Backlink Building - is it worth it?
-
I've got a UK-based site with about 10,000 backlinks, according to majestic, and just 4 according to Open Site Explorer? Confusing! Rivals tend to have more - 28,000 in the case of our nearest competitors.
So I'm not sure the best way to go about building backlinks? Or if it's worth actively seeking to build them?
The index page of the site has a Moz PA of 45 (DA = 35) and I'm looking for any ways to increase these - need to get the DA up to 73 to compete with largest rivals.
One of our main rivals has about 60 .edu links - would be great to emulate that, but I'm also not sure how you go about this? i.e. when you spot a good backlink someone else has, how would you begin the process of also getting that link?
-
Some people write content that explains how to select the product, how to maintain it, demonstrations of how to use it. These are great for attracting links. DIY sites are the best examples of this type of content. These article pages, if done well, can attract links, pull traffic, and ads on those pages send visitors to your sales pages. Or, you can offer items for sale on these pages and those sales will come after your content has inspired the person to buy.
-
Thank you, that makes perfect sense.
-
It depends, I would take a look at your rivals backlinks and see what types of content people are linking to on their website. Then I would consider recreating it or developing something better. If that seems feasible I would go for it.
However, I think it would take a lot of effort to move the needle in terms of your current domain authority. If you have the resources I would say go for it. If not then I would target less competitive terms etc.
-
Thanks EGOL, that makes sense. I'm looking for backlinks to products essentially, so not a great deal of content but perhaps some "newsability" (we won't be beaten on price in the UK, for instance).
-
Many thanks Jordan - I've read that guide and it's really useful.
What I'm still unsure about is whether it's worth me getting someone to do, timewise. The guide seems aimed at getting backlinks from bloggers - can that make a big difference on higher competition search terms? My rivals have many backlinks from Govt. & national media sites, for instance.
-
After you are finished reading the Moz Guide to Linkbuilding that Jordan suggests, I would do a content audit to determine if you have valuable content assets that can be marketed as "important things for other webmasters to link to". If you have these kinds of assets then you have a chance at attracting good, editorially-given links. If you don't have these kinds of assets then you are entering an area of simply "building links" that are not supported by valuable assets on your website. That type of linkbuilding is very different because it will either be paid links, traded links, dropped links or other types of links that Google will classify as linkspam and slap you with a Penguin problem or an unnatural link penalty.
-
I would begin by reading Moz's guide to linkbuilding to get started. They will provide some insight into how to get a solid linkbuilding campaign started. You will also want to conduct some research and build content that will earn links as well. For example, if you find a backlink you would want from your competitor look at the content piece or page that earned the backlink. Decide if you can build a more compelling content piece or elaborate on a specific topic. Then reach out to the webmaster and start that relationship and pitch your content piece.
That is one example to get you started.
Hope that helps some.

Sudden spike in backlinks - should we disavow?
A kitchen remodelling firm in Australia has noticed a big increase in spammy backlinks to their website since April this year. Majestic shows that referring domains and backlinks during that period have gone up from 400 domains (10,000 links) to 1,070 domains (47,000+ links). About 100 are sitewide links. The vast majority are "follow" links directed at image files on the site - ending in .jpg. Ahrefs now shows the number one anchor text (23%) is a period (full stop) "." Most of the links come from .us domains, eg: cowboysr.us

alldpic.com Google Search Console isn't showing any of these links, there's no penalty on the site and there's been no noticeable change in rankings (if anything organic clicks went up over May, June, July) ... so we're wondering what action - if any - should be taken. Are these links likely to have a negative impact on the site and homepage? Should we disavow these links? Appreciate any advice. Thanks.0 -
At What Point Are We Doing Too Much Link Building?
Hello Mozzers! This is a question that has been gnawing at the back of my mind as I learn more and more about link building. Historically, we have offered scaling package sizes with larger numbers of backlinks hand-built each month. We do this so our packages are very tangible for our clients. Our packages range from 15-100 backlinks each month. As I learn more about how to build links PROPERLY I am finding it next to impossible to keep up. I feel like we are definitely going the wrong direction in that regard. What are some of your thoughts on this? Thank you in advance for your valuable advice and support, Moz community!

Guest blogging, guest blogging, guest blogging. Since I started my career as a "brand manager" I've heard the term "guest blogging" at least a million times. So I've put a fair amount of energy into it and for a long time it worked beautifully, still is in many ways. However, in the last month or two nearly every blog I have contacted about guest blogging has said that "due to an increase in guest blogging request we are now charging a fee of x" so on and so forth. Doesn't paying for links put you at great risk for being deindexed? And can't bloggers get in trouble for this as well? Do they not know, not care or think it doesn't apply to them? And if it's a sponsored post, say I send them $100 of free product and pay them $100 to do it, isn't that just hiring someone to talk about my brand? Why would google punish me for that? Anyway around it? Thank you so much! I look forward to your suggestions/advice/criticism.

Strategy When Building Links
When you build links do you keep track of every single link that you put out there? Or do you start and what to see what shows up in OSE? Some of these links take time so you would have to go back and check to see if it stuck. Im just trying to put together a procedure to follow. Also spread they out correctly, org, .net ,. com blogs, blog posts. etc Just curious how everyone else does it, so its easier to manage & track. Thanks !!

Backlinks: What are they really and how can I create them.
I am relatively new to the SEO world, and I want to build backlinks linking to our main site. My preferred way to create backlinks is by adding them in my blog comments or forum responses. I am an active participant in a large number of blogs/forums related to our field and I would like to add relevant backlinks in the comments/answers I post. I originally thought that a backlink was just a link, but none of the links that I have added to blogs like that have been recognized as backlinks. https://www.dynaread.com/ Why is this so? I know now that good backlink would be something like: Dynaread is a science based dyslexia remediation program for older struggling readers. However I have no idea how to add this types of links to blog comments or forum pages where there is no link tool. Do I have to do something with HTML? Please explain briefly what a backlink really is and most importantly how I can create them. Thank you in advance for your help! Joy P.S if you have suggestions about some resources where I can learn more about the subject please let me know. I love to learn more.

Link building by inviting bloggers
Hi everyone, I'm relatively new to SEO, and I have a question on a link building strategy for a holiday resort I am working on. The resort has a paintball arena and zorbing facilities at their premises. I want to use this in the link building strategy and the owners have agreed to have an open day for bloggers. Basically the resort will invite 20 local bloggers for a day to their resort. They get to play paintball, zorbing and get to see the resort in exchange for an honest write up about their day at the resort. I am looking at asking the bloggers to write about the event twice (Once before, and once after they visit the resort) with a minimum of 4 links to the website. I want to know how I can identify the top bloggers? What factors should I consider while making a list of 20 bloggers, and how do I measure these factors? Also, is this a good strategy for link building? And please feel free to add anything else you think I am missing out on, or will help in the link building. Cheers! Arjun

Is publishing content on multiple platforms like Tumblr, Blogger, Posterous, etc. a legit way to build backlinks?
My client has a fishing report that is published weekly on his blog. Would it be wise to syndicate that content on these other services with backlinks baked into each one? Any thoughts?
