New Yoast SEO Wordpress Plugin - Using Passive Voice In Copy?
-
Hi all, we wondered if anyone is using the updated version of Yoast's SEO plugin for Wordpress?
We use it on our Woocommerce website (along with the Woocommerce extension) and the latest version seems to have focussed on moving the writing style on. To avoid using passive voice.
https://kb.yoast.com/kb/passive-voice/
We're struggling a bit to get this right, it seems to be quite a change to our current style...so we're wondering if anyone else has been looking at this and feeling like they are getting it right? Or if anyone has any resources good for helping to write more in this way?
How important do people think this is?
Many thanks,
James & Ally

In terms of Search Engine Optimisation, I haven't seen any categorical proof that active or passive tone will make a big difference.
When it comes to writing style, the use of an active voice is encouraged in journalism, copywriting etc. It's much more effective at encouraging users to take action (i.e. buying a product for example).
Whether or not that should be included in the Yoast plugin depends on personal preference. Personally I use the comprehension scores and anything grammatical as a rough guide, but nothing more than that. Especially when WP still insists on American spelling checks, and most of the subjects I write about tend to use fairly niche technical terms which will be flagged up every time they appear as a spelling mistake, and as potentially too complex for everyone.
I'd say it's always worth testing on a couple of products if you're unsure. Personally I would try and phrase as much as possible in an active voice anyway (Especially any Call To Action), but if, for example, I wanted to echo Wikipedia or a scholarly academic article, I might choose to go more passive...
Any automated checker will only ever be a reasonable guide - and I say that as a big fan of the Yoast plugin - there should always be human judgement applied to whatever is recommended...

Hi Diamond Dog, yes...we feel like we're with you really. How important is trying not to write in passive voice really?
We're going to have a play with putting the effort into doing it for a few products and we can see what the effect it has.

Wait wha..
As long of content makes sense and isn't written for fooling the bot, isn't that sufficient? We are now being told how to write? I dunno, sometimes.. it feels things are being taken too far.
I keep going back to the analogy of restaurants for SEO. Imagine a page is the dish and this dish can be presented in many ways and different individuals might prepare it in different ways, but all ingredients must be used. Some might put in more pepper and some won't..
The point is, what gets the restaurant and its food noticed isn't just the mechanical approach you took to making the recipe. It's much more, the presentation, the taste, the experience..and that's what users should focus all of their time on.
I dunno, maybe i'm thinking too much. Hey, a discussion is a discussion right?

SEO issues? New functionality added to website and now hash (in URL) - fragments
Hi All! We have new nice functionality on website, but now i doubt if we will have SEO issues. Duplicate content and if google is able to spider our website. See: http://www.allesvoorbbq.nl/boretti-da-vinci-nero.html#608=1370

With the new functionality we can switch between colors of the models (black / white / red / yellow).
When you switch with Ajax the content of other models is fetched without refreshing the page. (so the url initial part of url stays the same (for initial model) only part behind # changes. The other models are also accessible by there own url, like the red one: http://www.allesvoorbbq.nl/boretti-da-vinci-rosso.html#608=1372 So far so good. But now the questions: 1. We use to have url like /boretti-da-vinci-nero.html - also our canonical is that way But now if we access that url our system is adding automatically the #123-123 to the url to indicate which model(color) is shown. Is this hurting SEO or confusing google? Because it seems that the clean url is not accessible anymore? (it adds now #123-123) 2. Should we add some tags around the different types (colors) to prevent google from indexing that part of website? Every info would be very helpfull! We do not want to lose our nice rankings thanks to MOZ! Thanks all!

Domain Forwarding for SEO
Hey guys, I recently created a new website for a client who was ranking #1 for the term "jupiter obgyn" but they have now dropped down to #4. This happened because their old home page was at www. instead of just jupiterobgyn.com. When you type in the www. version, it does take you to the root domain but it's not carrying the old PA! The www. version of the page had a 22 PA and the new root domain hosted page is a 1. How can I fix it so that "link juice" carries over? Is this something i need to do in 1and1 (their web host) or within Wordpress? Thanks!!!

Link masking in WordPress
in Wordpress, I want to block Google from crawling my site using the primary navigation. I want to use anchor text links in the body and custom menus in the sidebar to make maximum benefit of the "first link counts" rule. In short, I want to obfuscate all of the links in my primary navigation without using the dreaded nofollow. I do not want to block other links to the pages - body text, custom menus, etc. . This would be site wide. I'd rather not use Ajax or any type of programming unless it's part of a plugin. Can anyone make a simple, Google-friendly suggestion?

Should I change wordpress urls?
Should I change my wordpress permalinks to include the keyword? For examples at the minute my url is http://www.musicliveuk.com/home/wedding-singer. Is it better to be http://www.musicliveuk.com/live-bands/wedding-singer. 'home' is not relevant so surely 'live-bands' would be better? If I change the urls won't I lose 'link juice' as external links will all point to a url that no longer exists? Or will wordpress automatically redirect the old url to the new one? Finally, if I should change the url as described how do I do it on wordpress? I can only see how to edit the last bit of the url and not the middle bit.

US version of our existing website - SEO copy duplication?
Hi, We are planning to launch a dedicated US version of our existing e-commerce website. The US version will sit on a separate domain and will be completely standalone to our existing website. My question is, since a lot of the pages are product pages and will exist on each respective site. Does the copy have to be completely re-written (or just slightly) on the new US site in order to avoid any SEO duplicate copy issues with the existing site? Any advice would be much appreciated

Joomla Plugins for SEO
Any input on which Joomla plugins could help us to facilitate the SEO on a client's site? Wordpress has some simple all-in-ones but we're not as familiar with Joomla and it doesn't look like that's the case. Thanks!
