Product Page Links
-
I have a product category page at https://www.hurtlegear.com.au/s1000rr/ which currently has 38 products on it.
Problem is, all the product titles start with the name of the text: "bmw s1000rr" (because that's what they are) - so that means there are 38 anchored internal links on that page, all starting with the same keyword. You can see how that might look to the Google crawler.
Recently that page dropped from around 15 to outside the top 100, and Moz tells me that the page is keyword stuffed with "bmw s1000rr" (no suprise) so I'm guessing that may be the reason the page has disappeared out of the SERPs.
I don't really want to change all the product titles (then they wouldn't make sense) so I'm just wondering if there is any way around this? Is there some way of telling Google that this is a product category page and therefore to ignore the anchor text in all of those product links? Can/should the links have some kind of markup on them? Or is the page beyond help?
Basically I'm looking at a way of keeping the product titles as they are, but avoiding a page penalty from Google somehow.
I'm a bit of a newbie, any suggestions would be most appreciated.
Cheers, Graeme

Hi John, thanks for the answer, I really appreciate it, and it's given me some things to work on.
I can't see any changes my competitors have made, and they also haven't moved in the rankings, all that happened was I added a couple of paragraphs of extra text to the top of our page, and then about a week later it dropped out of the top 100. I added that extra text around 10 November, and since then have only made very minor tweaks to try and get it to re-appear.
I'll do as you suggested and in response to your specific points:
- Bulk up pages like https://www.hurtlegear.com.au/bmw/ as that should be able to rank for some head keywords - when you say "bulk up", would you consider it bulked up in it's current form? Or do you mean even more text than that?
- On this /s1000rr/ page, remove the links from the images and rely on the anchor text link. Reducing unnecessary internal links like this has been shown to help rankings - will do, thanks
- You could expose these model pages in your HTML sitemap. They're currently 3-4 clicks from the homepage, and bringing them up in your hierarchy could help get them crawled more - will do, thanks.
Cheers, Graeme
EDIT: Just after I posted this I've noticed we've reappeared at number 19. Will still implement those changes though, they sound sensible to me.

Hey Graeme -
Good questions here. I think there is something else going on with your page than over-optimization, though you could definitely remove some mentions of your keyword in that top chunk of text. Any idea if some of your competitors have done anything to move up?
I checked your page's cache and it hasn't been re-cached since November 20th, which surprises me. I checked your robots.txt and there's nothing there that causes alarm. Have you made any other changes to your page?
A few things I'd also think about on this page and your site:
- Bulk up pages like https://www.hurtlegear.com.au/bmw/ as that should be able to rank for some head keywords
- On this /s1000rr/ page, remove the links from the images and rely on the anchor text link. Reducing unnecessary internal links like this has been shown to help rankings
- You could expose these model pages in your HTML sitemap. They're currently 3-4 clicks from the homepage, and bringing them up in your hierarchy could help get them crawled more.
Good luck!

NOINDEX, FOLLOW on product page - how about images indexing?
Hi, Since we have a lot of similar products with duplicate descriptions, I decided to NOINDEX, FOLLOW most of these different variants which have duplicate content. However, I guess it would be useful in marketing terms if Google image search still listed the images of the products in image search. How does the image search of Google actually work - does it read the NOINDEX on the product page and therefore skip the image also or is the image search completely dependent on the ALT tag of any image found on our site? Thanks!

Will pushing a visitor to a conversion page hosted on a 3rd-party domain hurt the landing page ranking
Had an interesting question from a client. The client has a page that is optimized for a specific term. The goal of the page is to push users to sign-up for a trial. The trial registration (conversion) page is hosted by a third-party. Will pushing users to the conversion page cannibalize the SEO authority of the landing page. My reflexive answer is to say no, but now am not so sure.

E-commerce On Page Concern - Links and Anchor Text
Hi, how you doing? I have a set of very specific questions or concerns about anchor text and linking on an e-commerce category page. I was wondering if you could give your opinions and counsel. I own an e-commerce store about steel construction products. I have several category and product pages. One example of my categories is this. URL http://aceromart.com/Losacero-25-Ternium.aspx My concerns or questions: I have several technical specs or sheets. Which i include the link on the right part in "Informacion Adicional". How should i link those? I am bit worried on the anchor text. Should i use something like [download "product" technical sheet] or just [technical sheet of product] . I dont want to cannibalize, but i also want to appear as descriptive as possible. what would you recommend? The same thing happens on my videos. How should i link my videos? Is there a best practice? **what would you recommend. ** Thanks in advance for your opinions!

Optimise duplicate products or canonical link
We exist in a niche market with a good % of products that sell well at specific times of the year. Lets say for example a red cup can be sold as a christmas red cup and a valentine red cup or just a red cup. Would we be best to optimize each specific product specifically for those seasons/events on different pages or keep google pointed to just one page using a canonical link.

Duplicate content issues with products page 1,2,3 and so on
Hi, we have this products page, for example of a landing page:
On-Page Optimization | | Essentia
http://www.redwrappings.com.au/australian-made/gift-ideas and then we have the link to page 2,3,4 and so on:
http://www.redwrappings.com.au/products.php?c=australian-made&p=2
http://www.redwrappings.com.au/products.php?c=australian-made&p=3 In SEOmoz, they are recognized as duplicate page contents.
What would be the best way to solve this problem? One easy way i can think of is to nominate the first landing page to be the 'master' page (http://www.redwrappings.com.au/australian-made/gift-ideas), and add canonical meta links on page 2,3 and so on. Any other suggestions? Thanks 🙂0 -
What is the effect of too many internal links on a page?
Hi there! We have been doing a great effort during the last year but our main competitor is still above us in search rankings. Basically, the main differente remains now in the number of internal links, specially in our homepage. We have more than 200 and they only have around 100, so I think we are wasting too much link power among some irrelevant pages. What could be the effect of this?
