Recovering from spam links on MY site
-
Hey guys,
Having a weird situation and wondering if anybody can help. I run a sizable WordPress site with a number of content writers. One of the writer's accounts was hacked and was used to post several dozens of complete spam posts with spun content and links to all sorts of shady sites.
Recently the site has begun losing rankings on all sorts of pages. There's no manual penalty or anything, but I'm concerned that we're being penalized for having had these links on the site. Of course, as soon as we found the content, we immediately removed it, reset passwords, etc. But a decent number of the pages were indexed.
Does anybody have any experience with this or ideas of what to do about it? Is there somewhere we can talk to Google about it or some way to show that we are not part of bad neighborhoods?
Thanks so much for any thoughts,
Yon

I would check the site for malware most of the time people hack sites and leave much more than just spun content.
You can check it out by using https://sitecheck.sucuri.net/
To keep this from happening in the future, I have provided security information URLs at the bottom of the reply. What security measures have you taken to determine that there is no malicious code causing this?

** What do your backlinks look like ( I know they sent external links from your site out with the spam content I'm talking about links going to your site) did they link to you as well?**
Regarding speaking to Google, there are methods of letting them know you don't want to show certain content on specific URLs as well as telling them that content is outdated. Unfortunately, there is not a one click fix for what you're dealing with.
You can remove the URLs from Google as long as they're not being used for something helpful now by going to the first URL below. The URLS below will help you with the spamming external links

You can also communicate to Google that this content outdated through this method.

My best advice to you is doing a complete SEO audit as well as a security audit and prevent this stuff from happening in the future.
Use tools like Moz, DeepCawl, Screaming Frog SEO Spider, SEMrush etc. To keep tabs on all the fundamentals on your site.
Keeping this from happening in the future
if you want your site checked for malware every four hours and to have it removed you can add
- https://sucuri.net/website-antivirus/signup
- https://www.armor.com/security-solutions/armor-anywhere/
** for blocking malware and keeping this from happening in the future**
- https://www.incapsula.com/
- https://www.stackpath.com/web-application-firewall/
- https://sucuri.net/website-firewall/
This will help prevent attacks like this from occurring by whitelisting IP addresses or using double authentication across the board you will be able to minimize the chance this happening again.
To understand exactly what the problem is I would need to know the domain name as well as a bit more information. I hope what I've given you is helpful.
I would be happy to take a quick look at your site you feel comfortable posting your domain, please post it if you do not you can send it to me via private message.
I hope this is of help,
Thomas

Best way to link to 1000 city landing pages from index page in a way that google follows/crawls these links (without building country pages)?
Currently we have direct links to the top 100 country and city landing pages on our index page of the root domain.

I would like to add in the index page for each country a link "more cities" which then loads dynamically (without reloading the page and without redirecting to another page) a list with links to all cities in this country.
I do not want to dillute "link juice" to my top 100 country and city landing pages on the index page.
I would still like google to be able to crawl and follow these links to cities that I load dynamically later. In this particular case typical site hiearchy of country pages with links to all cities is not an option. Any recommendations on how best to implement?0 -
Redirecting Pages from site A to site B
Hi, I have a client who have a solid, high ranking content based site (site A). They have now created an ecommerce site in addition (site B). To give site B a boost in terms of search engine visibility upon launch, they now wish to redirect approx 90% of site As pages to site B. What would be the implications of this? Apart from customers being automatically redirected from the page they thought they where landing on, how would google now view site A? What are your thoughts to thier idea. I am trying to talk them out of it as I think its a poor one.

Do links to PDF's on my site pass "link juice"?
Hi, I have recently started a project on one of my sites, working with a branch of the U.S. government, where I will be hosting and publishing some of their PDF documents for free for people to use. The great SEO side of this is that they link to my site. The thing is, they are linking directly to the PDF files themselves, not the page with the link to the PDF files. So my question is, does that give me any SEO benefit? While the PDF is hosted on my site, there are no links in it that would allow a spider to start from the PDF and crawl the rest of my site. So do I get any benefit from these great links? If not, does anybody have any suggestions on how I could get credit for them. Keep in mind that editing the PDF's are not allowed by the government. Thanks.

Too many links?
I've recently taken over a site from another agency, which has hundreds of linking root domains. These domains are of very low quality and, in my opinion, are being ignored by Google. Is it best to 'clean up' some of these links, or leave them and start building quality links? I just don't want to waste time cleaning link profiles if there's no need.

Linking Sister-Sites - Diapers.com Example
Many of the big guns like 1800 Flowers, Diapers.com and others all have their sister sites in tabs at the top. Example: http://www.diapers.com/ with their 3 other properties. Since all properties link to one another on every page, it's really a wash, right? No real gain as engines know they are connected and it's the same link multiple times. No real problem either as it's natural for the user experience to have reciprocal links here between the brands. Any additional thoughts here?

Does a page on a site with high domain authority build page authority easier? i.e. less inbound links?
Is this also why people build backlinks to their BBB profiles, Yellowpages Profiles, etc. i.e. why do people build backlinks to other pages that link to them? Wouldn't it be more beneficial to just build that backlink directly to your target?

What on-page/site optimization techniques can I utilize to improve this site (http://www.paradisus.com/)?
I use a Search Engine Spider Simulator to analyze the homepage and I think my client is using black hat tactics such as cloaking. Am I right? Any recommendations on to improve the top navigation under Resorts pull down. Each of the 6 resorts listed are all part of the Paradisus brand, but each resort has their own sub domain.
