Changes in Sitemap Indexation in GWT?
-
I've noticed some significant changes in the number and percentage of indexed URLs for the sitemaps we've been submitting to Google. I've been tracking these numbers directly from Google Webmaster Tools>Site Configuration>Sitemaps. We've made some changes that could be causing the changes we're seeing, but I want to confirm that this wasn't just a change in the way Google reports the indexation.
Has anyone else noticed major changes, greater than a 30% change, in the indexation of your sitemaps in the past week?
Thanks,
Joe

Hey Joe,
I noticed the same thing (large drop in indexed number/percentage of pages) a few days ago and thought that was related to a ranking drop I have experienced. All I did was resubmit all (tag, category, posts) sitemaps via GWT and the next day Google had almost 100% of my submitted URLs back in the index. However, that didn't fix my apparent Google penalty issue so I'm still searching for a solution:

Oh, this was with a wordpress site utilizing Yoast's WP SEO plugin to create XML sitemaps.

I use the same manual approach, manually dumping into Excel on a regular basis. I'll usually increase the frequency if we are making changes that should effect indexation.

Just the past week i am not too sure. Out of curiosity, how do you track your indexed pages? Right now i dump manually into excel for historical records and tracking, which lends to not doing it more than every month or two. You just eyeballing weekly and notice changes?

Sorry I forgot to specify that this has been over the past week.
Thanks for the reply, Ryan.

What time frame are you talking here?
Edit: I manage about 25 different sites, and I have seen a large fluctuation (increase for the most part) since April/May.I have seen upwards of 50%. Most of my flucuation i think was due do some good site/url structure and SEO work i did a while ago, and i gather that panda & google have liked some of the changes (about freakin time). It has not been due to an increased content.

Duplicate website pages indexed: Ranking dropped. Does Google checks the duplicate domain association?
Hi all, Our duplicate website which is used for testing new optimisations got indexed and we dropped in rankings. But I am not sure whether this is exact reason as it happened earlier too where I don't find much drop in rankings. Also I got replies in the past that it'll not really impact original website but duplicate website. I think this rule applies to the third party websites. But if our own domain has exact duplicate content; will Google knows that we own the website from any other way we are associated like IP addresses and servers, etc..to find the duplicate website is hosted by us? I wonder how Google treats duplicate content from third party domains and own domains. Thanks

Did .org vs. .com SEO importance recently changed?
I have seen previous answers in the Forum about this subject but Google has seemed to have again changed the playing surface. Within the past 30 days, we have seen a huge spike in organic search returns seeming to favor .org as domain authorities. Has anyone else noticed this shift and is it just coincidence or worth factoring in? If it is a shift, will Google punish those that have .org but have used.com previously for switching the redirects to serve .org first? Thanks, Jim

Homepage Index vs Home vs Default?
Should your home page be www.yoursite.com/index.htm or home.htm or default.htm on an apache server? Someone asked me this, and I have no idea. On our wordpress site, I have never even seen this come up, but according to my friend, every homepage HAS to be one of those three. So my question is which one is best for an apache server site AND does it actually have to be one of those three? Thanks, Ruben

Drop in Traffic from Google, However no change in the rankings
I have seen a 20% drop in traffic from google last week (After April 29th). However when I try to analyze the rank of the keywords in the google results that send me traffic they seem to be the same. Today (6th March) Traffic has fallen further again with not much/any visible change in the rankings. Any ideas on what the reason for this could be? I have not made any changes to the website recently.

Test contet/pages indexed by search engines
During the web development stages of our Joomla CMS website, we have managed to get our site indexed for totally irrelevant test pages mainly to do with Joomla and some other equally irrelevant test content. How damaging is this to our domain from an SEO prospective and is there something we can do about it? When we do a site:domain.com search we see hundreds of testpages with test/irrelevant meta tags etc.
