Wrong page ranking and rank drop, help!
-
Dear Moz community I would like to hear your advice about our current SEO problems. Our website is www.poolsonline.nl. This is a website where people can learn the Polish language on our website. This website has been online since 2007. The website got really outdated, so we built and launched a new version on March 1st (one month ago).
We have created a salespage that we would like to rank for the keywords 'cursus Pools' (Polish course) first of all and 'pools leren' (learn Polish) secondly. The page is https://www.poolsonline.nl/cursus-pools-leren-spreken/
The old website was on rank 4-5 (roughly) for 'cursus Pools' and 'pools leren'. When we launched the new website we were on the top 5 with two of our pages. We were even on rank 1 and our salespage was also showing on the first page and often also in the top 5 (below the 'wrong' page of ours). We got quite a lot of trafic and new clients. However the problem was that the wrong page was ranking higher. We wanted our salespage to rank and not our home page (https://www.poolsonline.nl/) and not our free lesson (https://www.poolsonline.nl/lessen/groeten-en-gesprek-voeren-in-het-pools-les-1/).
So what we did:
-
Read/watched recourses about this problem: https://moz.com/blog/wrong-page-ranks-for-keywords-whiteboard-friday and https://moz.com/blog/wrong-page-ranking-in-the-results-6-common-causes-5-solutions and others.
-
Removed the keywords (cursus pools en Pools leren) from the wrong pages (home and free lesson pages).
-
Optimized the Salespage for these keywords
-
Improved internal linking with these key words to our salespage
-
Worked on link building for our salepage. We got about 5-10 links to our salespage in the first week of March (5 seems to be significant for this competition and we are working on more). These links are not yet in Moz OSE, but Google has indexed these pages and links. For reference, here are some of these links (not all):
-
http://www.iculture.nl/apps/ik-spreek-pools-taalcursus-pools-op-iphone/
-
http://pnkv.nl/nieuwsbericht.php?bericht=rozmowy-po-polsku-juz-po-6-miesiacach
-
Shared and promoted our salespage on social media
What we expected:
- Our salespage to show up on top for these keywords
- Our ranking to improve
What happened:
- Our salespage disappeared all together from the search results for these search terms (it does show up for more specific search queries, for example 'cursus pools leren spreken')
- Our site seems to keep dropping lower and lower. We are now on the bottom of page 1 or on page 2 for 'cursus Pools' and 'Pools leren' and not with the desired page
Questions we have for you to help us:
- Why do you think our salespage is not showing up anymore for these keywords ('cursus pools' and 'pools leren')?
- Do you think we got a penalty for over optimization or bad links?
- What can we more to get our salespage to rank for these keywords? (we are working on building/earning more links)
- What can we do to restore our rankings and not drop lower anymore?
- Do we need to give our efforts more time? How long?
- Any other adivce?
Thanks so much in advance!

Thank you James. We are just keeping things as they are right now and working on backlinks.
Any more ideas from others on this topic? For what it's worth I also discover a potential bad/penalty link. I asked another question about this here.

Content of the Product Page
Hi Everybody : how can you tell if the content on the product pages are accessible by google ? please have a look at my product page : http://www.fireplaceproducts.co.uk/stoves/aarrow-stoves/aarrow-ecoburn-defra-wood-burning-stove/ i used classes in product page to set the key features, construction ,... i notices other companies done these as text and they get better ranks do you think that's the reason ? also to test that i added the text exact same as the key features , construction ,... as additional information at the end of the product page , would you thin that would be considered as duplication ? Kind Regards Arta

Category pages ecommerce - SEO best practises
Hi there, I run an ecommerce company, www.footdistrict.com and we are trying to improve our rankings on head terms so we are optimizing our brand pages (ie http://footdistrict.com/marcas/nike.html) Note: a brand page is a category page on my store. We are adding descriptions of each category. This is great as we are adding value. On top of that, we want to add sub-categories just below the description. A sub-category is a family of items. The structure that we are trying to implement is: http://footdistrict.com/marcas/nike.html Nike History/Info of the brand Link Nike family of items A | Link Nike family of items B | Link Nike family of items C | Link Nike family of items C When you click on the first link of the left, you go to a page with all the products of that family and a title that matches the anchor of the category page. What do you think of this structure from a SEO perspective? How would you improve it? I see other ecommerce stores that use tabs or the internal search engine for these purposes. What are the benefits of each choice? Thanks and regards

Blog snippets on home page
Mozzes, We're running a real estate portal in which we have a pretty good news/blog section running on wordpress. It's placed into our LAMP site on a dash from our root URL: www.ourportal.com/news/ To attract traffic via our landing pages we publish article snippets from the blog, linked to the complete articles. What would be the optimal SEO here to lead the spiders to the orignal content? Follow, Noindex? Best Johan

Page Rank, Domain Rank, Link Building....Oh my!
Hi Everyone, So I am looking into a couple of sites that we can use for press release distribution. Naturally, I am looking for sites that will improve our SEO (sites that have a high domain authority). I guess I am just trying to wrap my head around the whole domain/page authority and how it effects our SEO. So for example, I am looking at prlog.org. They have an overall domain authority of 91...sweet! Is this all I should be looking at when I am looking to place a press release, which will include targeted links using appropriate anchor text? If I drill down even further to the actual section that the press release will live on, which will be the security section of the site, the page authority is a 49. Is this what I should be looking at? Do I have to drill down even further and look at the page rank for the actual URL that my press release will actually live on? I am assuming since it will be a totally new page that the page authority will be very low. Is this correct? Should I be looking at a combination of the two? The page authority of 49 is pretty low but the domain authority is very high. What does this mean for my SEO and my links? In a nutshell I need to know what I should be looking at for SEO purposes, is it domain authority, is it page authority of the section the site will live on or is it the actual page that my press release lives on. Is it a combination? What would you do in this situation? Also, could you give me a little more insight into when a low domain/page authority can actually hurt you. What the threshold where you get no link juice or are actually penalized? Do you have any insight in the domain/page domain number that is considered not worth it? Thanks all! Pat

One page website SEO
Can a one page website rank well with the right SEO? I am building a new site so it is best to put the content related to two or three related items on one page or create seperate pages? Surely by creating just one page I can put all my link building efforts into improving the authority of that page as opposed to spreading my time over 3?

Building separate pages for local searches
I found one of our competitors developed URLs for every state in the US. They linked all these sites back to their site and they are ranking very high for each of these states. Here are 2 examples http://metalbuildingsmississippi.com/ #1 for "metal buildins mississippi" http://metalbuildingsoklahoma.com/ #3 for "metal buildings oklahoma" these pages don't even have a PR. Would you recommend doing the same with my site, writing unique content for each URL and building links?
