Knowledge Graph product carousel: The mystery of ranking
-
When you search for software-related terms, Google serves a carousel-style item above the organic listings. I've been assuming this is part of the Google Knowledge Graph. See http://imgur.com/a/TQpM5
The mystery lies in the selection of companies that are included in this carousel: the brands included are completely unrelated to the brands that rank well in the "normal" organic search listings. Giving that more color, here are the top 5 brands in "normal" organic search listings, for the query "invoice software," noting where they appear in the carousel: BRAND // normal organic search position // carousel position
- Wave // 1st // not present in carousel
- Quickbooks // 2nd // 1
- NCHSoftware // 3rd // not present in carousel
- Invoicely // 4th // not present in carousel
- Freshbooks // 5th // not present in carousel
Inversely, here are the top 5 in the carousel, noting where they appear in the "normal" organic search listings, again for the query "invoice software":
BRAND // carousel position // normal organic search position
- Quickbooks // 1st // 2nd
- Zoho Office // 2nd // 9th
- Invoicera // 3rd // 15th
- Hiveage // 4th // 30th
- Apptivo // 5th // not present in first 10 pages of search results
Here's an annotated image of the same thing: http://imgur.com/a/0Pa6j
--I represent a brand (I'd rather not mention which) that ranks super well in the normal organic search listings, but doesn't rank accordingly in the knowledge graph carousel.WHAT WE'VE TRIED
-
implemented Schema markup
-
updated Wikidata information
-
updated Wikipedia information
We've reviewed the code on the pages that DO appear in the carousel, and haven't found any common threads.
Several weeks have passed since those initiatives. We've been re-indexed in that time, but are still not included in the search carousel.
I've seen people suggest resources like this
https://searchenginewatch.com/sew/how-to/2299454/4-google-carousel-optimization-tips
but those tips aren't addressing this problem. Also, things like claiming your business or other local business validation (which we've done) don't seem material to a non-local product search (but stranger things have happened, I know...).A couple of SEOs have suggested AMP, but I've yet to see any authoritative info suggesting a link between AMP and desktop results.
Any help appreciated! I will report back on my findings.
This is a follow-up to a question I previously posted here: https://moz.com/community/q/kinds-of-organic-search-results-google

I was curious if you found any resolution to your question about the Software top carousel. I am an SEO for a global software company and have noticed our listings in some of these but not others. They are not showing in any tools I'm using to track search features/snippets. I assume that's because a click on the listing goes to another search (of that product name) rather than to a URL.
I've considered adding Software Schema to our pages thinking that might give us a boost. But reading your responses, it sounds like there is no correlation. Have you found anything new about how to optimize for these?
-
Thanks Peter.
We're still on the hunt here, too, without resolution. I'll post when we crack the nut.
We've also reached as deep into our Google contacts as possible, with no clarity.
Cheers.

I've seen a relationship between some of those carousels and search volume, but it appears to be more complex than that (and I think there's a Knowledge Graph component). I don't think markup is having a big impact right now, except for highly specialized results (like recipes). Haven't gotten a good answer from Google, though.
-
Interesting. Are you suggesting that Google chooses who to include based on the volume of brand searches that it gets for each brand?
That doesn't necessarily match my expectation of who is already showing in the carousel, but I don't have solid data on it.
We continue to experiment with meta, markup, wiki, etc. No results yet. If anyone else has suggestions, I'd love to know. And I'll post outcomes here.

I can't do much more than speculate, I'm afraid -- I haven't seen any write-ups that seemed to do more than guess. Traditionally, the carousel results were Knowledge Graph driven, but that seems to have evolved. Some carousels are clearly based on search volume. See, for example...
https://www.google.com/search?q=best+movies+of+1984
I guess it no longer states this, but at some point I swear there was help text claiming this was tied to search volume. So, the Knowledge Graph is probably providing the movie list, but volume is driving who "ranks", so to speak.
I suspect something similar is happening with these new business listings, but I'm not sure. Google hates when people manipulate search volume, so they're very unlikely to confirm this.
I don't believe this is connected to any kind of schema or on-page markup at this point. Updating your Wikidata information is probably a good step, but not a sufficient one to get into the list (I suspect).

Ranking Drop
hey guys, I know there is always someone here asking this questions, but I have done my fair share of investigation and have not come up with a cause. my ranking dropped from page one to page 2 or 3 last sunday in time span of 4 hours. After that I read that google was updating panda with 4.1, but don't know why I got hit exactly. my competition is all clear and some have even gained rankings, and mine dropped even though my domain and page authority increased as well. any ideas would help. I already checked all the obvious ones (such as spam, links, content, etc)

My rank suddenly drop
Hi before i subscribe for MOZ i have hired a seo expert to do an optimization for my escort website, it was really hard since im not knowledgeable and have no clue about it also my niche is kinda hard as what everyone says. The SEO did a good job ranking my site but in less than 2 weeks my ranking goes down and every time it happen what i do is call him and tell him about the situation and in just few days my rank goes up again and im in page 1 of google. My question is, is that normal? like ranking drop in less than 2 weeks and he could easily rank me up in just few days? I pay just to make sure that im on page 1, so every time he put my site on page 1 i pay for it. Gawd i still have no clue whats going on, i have a lot to learn, black hat, white hat, proper back linking, etc etc so i'd really love to know if its normal cause if it is then no point for me to learn SEO as he is doing job well done. I was just afraid that he is doing this to rip me, not that i dont trust him but you know this days everyone needs something for a living 🙂

Good organic ranking/Poor local ranking
Hi, I am a local retailer with a physical store in a major US City. My website is very well ranked on major keywords related to my business from an organic result perspective (between 1st and 3rd spot). However, in terms of local results (google place), my website isn't even ranked (except for one specific long tail keyword). Anybody know why? Thank you so much for your help. This is driving me crazy:-)

Ranking not improving
Our site is now 3 months old (although the domain is older) but rankings don't seem to be improving at all. We've got some good quality relevant links coming into the site, and the content is unique and often updated. Is there something holding the site back? Am I being impatient? the site is www.help-my-mobility.org Thanks.

Does server location affect rankings?
Hey guys, I'm just wondering whether you can help me out here. We're considering moving our servers to a new country but are a little hesitant to what - if any - SEO impact it would have on our clients' sites. For instance, if all of our clients are UK-based but their server isn't, would that affect their rank in Google UK? Or is it simply just a case of whether moving a server would affect the site speed or not?

Sudden drop in rankings
Hi there, I've been working on this site for three or four months (it was a brand new site), and we were seeing some really great improvements in rankings. I've concentrated on writing lots of good quality content and building a network of links through blogging and social networks. Then, last weekend (6th October), we got completely wiped off of the results. We went from rankings 2,3 and 4 for our target terms to not being in the top 100. I assumed we'd been given a penalty from Google as we'd been SEOing too hard and removed a reciprocal links page we had and asked Google to reconsider. I just got a message back saying there hasn't been any manual penalty, so it's just down to the algorithm. I'm running am SEOMoz analysis, but so far it's just coming up with things like page titles too long and too many links on pages, which I can fix, but don't seem like something that would completely destroy us so abruptly. I think we really have the most and best content on the subject of becoming a model, which has taken a great deal of effort to put tgether, so this is crushing. If anybody can shed any light, I'll be extremely grateful, and I'd be interested to knwo if anyone else has experienced anything similar. Thanks in advance! URL: www.modellingadvice. info Kat

Pages not ranking - Linkbuilding Question
It has been about 3 months since we made some new pages, with new, unique copy, but alot of pages (even though they have been indexed) are not ranking in the SERPS I tested it by taking a long snippet of the unique copy form the page and searching for it on Google. Also I checked the ranking using http://arizonawebdevelopment.com/google-page-rank
Technical SEO | | Impact-201555
Which may no be accurate, I know, but would give some indication. The interesting thing was that for the unique copy snippets, sometimes a different page of our site, many times the home page, shows up in the SERP'sSo my questions are: Is there some issue / penalty / sandbox deal with the pages that are not indexed? How can we check that? Or has it just not been enough time? Could there be any duplicate copy issue going on? Shouldn't be, as they are all well written, completely unique copy. How can we check that? Flickr image details - Some of the pages display the same set of images from flickr. The details (filenames, alt info, titles) are getting pulled form flickr and can be seen on the source code. Its a pretty large block of words, which is the same on multiple pages, and uses alot of keywords. Could this be an issue considered duplication or keyword stuffing, causing this. If you think so , we will remove it right away. And then when do we do to improve re-indexing? The reason I started this was because we have a few good opportunities right now for links, and I was wondering what pages we should link to and try to build rankings for. I was thinking about pointing one to /cast-bronze-plaques, but the page is not ranking. The home page, obviously is the oldest page, and ranked the best. The cast bronze plaques page is very new. Would linking to pages that are not ranking well be a good idea? Would it help them to get indexed / ranking? Or would it be better to link to the pages that are already indexed / ranking? If you link to a page that does not seem to be indexed, will it help the domains link profile? Will the link juice still flow through the site0
