Can multiple geotargeting hreflang tags be set in one URL? International SEO question
-
Hi All,
I have a question please.
If i target www.onedirect.co.nl/en/ in English for Holland, Belgium and Luxembourg, are the tags below correct?
English for Holland, Belgium and Luxembourg:
http://www.example.co.nl/en/" hreflang="en-nl" />
http://www.example.co.nl/en/" hreflang="en-be" />
http://www.example.co.nl/en/" hreflang="en-lu" />
AND Targeting Holland and Belgium in Dutch:
Pour la page www.onedirect.co.nl on peut inclure ce tag:
http://www.example.co.nl" hreflang="nl-nl" />
http://www.example.co.nl" hreflang="nl-be" />
thanks a lot for your help!

Hi,
Thanks a lot for your help. I will then use one hreflang per URL.
Cheers,

loganr is right. There is no point in repeating the same URL for multiple English variants. Just use "en" and "nl" and 1 Hreflang entry per URL.
Another thing you could do is create multiple URLs for each of your variants. e.g. example.co.uk for en-GB, example.be for en-BE and so on. But unless you have really customized the content for each of these variants to be truly geography-specific, you are better off consolidating everything under 1 English URL. Otherwise Google will think you've got duplicate content. See example.

With your .co.nl TLD, it's unlikely that you'd get much (if any) visibility in U.S. Google.
You could also do the following:
- Specify your primary country in Search Console
- Use sitemaps to identify targeted countries: https://support.google.com/webmasters/answer/2620865?hl=en

Hi,
Thank you for your answer, however i do not want to market the products to the US for instance, how can i do this?
Thanks,
-
Hi,
In this instance, since you're targeting multiple countries but the same language, it's acceptable to only specify the language in the hreflang tag, and leave the country out. For example:

If I have two brands and I market one in English (BrandA.com) and one in Spanish (BrandB.com), and the websites are identical but in different languages, would that have a negative impact on SEO due to duplicate content?
I have a client who wants a website in Spanish and one in English. Typically we would use a multi-language plugin for a single site (brandA.com/en or /es), but this client markets to their Spanish-speaking constituents under a different brand. So I am wondering if we have BrandA.com in English, and the exact same content in Spanish at BrandB.com if there will be negative SEO implications and/or if it will be recognized as duplicate content by search engines?

How can a website have multiple pages of duplicate content - still rank?
Can you have a website with multiple pages of the exact same copy, (being different locations of a franchise business), and still be able to rank for each individual franchise? Is that possible?

Internal links question
I've read that Google frowns upon large numbers of internal links. We're building a site that helps users browse a list of shows via dozens of genres. If the genres are expose, say, as a pulldown menu as opposed to a list of static links, and selecting the pulldown option filters the list of shows, would those genres count against our internal links count?

Can I redirect duplicate blogs to give credit to one?
I have two sites that have no duplicate content (yet). One ranks better than the other but has a crappy hyphenated domain name (Domain A), and the other one is the "brand site" with a better domain name (Domain B). I'm creating a blog with technical articles and corresponding videos. I want the videos to refer to the better domain name (Domain B) because I can't see referring people to a hyphenated domain (it would sound horrible). But, the hyphenated domain has a better chance of improving it's rankings (long story why). Can I duplicate the content and just use a canonical tag on Domain B to give the credit to Domain A? If I do that, is it done on each post? Or the blog's main page? What I think would happen is any links to Domain B would pass the juice to Domain A. Is that correct? I know Canonical's are tricky and I don't want to screw this up, so I'd greatly appreciate some advice from the experienced people on here. Thank you.

Multiple sitemaps for one site?
Excuse my sitemap ignorance here. I've got a site and it's got a blog in a sub-folder. The blog gets updated frequently, the main site does not. Is it best to; a) Have 2 sitemaps.. one in the root and one in the /blog folder. b) Have 1 sitemap that is regularly updated The reason being, I know there's various plugins that create blog sitemaps on the fly, so that would be much easier than updating the main sitemap every time a change was made. If the answer is 2 sitemaps; Would you stop the root sitemap from detailing the contents of the blog folder or just update it every so often with the contents of the blog folder?

One site for multiple regions with a twist?
Hi there. I'm hoping to tap into the collective wisdom of this great community. I've just become involved in a business that spans two countries Australia and New Zealand. Currently we have one site in Australia "AAAA.com.au" and a similar site in New Zealand which is a joint venture with another company so for some reason they chose to merge the names to get "BBAAAA.co.nz". The Australian site is hosted in Australia and ranks #1 for targeted keywords in a competitive industry. The New Zealand site is hosted in NZ and has been live for nearly 2 years but ranks very poorly with targeted keywords i.e. not in the top 50! The content on sites is similar but not the same and phone numbers and location details are different etc. The NZ site has not been link building which is likely the main issue. What I want to do is now change the BBAAAA.co.nz site to AAAA.co.nz (the other company has agreed the name change is warranted) and service New Zealand from Australia using our well performing site. Any thoughts on the best way to achieve this to maximise the good ranking of the Australian site? The Australian site has a lot of back links from a range of sites. I've taken into account the following info at Google but I'm still stuck for the best answer given our tricky situation. http://www.google.com/support/webmasters/bin/answer.py?answer=182192#2 Would love to hear your thoughts on how to approach this one. Cheers in advance.
