Can the design still be considered adaptive if the URL is different?
-
I was under the impression our site had a mobile dedicated design, but my developers are telling me we have an adaptive design.
The mobile site is set up different and has different content and the url is as follows:
www.site.com/MobileView/MobileHome.aspx
Can it still be considered adaptive if the URL is not the exact same? Hopefully this make sense and I appreciate anyone's input!

I'm not sure why you would want to do this, you use a canonical when page A and B are more or less the same and you want Google to index only page A.
When page A and page B are different, a canonical would make no sense and Google will probably ignore it.

Thanks again.
Do you have an opinion on adding a canonical tag to your mobile site that points to the domain root URL?

I don't think different banners, navigation or footers have real impact as you'd expect this to be different across screen sizes. I'd be concerned if my texts or internal linking are considerably different between both versions, or when there's content on the desktop version of the site that's not on the mobile version.
If 'stuff is hidden with CSS' means you're hiding texts, you should really look for a different solution as hiding text is against Google's guidelines.

Thank you for the reply! Sorry for any confusion, I am just relaying the information I am receiving from designers and developers.
Yes, when you access the site from a mobile device you are sent to /mobileview/mobilehome.aspx.
The homepage banners, top navigation and footer can be made different on the mobile site, and stuff is hidden with CSS. According to my developers "the look is different but the data is the same."
So based off this, it sounds like we need to be careful of the upcoming Google update, right?
Thanks again for your input! It's much appreciated!

A responsive (or adaptive) website does not depend on URL structure, it's just responsive or it is not. Do you have a link to the real website? When you access the main url (site.com) with a mobile device, are you redirected to /mobileview/mobilehome.aspx?
A website is responsive when content stays the same, no matter what screen size or device is used to access the webpage.
If content served to a mobile device is different from content served to a desktop computer, you may not have a responsive/adaptive design and should be wary of Google's upcoming mobile-first index.

Ecommerce web design read more toggle vs menu link on home page and product pages
Hello, We have an Ecommerce store. We have a lot of content on the home page and product pages and we are going back and forth between which one to use between a toggle "Read More" "Show Less" toggle for each section and a anchor linked menu. We have long product pages We're thinking a read more toggle is more appropriate for category descriptions so that they can go at the top of the category and not take up space. But the read more toggle with lots of content scrolls the page down and doesn't scroll it back up when you hit "show less" We're leaning towards a linked menu for the home pages and product pages for this reason, but an accordion type set of toggles would look nicer. What do you recommend, and how have you set up your read more toggles if they have lots of info so that they are not confusing? Are there other options? ' Not looking for code (I can do that) I'm looking for ideas on the cleanest home page, category pages, and product pages when they have tons and tons of textual content. Wanting to trim it up and make it look compact and neat! Thanks!

Confirm responsive design is accessible to crawlers?
Trying to ensure crawlers can access all important info on a new responsive website, but it's javascript-heavy. Following Google's advice/best practices, but can't get the Fetch and Render tool to confirm it's working. Anyone dealt with this before? Web Designer Needed
So I feel like I've almost convinced my boss to hire out a re-design for our website (which is SORELY needed.) I'm at the step where I need to start finding quotes and site builders. I want a responsive design site built modern and professional... Love the moz site but not responsive enough. My current favorite example is at www.hasoffers.com Does anybody have any suggestions of where to go? And as a bonus, if anybody is brave enough to ballpark what a site like this would cost that would be awesome. Doesn't have to be exact or even that close... Thanks for any advice given.

Is it better to redirect a url or set up a landing page for a new site?
Hi, One of our clients has got a new website but is still getting quite a lot of traffic to her old site which has a page authority of 30 on the home page and has about 20 external backlinks. It's on a different hosting package so a different C block but I was wondering if anyone could advise if it would be better to simply redirect this page to the new site or set up a landing page on this domain simply saying "Site has moved, you can now find us here..." sort of idea. Any advice would be much appreciated Thanks

Footer Links For Web Design Agencies - Bad?
So today Google have updated their Webmaster Guidelines and they have drawn particular attention to their update relating to Link Schemes. http://support.google.com/webmasters/bin/answer.py?hl=en&answer=66356 Unless you have had your eyes closed and your fingers in your ears since February then most people are aware of the types of link schemes that the updated is refering to but there is one area that isn't so black and white for me. "Here are a few common examples of unnatural links that violate our guidelines: Widely distributed links in the footers of various sites" We are a design agency and we design and build lots of websites for our clients. It is pretty standard practice for agencies to add a credit to the footer of websites and we pick up a lot of work from people that see a site that they like and click through the footer link to our site. Our footer credit is standard on all of the websites that we create:- Website by Teapot Creative Only the 'Teapot Creative' part of the credit is anchor text so we are only linking using our brand name with no intention of manipulating search results. Is this going to hurt us? or will the fact that we are only linking using our branded term and without any SEO intent keep us in the clear? Thanks.

Panda and Penquin Fall - Could HTML Design an Issue?
Hi, We were hit hard by Panda 3.4 on March 23rd 2012. Then Penguin came along and slapped us down a little farther on April 24th. White hat SEO for 13 years on the site. I have been trying to discover the reason we got hit so hard, to date 90% down. We ae wiped. I have a couple of keywords still #2 and #3 and we see up and down changes in Google webmaster tools, i.e. a keyword is supposedly up 50 points then another down 50. All other 150 keywords that we used to rank on the first page for are not even showing up. I have a person that is about to do a full link analysis but since we never went after links I just never had the feeling that is where our problem is at, but definitely going to explore it. The reason for my post is that last night I spoke with an SEO person that has some pretty good credentials (9 years experience and works currently at large online marketing company with seo with clients like Honda) and he was nice enough to just take a quick look at the site. He said he saw nothing really wrong and did not think that we were hit for any of the normal issues people are listing, i.e. duplicate content, backlinks. His first impression was that we were knocked down because the site is "hard to index". He said the site still uses tables and a lot of our Doc Statements were for HTML 4.01 from 1999. As we all know, there are 'many' experts in this industry. So I wanted a little feedback from the community. Our main site was built in Dreamweaver using tables. We do have a Wordpress blog that is very small and just now posting to add fresh content. (posts seem to rank pretty good, this is why I thought, you know he may be right) Would an older site be penalized like this for using tables? What would you do at this stage if you had a site that is not recovering? I have now reached panic mode and have to do something, just not sure of the next step. I will be happy to post the URL if anyone wants to help with advice. Thanks,
