'Results pages'
-
Hey there,
I have a website that my client is update it every day with some 'results' for example - see attached image.
What is the best way to avoid 7 duplicate content pages every day? -
Hi John! Did Don's response help?
I have to say, I'm also curious as to why it's necessary to have 7 variations of these pages.
-
Hello John,
If I understood correctly, you have 7 variations of a page that gets updated daily. However the variations are only distinct in that they have different numbers and dates.
So my first question, is this an A&B test? Meaning is your client trying to figure out which one of the 7 pages is the best? If that is the case then the first variation should be normal with each other variation being "No Index". Here is some help on A&B testing here on Moz. Link Of course once you find the "best" version then you use that and stop using the other variations.
If this is not a test then I have to question the purpose of having 7 variations of the same page with the same text. This is the reason that there are duplicate content penalties. People do not want to read the same page 7 different ways, Google realized this awhile ago and started ignoring or penalizing sites that were doing exactly this. What Google wants is what people want and that is actual content that is helpful, insightful, and well written. If your client wants to auto generate and butcher a dictionary on 7 different pages then let them, I wouldn't want to be part of it.
That may sound harsh, but the point is there is no viable reason I know of outside of A&B testing that would warrant creating multiple versions of a page. In the case of testing you simply add the no-index tag to the page and capture the metrics to find the best version. Once that is accomplished you have your page. Everything outside of that is black hat search engine manipulation and receives a well deserved frown.
My thoughts,
Don

Content hidden behind a 'read all/more..' etc etc button
Hi Anyone know latest thinking re 'hidden content' such as body copy behind a 'read more' type button/link in light of John Muellers comments toward end of last year (that they discount hidden copy etc) & follow up posts on Search Engine Round Table & Moz etc etc ? Lots of people were testing it and finding such content was still being crawled & indexed so presumed not a big deal after all but if Google said they discount it surely we now want to reveal/unhide such body copy if it contains text important to the pages seo efforts. Do you think it could be the case that G is still crawling & indexing such content BUT any contribution that copy may have had to the pages seo efforts is now lost if hidden. So to get its contribution to SEO back one needs to reveal it, have fully displayed ? OR no need to worry and can keep such copy behind a 'read more' button/link ? All Best Dan

Will pushing a visitor to a conversion page hosted on a 3rd-party domain hurt the landing page ranking
Had an interesting question from a client. The client has a page that is optimized for a specific term. The goal of the page is to push users to sign-up for a trial. The trial registration (conversion) page is hosted by a third-party. Will pushing users to the conversion page cannibalize the SEO authority of the landing page. My reflexive answer is to say no, but now am not so sure.

3 keywords optomize for home page. Should I create page with thoses keywords or leave it like this?
My online store home page, Furnace Filters Canada has 3 keywords with good ranking in google.ca keywords: ''furnace filters canada'' rank #1 position in google.ca keywords: ''furnace filters'' and ''furnace filter'' are on 5 or 6th position of page 1 in google.ca Those keywords are bringing most of the traffic to our site. To achieve this ranking, I had to use the On-Page Keyword Optimization, tool from seoMoz Questions: It is possible for me to create a page with the URL: https://www.furnacefilterscanada.com/Furnace-Filters or https://www.furnacefilterscanada.com/Furnace-Filter Can this improve my ranking with keywords like, ''furnace filters'' and ''furnace filter''? Is this a waist of time? If I decide to create a new page for optimization with, do I have to create one for singular and another one for plural? Creating a new page also mean removing, '' Furnace Filter'' in the home page title, until the new pages are index, I'm afraid to loss that 5th position in Google. Should I leave the home page title like it is now, '' Furnace Filter - Furnace Filters Canada - Online Shopping Store NOTE: we only do business in Canada, that is why Google.ca is more important to us Thank you, Jean Nichols

Why is this page ranking highest?
I've just used Open Site Explorer to compare some sites whose (unpaid) Google ranking I aspire to. They all have higher authority than my site, but the top ranking site out of the 3 I've looked at has the lowest Page Authority, hardly and links (when the others have hundreds), lowest page rank and lowest page trust. In fact, when you look at the top ranking page (ranks #1), it does not even have the search term in it as a complete phrase. One thing I do notice is that it does have 100,000s of linking root domains from one linking root domain. So how can it rank number one on Google?

Getting page cached
I am reworking some content that is deep in my site. What is the best way for google to find it? Some of the pages were cached about 3 weeks ago, but I don't want to wait too long to get them to see the new content (and links).
