Blog - SEO Better? MyCompany.com/blog or marketing.MyCompany.com/blog? Percent difference?
-
We started blogging aggressively 3 months ago to bolster our organic search. We are building a new website and wonder if hosting our blog directly on our site is better than marketing.mycompnay.com? Is MyComanpany.com/blog a better choice - what percentage of SEO value would it be? We are building a new WordPress website.
Our blog is currently hosted on a subdomain with HubSpot software. WILL OUR SEO BE SIGNIFICANTLY MORE EFFECTIVE HOST THE WEBSITE DIRECTLY OUR DOT COM? It won't be as convenient with HS tool but we want the best possible SEO.

Hey Joseph -
Good question here. It's pretty impossible to say what percentage better a subfolder (/blog/) is than a subdomain (blog.mycompany.com), but there have been many case studies done over the years that it is better for SEO overall. At my old company, we moved from a subdomain to a subfolder and sorted out some technology (went to WordPress from TypePad), usability, and internal linking issues. Over the course of about 3 months we saw a great (200%+) increase in traffic. BUT, we also had a lot of content that should have been ranking, were cranking up the quality and quantity of content we put on there, and actively improving our site's overall SEO. These results not typical, your mileage may vary, etc.
I think in your case, I would say that you need to weigh the pros and cons of the effort required to make this work technically with the focus on creating amazing content that gets shared and linked to. I think often we focus too much on smaller technical things like subfolder v subdomain, while neglecting the real reason we are blogging/creating content (to build an audience).
I don't necessarily think this is a make it or break it thing for you, but if you have the chance to put it on a subfolder and it's not too challenging technically (I'm not familiar with the ins-and-outs of this with HubSpot), I'd recommend a subfolder like mycompany.com/blog/
Good luck!

Is 11k-30k search traffic too high for a small blog with low domain authority to compete for? Is competition all that matters?
Trying to decide on a keyword phrase for my next post. One of the two phrases I'm deciding between has 100x more traffic but the priority is wayyy higher and the competition is just one point higher (54 vs 53). I'm hesitant to write on a post that gets 11k-30k monthly volume however b/c it just seems like too much traffic for a small blog with a domain authority of only 18 to compete with. But if the competition is nearly the same and the priority is higher, should I go for it anyway? I generally go for things with lower traffic thinking I will be able to better compete. Thanks!

Identifying new topics/sub-segments?
Hi Guys, Currently doing KR brainstorming for a client, specifically for a modelling website (where people can hire models). I'm currently using Google Keyword Tool, Competitive Research, Keywordtool.io and brainstorming to identify new categories/sub-segments of the market like the examples below. Just wondering does anyone know of any good tools or other ways of doing this? Models + City

Wordpress SEO: Category page + Product page or only category page?
Trying to improving my website's ranks on google for a specific keyword (e.g. Samsung S6), I'm thinking about doing some experiments. I've a wordpress based blog. Now, I've the category "Samsung S6" (url: example.com/samsung-s6), with only the latest 6 news (with excerpts) + pagination. This ranks good, but it's a bit ugly as a landing page and I want a better rank. I could improve this page by customizing the template and adding some static text, but it could be a time-consuming solution considering that I'm using a third party theme and I should check this every update. Also, it's harder to customize this page then the next solution: I'm thinking about creating a new page Samsung S6 (url: example.com/samsungs6). This page will contain a product overlay (e.g. RAM, HD, screen size etc.), + product description with features and a small review of it's elements (e.g. camera description with results, suggested applications etc.) + some images/youtube videos + latest 6 news (without excerpts) + some links to other relevant pages in my website for that product, including a link to the category page. What will happen in terms of SEO? Any idea if the new page could rank better than the category page, considering that it has more static elements? Not sure if google could detects duplicates, or two page comepting for the same keyword on the same website is a bad thing. Which are your ideas? Is it ok to have two pages competing for the same keyword on the same website?

Does a dynamic meta creation harmful for seo?
Hi guys another newbie question. I have this 20 categories and i want each of it to have a dynamic meta to save time rather than doing it manually. All the 20 categories are name of countries. Target keyword: rent a car (category) Lets say im browsing malaysia category. Meta Title: Find affordable rent a car in malaysia Meta Description: Find affordable rent a car in malaysia only here at website.com, call and book for a car now! Meta Keywords: rent a car in malaysia, malaysia rent a car, affordable rent a car malaysia, cheap cars in malaysia Now i move to another category lets say hongkong, the meta should change dynamically by changing just the name of the category Meta Title: Find affordable rent a car in hongkong Meta Description: Find affordable rent a car in hongkong only here at website.com, call and book for a car now! Meta Description: rent a car in hongkong, hongkong rent a car, affordable rent a car hongkong, cheap cars in hongkong and this goes to all other categories as well. Will it hurt my seo? i mean it could be a form of duplicate content or whatever. Also please correct me of doing my meta, if its correct especially in meta keywords i dont want keyword stuffing as a problem why im not ranking. Thanks a lot guys. Im still in the process of learning the basics 😄

Local SEO: By city, by multiple cities, or by region?
My client is a kitchen remodeling company in Sterling, Virginia and is trying to rank well in local results. I am struggling with keyword selection mostly because I am still learning about local SEO. The city the company is located is Sterling, however their business comes from several other close by cities like Reston, Herndon, and Fairfax (Nobody lives in Sterling so they don't care too much about owning that in search engines). Is the right strategy: 1. Choosing one city and focusing on that (kitchen remodeling in reston, VA) 2. Optimizing for multiple cities (kitchen remodeling, reston, herndon, fairfax...) 3. Optimizing for an entire region (kitchen remodeling, northern virginia) I know it's hard to answer this with little information but gut reactions would be appreciated. I am a new SEOmoz member so excuse me if this question is too specific for this forum. I'm still getting a feel for the community. Thanks! Sean
