Which is more valuable?

When building links, what would you say is more valuable in boosting your google rankings when you, for example, are currently on pages 2 and 3 for keywords, have a DA of 18, and have a few relevant links from niche directories etc...?
1 irrelevant linking root domain with a DA of 80 **or **8 relevant linking root domains with a DA of 10 each.
There is no right answer (I think :-)), but I would like to see how different people view relevancy, and quantity vs. quality.
Also, would you answer differently for a site that is well established (DA= 30-40) with a number of both relevant, irrelevant, high DA, and low DA linking domains.

Hi Trevor,
Math in linkbuilding is complicated.
I believe that you should not get attached to any idea like: "Only high PA links" or "As many links as possible". It should be a mix of those ideas. The linkbuilding target should always be "diversificate", make it look natural. Although we know that linkbuilding isn´t always natural.
I prefer getting some high authority links, some low athority links, some medium authority.. all those separated in time, some days/weeks in between. "make it look natural"
Never forget to mix anchors, exact URL, dofollow, noFollow and irrational anchors (sourche, click here, more info)
Hope this is useful for you

Hi Trevor,
Unfortunately, with link building, the math isn't that simple. The litmus test you should use is to ask yourself "Would another person find this link useful?". If the answer is yes, then the link will be beneficial. If the answer is no, it means the link isn't worth your time and would mislead or frustrate people.

Can Foreign Language Backlinks Be Valuable?
I've done a lot of searching on this subject, but I keep seeing conflicting answers. Are backlinks from foreign language websites valuable? For example, a travel website in English picks up a couple backlinks in Indonesian language (and other languages) from foreign sites that have a DA of 60-70 or higher. The topic is partially related, but the language is totally different. Would those links still be valuable for the English website's DA? Has this ever been answered conclusively? Thanks

Subdomain links vs root domain links? Are the less valuable?
I am determining the value of links we get. Is a link on a subdomain less valuable vs one on the root domain? How less valuable would you consider a subdomain link? For example blog.site.com vs site.com/blog What other metrics would you take into consideration for the value of a subdomain link?

WordPress Sidebar Links: Valuable or Not?
Wondering what people's thoughts are on whether to keep WordPress sidebar links? For example I write a personal blog and usually write about tech related things, but have a sidebar link with keyword anchor text pointing to my clothing based website - completely unrelated to the content on my blog. As it's a sidebar link, it shows up for every page on the site (easily thousands due to all posts having a page, tags, categories etc). Are those valuable links to keep? There's an argument that all links are good links. Should I change them to have anchor text of the brand name rather than the keyword?

Are high quality press release syndication site links valuable?
Suppose your press release got picked up by high authority sites like Yahoo, Morningstar, PaidContent.org, etc. But they republished the press release and kept the links. Do these links pass any value since the sites are just republishing the press release?

Advice on buying a domain name for a valuable link
There is an expired blog which scores well for a search term I'm interested in. I'd like to know if people think it's a good idea to buy it to get a link essentially? Also, if I buy the domain and the content is wiped, does anyone have any tips on what I should do in regards to content to maintain the domains value? I don't generally look to buy domains for links but on this occasion it could be worth the effort and expense.

Why is Business.com a valuable link when they are all nofollow?
Earlier today, I received a $50 off coupon for a Business.com listing. Back when I was really learning about directories, lots of people recommended getting one of these listings because editors actually review it to make sure the website linked is of good quality. Even the SEOmoz Directory Guide regards it as a good link. Now, it seems like every outbound link from Business.com has a 'nofollow' tag right when they link to the target website. Furthermore, the actual business listing doesn't even link to the website! Let me take, for example, web design companies: http://www.business.com/internet/web-design/ This directory has tons of 'nofollow' links. On top of that, if you take any of the companies listed and do a search for their business page, the business page doesn't even have a link to their website! That doesn't exactly seem like it's worth $300 a year... Any chance there is something I'm missing here? I'm not fully understanding this, it seems.

Can indirect linking be valuable?
I have a client who is using a SEO company (Hubshout, delete name if necessary) to boost traffic to their website. They are doing this by publishing articles and submitting them to article directories, then they use their own sites/blogs (which are valueless, PR and MozRank of zero) to point to these articles and they say that this helps boost there rankings. How? They are not linking to the clients websites, creating artificial links from their own websites to article directories instead of the clients website. Are they trying to boost the value of the article or trying to boost their own websites? How does this help out the client? It is similar to three way linking but is not.
