Multiple My Business pages affecting local SEO?
-
Hey Moz!
We have a situation with a dentist firm with multiple doctors at the same address. They have two locations for their dental offices, and each of the dentists operate at both offices.
The issue: Each doctor insists on having their own by business page for each location and i'm afraid this is hurting their local SEO. We've been tracking keywords by week and we've seen some big fluctuations in ratings and i'm looking into why this is happening. The office in location 1 has it's own Google My Business page and the three dentists have their own my business page set up at the exact same address. The office in location 2 has it's own Google My Business page as well and the three dentists have their own my business page there also.
This leads the two addresses of the main offices having multiple My Business pages at the same address competing against eachother since they are all are registered with similar names and specialties. Could this be hurting our local SEO? Thanks!

No problem
I was going to go into a long explanation of how he needs to differentiate the listings from one another, but you saved me the trouble lol.

Thanks, David

I just wanted to say this was a great response. Gets my vote on where to start.

Hi Z!
If done properly, practitioner listings should not typically have a detrimental effect on the business' local pack rankings. Google's guidelines allow for their creation, and, up until about a week or so ago, these are the provisos I would make to ensure that you're managing this scenario correctly:
-
Be sure you've got a unique phone number for each dentist at which they are directly contactable, and that this number is being used for them across the board (on the websites, citations, social profiles, etc.)
-
Be sure you've got a unique landing page on each of the websites for each dentist, featuring their complete Name, Address, Phone number and other details. Be sure their citations link to the associated website landing page, rather than the homepage.
-
Be sure you are strictly adhering to Google's naming conventions, as specified in the guidelines: https://support.google.com/business/answer/3038177?hl=en It's incredible how many listings don't adhere to these, and Google spells it out in black-and-white how multi-practitioners should name their listings.
So far, so good, but then Google made a strange move about a week ago that I've covered in detail here. Recommend you read the whole thread, as it may be highly pertinent to your dental client. Basically, in a nutshell, Google appears to be filtering out businesses located at the same location that share the same category. So, in our example in that thread, a Moz member who owns a fishing charter company is being filtered out of the results because other fishing charters (same category) are located at the same address.
Your scenario particularly interests me because it rings bells of a practice I believe I recall Linda Buquet advocating some years back of practitioner listings (dentists, lawyers, etc.) not sharing the same categories. It has been a few years since I've heard Linda address this, and I'd love to know her thoughts on this given this recent Google change.
I think you have a very interesting opportunity here to do some experimentation with the filter if either of your client's practices and associated practitioners were previously all ranking highly.. Here's how I'd do that:
-
Do a Google search for whatever the category + city is that pertains to the dental practice (this might be something like 'Dentist San Diego'). See if the filter is being applied so that only the business or only one of the practitioners is coming up for that term in the local finder view you get to when you click on the 'more' link at the bottom of the local 3-pack. As described in the other discussion I've linked to, zoom in to see if the missing business or missing practitioners show up.
-
Then, what I'd experiment with is whether changing the category for one of the practitioners (changing it from Dentist to something like Pediatric Dentist) affects the results. You'd want to give it a few day and check back. See if changing that category then allows the practitioner to show up at the non-zoomed level when it was previously being filtered out.
In sum, practitioner listings have not been a problem historically when managed correctly, but with the recent filtering rolling out (which may be temporary or permanent), some new questions have just arisen. These issues could possibly be resolved by changing categories, where possible, but experimentation is needed to see how doing so might impact results.
I would love to hear back from you if you do embark on such an experiment, and your question has also made me wonder what Linda Buquet (an expert in Dental Local SEO) might say about shared categories for practitioner listings in 2016. Great topic!

How to Rank Local Website in Search Engines?
Hello, I'm the owner of a rubbish removal company based in London - Frank Rubbish Removal and trying to optimize the website of the company for search engines. Until now, I have hired a couple marketing companies but without success. What I want to achieve is to rank for local keywords in the rubbish removal niche, for example, Rubbish Removal Chelsea, waste clearance Hackney, waste removal Harrow...and similar local keywords. I have spent a lot of money on marketing companies and the website still can't go on 1st page of search engines in the UK. Can you tell me what I can do or who can hire to bring my website on 1st page for the local keywords?

More pages on website better for SEO?
Hi all, Is creating more pages better for SEO? Of course the pages being valuable content. Is this because you want the user to spend as much time as possible on your site. A lot of my competitors websites seem to have more pages than mine and their domain authorities are higher, for example the services we provide are all on one page and for my competitors each services as its own page. Kind Regards, Aqib

What Is The Best Strategy For Writing Image Alt Text For SEO?
Curious on this topic, as websites that are image heavy, but have little written content can have depend on alt text for "readable content". I am aware the "best practice" is to write it as if you were describing the image to a blind person, but are there any SEO strategies that people have seen good results with? Some examples I've heard are: "unique keyword phrase" "unique keyword phrase + brand name" "Unique Keyword Phrase + LSI Keyword" Interested to hear feedback from the Moz Community! And thanks in advance for sharing your insight.

Areaserved json-ld schema markup for a local business that targets national tourism
If there is a local business that thrives on ranking nationally for people searching for their services in that location, do you target the business's actual service areas or target nationally? For instance, a hotel in Denver, Colorado. Would the areaserved markup be: "areaServed":[{"@type":"State","name":"Colorado"},{"@type":"City","name":"Denver"}] Or "areaserved":"USA" The "geographic area where a service or offered item is provided" would be denver, colorado. But we would be looking to target all people nationally looking to travel to denver, colorado. Or would it be best to target it all, like: "areaServed":[{"@type":"State","name":"Colorado"},{"@type":"City","name":"Denver"},"USA"]

How can my categories rank for my different branches? Tidied site up but now local rankings are worse
Dear Mozzers , I am wondering if someone could please help with some advice and assistance on the following for our Tool hire site: Basically I like to know how we can rank for our categories for our different branch locations ?. We have a branch finder page and separate branch pages but I do not know if I should have an internal link from all our branch pages to all my different categories or not or is google clever enough to know that I have x locations and x categories and I should rank all the categories in all the locations. I think my site structure is fairly straightforward and on the face of it similar to what others do who have multiple branches . For example I enclose a link to 2 of our categories - carpet cleaner hire category and a floor sander hire category carpet cleaner category - http://goo.gl/cMyS4i floor sander category - http://goo.gl/4ipUyA Heres a link to our Branch Finder - http://goo.gl/UyTQdK Heres a link to one of our Branches for example - Bristol Branch - http://goo.gl/9TXHTK And heres our link to our google plus Bristol page - google plus bristol branch page - https://goo.gl/h0IwAK . We have link from our bristol page going to the bristol google plus page and visa versa. Currently within our internal linking structure there is No direct link on the branch pages to the categories ?. Is this something we need to do or not necessary ?. - If we do it , then it may mess up or confuse the page as I someone need to get all the category links on the branch pages ? We have lots of good unique content , lots of citations for our branches and categories etc but we just don't seem to rank at all well for any of our categories in local search. For example if somene was to search for - Carpet cleaner hire "City Name " or Floor sander hire "City Name" (City name being where our branches are). We dont rank very well for most of our cities. Even without putting the city name in we dont rank to well in local search. We used to have individual pages for our categories in each of the cities we have branches with unique content on all and these did rank quite well in a few cities but never top 3 in most and we got rid of these last month (start of Oct) as I was told that google may see this as quite spammy or doorway pages if I have a carpet cleaner hire Bristol page or a floor sander hire Bristol page etc ?.. All my location landing pages now just 301 back to the appropriate category. I am wondering if getting rid of these landing pages was a good idea as by tidying things up , I've seemed to have lost my local rankings for my cities. Can someone please advise if what I did was right and what else I should look at doing ?> Could it be an internal linking issue I need to sort ? Any assistance much appreciated.

Localized Search Results
I'll try to setup this question: I go to Google.com and set the search tools to a particular city that I am not in (say I live in Nashville but set the search tools for Rockville MD). I do a search for a specific term without a location modifier such as "chrysler town and country" and I don't see the website I'm looking for in the first 100 results. Then I keep the search tools the same, but change the specific search to "chrysler town and country rockville md" and the website I'm looking for is now the #1 result. What would affect the difference? I would have expected the website to have a similar ranking in both situations.

How to improve optimization of this page
http://www.atomicx.com/cincinnati-web-design.php I am trying to get this page to rank for "cincinnati web design" and related phrases. I redid the landing page with all new content, images, url, etc about 3 months ago. Since then the site is still not showing up in the top 50 results. I see no reason that the page would not be. Our seo and compute repair phrases have all gone up but our web design phrases are being very stubborn. Thoughts?
