Site Hacked: Is it Faster and Better to 301 or 404 Irrelevant URLs?
-
Hey Everyone,
So our site was hacked which created a large amount of irrelevant URLs on our domain; resulting in thousands of 404 errors and pages coming up for searches unrelated to our brand. The question is now that the issues have been resolved (and site re-submitted) would it be quicker (and more ideal) to redirect important 404 errors that see traffic, have links…etc. although not relevant or just let everything 404 out?
We’re not as concerned with offering a relevant user experience because these are not in our demographic but want to avoid these pages convoluting our analytics as well as issues that might arise from Google thinking these topics do apply.
Any help or insight would be very appreciated.
Please let us know if you have any questions, concerns or we could provide further details that might help.
Looking forward to hearing from all of you!
Thanks in advance.
Best,

Hi Ben!
I have similar problem with one of my sites. It was hacked before and now Google is showing number of irrelevant links that too in a different language. I have implemented redirects to most of them but they still appear in results.
- What do you think about blocking them in robots.txt?
- Or requesting URL removals in GSC?
I'd really appreciate any help from the community!
Thanks!
SK

Hi Ben,
No, will not expedite it. It will take time for Google index to catch up and remove them. I know it's frustrating, so just be patient with it. Most of us, including myself, have been through it. Good luck!

Hello Kevin,
Thank you for your response and help. That’s a great point, do you think it would help speed things along if we also redirect on top of the 410 error? - Just in case and more in the meantime.
Please let us know if we could provide any further details that might help.
Looking forward to hearing from you!
Thanks again.
Best,
-
If not relevant, why 301 them? 410 them and remove url's in search console.

Vanity URL vs domain URL
Hi guys, Our CEO is having an interview with a known broadcaster on radio. During the interview he will mention a specific URL www.example.com/marketingcampaign that we want track on Google Analytics, therefore behaving like a vanity URL redirecting to the actual URL www.example.com/resources/primary-keyword-2018. Would this work the same way a vanity URL in terms of tracking or not such as following guideline here ? I am asking because vanity URLs are supposed to be completely different domain name that gets purchased and in our case it is the same domain name just with a different URI. thanks guys!

Expired domain 301 Redirection Strategy of Competitors
I have one simple question about expired domain redirection strategy. I am 100% sure that one of my competitors are using this strategy to rank the website. Is there any tool or method to find out how many domains competitor has redirected to his/her website? Your answer is highly appreciated. Thanks

I am stuck with a nasty cloaking hack
Hi There I am just three weeks into my SEO career and I bumped into this issue with one of our clients. I found a massive cloaking hack. In google search console I was shown 404 errors for many links and that is what everyone can see, however, when I crawled the site as a google bot I got 200ok messages and was shown a full page of essays, videos, links etc.. This obviously caused a significant drop in the website's ranking. This looks to be a professional and well hidden hack. I googled many different tools to check for cloaking all of then said no error, here are some of the tools I checked for hacking: seo tools, bruce clay, webconfs, web tool hub, small SEO tools, and many more and none of them found the problem. The issue only came up when I manually searched the site as a google bot. What can I do in this situation? I am stumped. Whats with all these tools? What should I do as a next step? Thanx for your advice, Ruchy

Curious, anyone ever had over half of their indexed links drop on an e-commerce site?
In a year went from around 300k indexed pages to around >100k according to GWT. Could this be duplicate content issue, lost links, spam, aged links or all of the above? either way an audit is in order. Thanks! Chris

Universal Analytics & Google Tag Manager - Track URLs that include hashes
Does anyone have any experience tracking URLs that include hashes (#) using Universal Analytics and Google Tag Manager? Can it be done using GTM's container for UA, using the "more settings" options? Or building another tag to work with the GTM UA container? The fallback I'm considering is implementing the UA code in GTM for every page as Custom HTML with the "ga('send', 'pageview', location.pathname + location.search + location.hash);" solution, rather than GTM's specialized UA tag. I'm not yet sure what problems may arise from that, if any. Thanks in advance.

Tracking Clicks on a Global Header Across Multiple Sites
Hey All, A particular client has multiple websites and we're planning on implementing a global header across 15+ sites. I've been looking for a way to track the clicks on this global header across all sites (that is that they are summed up), what's the best way to go about this if I am using Google Analytics (I know Adobe site catalyst could do this no problem with some advanced tweaking), any ideas? I could do the general click tracking route and tag every link but that will only help me if I do that for each site (that being said, if the global header for all sites pulls from a single HTML, then tagging it would technically count all the clicks from all the sites, the only caveat being that I'd have to pick which Google analytics profile I'd want to track the header with). Thoughts? Thanks!

Why does a selection of sites I have written guest posts on not come up on my link analysis?
I have done a few guests posts on different sites and they are not coming up in my link analysis report.

We created an info graphic on one particular site and this site isn't coming up on the link analysis report. Would there be a reason for this. I ran a check on the sites code and it doesnt contain "nofollow" as i originally thought this was the problem. Here is an example of our work on a site that isn't coming up on the analysis report. http://www.electriciansblog.co.uk/2013/10/energy-saving-using-led-lighting/ Thanks0 -
Why am i getting a flux of increase in Impressions on my site & then it decreases
They guys. Hope everyone is having a great week. I wanted to get some inputs from you guys in regards to what is happening to my site that i quite don't understand. Every month or so i get this influx of high visibility with impressions for my keywords and then the impressions go away but my rankings still keep going up. Has anyone experienced this before and can give me some insight on what is going . Why do i get such a big jump and then it dies off only to return again a month later or 2 months later. I know you guys want probably some info from my site or from analytics or webmaster tools so i will provide as much as i can . For now i have included a screen shot.
