Translated Videos for YouTube
-
We've translated product description videos, typically we upload the videos to YouTube once they are complete and then embed them on our website.
Should I create a new YouTube channel targeted to the locations for which these videos have been translated?
-
Hi Brandon,
It isn't possible to target YouTube channels by location, so I wouldn't recommend creating and maintaining several different channels.
Given that you seem to be talking about videos which are designed to convert (or are viewed close to the point when a customer does convert), I'd actually suggest that YouTube is not the right platform for you. The videos that you're putting all this effort into are going to cause youtube.com to rank—not your website. And the click-through rates from YouTube to your site will be poor.
To really get the most from this kind of video, use a service like Wistia, because it'll allow you to host the videos on your own site, and get credit for that in search results. Phil Nottingham gave another answer on this forum which explains this really well. In a nutshell, YouTube is good at mass reach, spreading a message, raising your profile—think "Dollar Shave Club"—but performs poorly for video content that's designed to convert. Very few people will click through from product description videos on YouTube, so you'll leak traffic unnecessarily. For product descriptions, demos, etc, you're better hosting it on Wistia and embedding on your site.
This will also allow you to fully control geo-targeting, because you can use hreflang on your product pages. Let's say that I have a UK shop in the /en-GB/ folder, and a French shop in /fr-FR/. I can now have the same product listed in each, using the appropriate video and translated description, and use hreflang to tell Google that these pages serve an equivalent function for users in those different locations.

Duplicate Content Regarding Translated Pages
If we have one page in English, and another that is translated into Spanish, does google consider that duplicate content? I don't know if having something in a different language makes it different or if it will get flagged. Thanks, Ruben

Multilingual Site with 2 Separate domains and hand-translated
I have 2 separate domains: .com & .jp

I am having a professional translator translate the English written material from .com. However, the .jp will have same pictures and videos that I have on the .com which means alt tags are in English and video titles are in English. I have some dynamic pages where I use Google Translate and those pages I place as "no index follow" to avoid duplicate issues and they are not very important pages for me any way. Question: since I am doing a proper translating - no machines involved - can I leave pages as is or should I include any format of these: ISO language codes
2) www.example/com/” /> Even though hand translated, the translation will probably be 85% similar to that if I used Google Translate. Will that potentially be seen as duplicate content or not at all since I have not used the Google Translate tool? I wonder from which angle Google analyses this. Thank you,0 -
Translating URLs worth it?
My company has content in 23 different languages in 30+ countries. We translate page content but we don't translate URLs. I am trying to figure out whether it would be worth the considerable extra overhead to translate the URLs as well. I'd really appreciate hearing the thoughts of the Moz community. Thanks in advance!

Are my translated pages damaging my ranking?
Hi there, I have a site in English but with duplicates in different languages. The first problem is that these translated versions of my site receive no ranking on google stars (while the english does) - why is this? The second problem is that SEOmoz counts the errors on my site and then duplicates this error count for all the translated versions of my site - meaning I have a huge amount of errors (too many on-page links). Add this to the fact that I use affilite ID´s to track different types of traffic to my site - so all page urls in english and other languages, with an affiliate id on the end of the url, count as an error. This means I have a huge amount of on page errors indicated by SEOmoz, plus no ranking for my translated pages - I think this is really harming my overall ranking and site trust. What are your opinions on this?

Google suggesting a translation
Hi everybody, I notice since some months that Google when used for german language results proposes a translation next to the listing of one of my websites. When searching for english results (hl=en) it does not propose a translation! My website is clearly in german (given as target in GWMT and by meta tag). Other pages on the same domain are not treated this way by Google. No translation is proposed for all subpages of this website. Obviously, Google considers the homepage of this website english instead of german. Any fix for that? It is a *.org Wolfgang

I have on site translated into several languages on different TLDs, .com, .de, .co.uk, .no, etc. Is this duplicate content?
Three of the sites are English (.co.uk, .com, .us) as well as foreign (.de, .no, etc.) - are these all seen as having duplicate content on every site? They're hosted under the same EpiServer backend system if this helps. But I am still copying and pasting content over each site, and translating where necessary, so I'm concerned this is indexed as being large amounts of duplicate content. Site traffic doesn't appear to be suffering but as I'm currently putting together new SEOs strategies, I want to cover this possibility. Any advice on ensuring the sites aren't penalised appreciated!
