SEO for e-commerce websites
-
Hi,
I'm a novice building a website (on wordpress with the plug-in Woocommerce) and would like some advice on how to optimise my online store for SEO.
-
Does 'traditional' link building apply to e-commerce
-
What else should I consider
-
Should I write a blog/vlog/
Thanks,
Lindsay

For SEO for ecommerce, you need to make sure each of your product pages is optimized well. Each page should have a unique meta description, title tag, and well written content. While this might be obvious, it's extremely important for ecommerce.
You need to think about each webpage on your website as an opportunity to rank, so ensuring each page is unique with well crafted content is a great starting point.
Be sure to do competitor research to see who is currently ranking for the important keywords you are targeting so you can come up with a strategic plan to outrank them.

Hi Marcus,
Thanks for the advice, but what does SOSTAC mean?

Hey Lindsay
This is something of a big question and the answer is going to depend on a range of variables including the competition, the products, the geography etc.
Certainly, I would start by tackling this by doing some traditional marketing planning. Look at the industry. Look at the competitors. Research the customers. What do the competitors do well? What are the opportunities to do something better?
You need to answer some of the foundational marketing questions and then see how your SEO strategy applies to this. For instance if you are a new store with entrenched competition in a competitive niche then is SEO the best return marketing tactic to get started? It is likely the tactic with the most return overall but perfect on page optimisation won't rank you past the ebay's and amazon's of this world.
Certainly you will need to tick all the SEO boxes:
- well optimised pages and site in general
- useful content that truly aides the user in their goal
- authority building
Exactly how you go about this requires a strategy that takes the marketplace into consideration. Certainly, the SOSTAC framework can be a useful way of structuring this kind of thinking and fleshing out your approach.
Hope that helps - broad question so hard to be specific without a URL.
Cheers
Marcus

WP SEO plugin
When working with WP sites I generally use Michael Torbert's All in One SEO Pack. I've encountered a few examples where when the homepage shows up on a Google search results page the title/title tag shows up as {Business Name:} | {Keyword/Description}. In the 'General Settings' of the plugin in the 'Home Title' field, I have it listed as {Keyword/Description} | {Business Name} I'm not sure why the order is getting switched and where the ':' comes from. I'm not sure if this even has any adverse effect. If anyone has had experience with this, your input would be appreciated. Note - I'm not seeing this issue reflected on Bing.

Multi-Site SEO using Host Headers
Hi - I'm working on a proposal for a client who runs 3 different career websites. He uses "host headers" to direct the website visitor to the correct website. For example, if the visitor comes from Washington he goes to one url. If he is in Kansas, he goes to another URL. Does anyone have any experience doing SEO with this type of system? What do I need to know? What are hurdles I'll encounter? Thanks, -Hunter

Do Blog Comments On Your Site Help SEO?
There is a lot of debate as whether or not having comments on your blog is helpful from an SEO perspective. Proponents believe that more comments (1) creates more content, which search engines love, (2) creates more relevant keywords that can be searched, and (3) helps with "freshness" of the site/content leading to greater site authority. Others like Joost de Valk believe that comments can actually hurt SEO because keyword density cannot be controlled. He argues that his top SEO content are pages not posts for this very reason. What is your opinion?

Give me your SEO Review
Hi Mozzers, I've been working on redesigning and revamping this site, http://www.canvaspaintings.com. Their domain and keyword are a match but not ranking #1. Some initial things I feel that needs to be changed are the links on the side and top bar, viewing the on page report, it does have a lot of links on every page. Trying to figure out how to remove them without having the top nav look empty. Previous category descriptions were written by possibly an article spinner or keyword stuffed writer. Need to start building more links, although PR5, it doesn't rank too well. Let me know your opinions and thoughts, I would love to hear them out. TMI!
