture (with a random example): The website has 3 main categories: Jackets Shoes Pants These categories are completely separated, no products exist in more than one category. Let's take the Shoes category. It has the following facets (these are like subcategories, in the form of links, indexable by the search engines): By Brand: Brand 1 Brand 2 Brand 3 By Genre Men Women Unisex By Type Running Flip-Flops Boots Each product of the Shoes category will belong to one of each facets (so you can have a product that belongs to Brand 1, for Women, of the "boots" type). Now, each of these facets also display filters depending on the facet itself. These are non-indexable, and preferably done through AJAX. For example, if I select Shoes -> Men I get a list of filters that can also include options from the other facets (so I'll have filters for "Size", but also for "Brand" and "Type"). When I select Shoes -> Boots I won't have the "Type" filter anymore (or I can have it pre-selected I guess), but I will have the "Size" and "Brand" filters. So, what I am looking for is for a CMS that can allow product attributes (like "Type", "Genre" or "Brand") to be used both as facet categories as well as filters. The closest live example I could find is ASOS, where you can search products by Brand (facet) and have the refined afterwards by Type (filter) or you can search products by Type (facet) and refine them by Brand (filter). So, any idea of an e-commerce CMS that would allow me to do the above (bonus points if it also allows entering descriptions for facets, similar to what ASOS does)? Thanks!

Dates in URL's
I have an issue of duplicate content errors and duplicate page titles which is penalising my site. This has arisen because a number of URLs are suffixed by date(s) and have been spidered . In principle I do not want any url with a suffixed date to be spidered. Eg:- www.carbisbayholidays.co.uk/carbis-bay/houses-in-carbis-bay/seaspray.htm/06_07_13/13_07_13 http://www.carbisbayholidays.co.uk/carbis-bay/houses-in-carbis-bay/seaspray.htm/20_07_13/27_07_13 Only this URL should be spidered:- http://www.carbisbayholidays.co.uk/carbis-bay/houses-in-carbis-bay/seaspray.htm I have over 10,000 of these duplicates and firstly wish to remove them on block from Google ( not one by one ) and secondly wish to amend my robots.txt file so the URL's are not spidered. I do not know the format for either. Can anyone help please.

Duplicate Content- Best Practise Usage of the canonical url
Canonical urls stop self competition - from duplicate content. So instead of a 2 pages with a rank of 5 out of 10, it is one page with a rank of 7 out of 10.
On-Page Optimization | | WMA
However what disadvantages come from using canonical urls. For example am I excluding some products like green widet, blue widget. I have a customer with 2 e-commerce websites(selling different manufacturers of a type jewellery). Both websites have massive duplicate content issues.
It is a hosted CMS system with very little SEO functionality, no plugins etc. The crawling report- comes back with 1000 of pages that are duplicates. It seems that almost every page on the website has a duplicate partner or more. The problem starts in that they have 2 categorys for each product type, instead of one category for each product type.
A wholesale category and a small pack category. So I have considered using a canonical url or de-optimizing the small pack category as I believe it receives less traffic than the whole category. On the original website I tried de- optimizing one of the pages that gets less traffic. I did this by changing the order of the meta title(keyword at the back, not front- by using small to start of with). I also removed content from the page. This helped a bit. Or I was thinking about just using a canonical url on the page that gets less traffic.
However what are the implications of this? What happens if some one searches for "small packs" of the product- will this no longer be indexed as a page. The next problem I have is the other 1000s of pages that are showing as duplicates. These are all the different products within the categories. The CMS does not have a front office that allows for canonical urls to be inserted. Instead it would have to be done going into the html of the pages. This would take ages. Another issue is that these product pages are not actually duplicate, but I think it is because they have such little content- that the rodger(seo moz crawler, and probably googles one too) cant tell the difference.
Also even if I did use the canonical url - what happened if people searched for the product by attributes(the variations of each product type)- like blue widget, black widget, brown widget. Would these all be excluded from Googles index.
On the one hand I want to get rid of the duplicate content, but I also want to have these pages included in the search. Perhaps I am taking too idealistic approach- trying to optimize a website for too many keywords. Should I just focus on the category keywords, and forget about product variations. Perhaps I look into Google Analytics, to determine the top landing pages, and which ones should be applied with a canonical. Also this website(hosted CMS) seems to have more duplicate content issues than I have seen with other e-commerce sites that I have applied SEO MOZ to On final related question. The first website has 2 landing pages- I think this is a techical issue. For example www.test.com and www.test.com/index. I realise I should use a canonical url on the page that gets less traffic. How do I determine this? (or should I just use the SEO MOZ Page rank tool?)0 -
Has anyone with a high number of home page tiles been effected by the panda/farmer update?
One of the sites I'm working on seems to have dropped a few spots in rankings. It has numerous home page tiles, but they are not really advertising; just links to different sections on the site. Does anyone think that might be a factor in the rankings drop?
