Prioritising SEO Tasks for Biggest Impact
-
Hi
I want to find out, what people feel the top 3 focuses should be for an SEO (I know there are hundreds)...Content/Backlinks/Social/Technical
I'm trying to better prioritise my work - I work on a large ecommerce site - with just me as the SEO & a development team in France
So most of the technical stuff is controlled there. I focus on audits, KWD research & briefing content how to better optimise products.
A lot of time is taken up by that as the site is so big & I'm concerned I am not putting enough effort into other areas.
What should these areas be?! Backlinks/Content/Blogs - I can't do everything but would like to prioritise tasks which will have the
biggest impactCan anyone help
-
Hi
Thanks for this! Yes speed I have also raised with our development team in France - again I have no control over when they work on this or how. I can only make improvements locally.
Our site is Key.co.uk
I want to get https implemented across the site, but again this relies on our dev team.
For 2 years I've focused on properly optimising product titles/meta & descriptions & this has helped but I've hit a wall.
Our competitors don't seem to be building backlinks, they don't have more content than us & I just cant find a reason for them ranking so well.
-
Thank you for your advice!
Would you optimising product descriptions? I spend my life trying to manage this with content teams & it proves difficult. Most of my time seems to be spent here with little time left for the rest.
Another thing I find hard to tackle is backlinks, obviously it all relies on content & as you said for an ecommerce site this is difficult. Outreach and purchased links aren't allowed, so I'm guessing writing content for our site, seeding it on social & hoping for backlinks is the only way?

Hi Becky, I would prioritize like this:
1- Technical: This goes at the top of the list because if Google can't index the site, or there are other technical fixes that need to be done, the other things won't matter.
2- Backlinks: Again, this comes before content because your content won't start to surface until you start to build up the authority of your site.
3- Content: Once you know Google can index your site/there aren't any technical issues, and your site authority is going up with a quality, diverse backlink profile, then I'd say content is the next priority—this is where you can get strategic with KW research, look at what your competitors are ranking for and see how you can do on-page optimization to rank for those same keywords.
Hope that helps!

Hi Becky,
In general this will depend a lot on the kind of impact your looking for / companies objectives.
First thing is find your high converting keywords and work on improving ranking for those.
Second find ways for automating work with templates for your onpage optimisation. Though not always best for SEO, unavoidable for Big ecommerce sites.
Build links e.g. by producing quality content relevant for your audience.

Any SEO disadvantages with creating pages under a directory page which doesn't exists?
Hi, Let's say we are going to create pages in the URL path www.website.com/directory/sub-pages/. In case this page www.website.com/directory/ doesn't exists or redirected; will the pages created in this URL path like stated above have any issues in-terms of SEO? We will link these pages from somewhere in the website and planning to redirect the /directory/ to homepage. Suggestions please.

Any disadvantages of employing additional images which open in new window? Will it impact bounce rate and rankings?
Hi all, Our website is all about our software product. Generally our website pages are filled with 3 to 6 screenshots of our product features. As Google recently shifting to mobile index and pageload speed is going to be priority, we decided to compress the images on our pages and show the same images of large size in new window when someone clicks on a image. I wonder if this helps or has any disadvantages? Users may click on these clickable images while browsing the pages and may shift to new window to view the image. Will this have any negative impact on bounce rate? Please share your thoughts. Thanks

Canonicals from sub-domain to main domain: How much content relevancy matters? Any back-links impact?
Hi Moz community, I have this different scenario of using canonicals to solve the duplicate content issue in our site. Our subdomain and main domain have similar landing pages of same topics with content relevancy about 50% to 70%. Both pages will be in SERP and confusing users; possibly search engine too. We would like solve this by using canonicals on subdomain pointing to main domain pages. Even our intention is to only to show main domain pages in SERP. I wonder how Google handles it? Will the canonicals will be respected with this content relevancy? What happens if they don't respect? Just ignore or penalise for trying to do this? Thanks

Question: About Google's personalization of search results and its impact on monitoring ranking results
Given Google's personalization of search results for anyone who's logged into a Google property, how realistic and how actually meaningful/worthwhile is it to monitor one's ranking results for any keyword term these days?

ATTN SEO MINDS: Is there a way/tool to categorize keywords from an Omniture/GA report?
So ideally I would like to take the list of keywords I am currently ranking for, and group these based on what the user intent was in making that query. For example if I am a Thai delivery chain and I am currently receiving traffic from the queries "vegan dish" and "tofu thai food", I would want to have a column in a keyword report that says these queries fall into the VEGETARIAN category. I think what I want to know is how can I filter a massive list by a range of keywords? I want to know does this cell contain, "keyword A" or "keyword B" or "keyword Z". If so list the corresponding category. This way I can look at keyword performance by category or user intent/motivation. Is there a tool out there that will help me accomplish this, or is there a good solution in excel I can use?

Did .org vs. .com SEO importance recently changed?
I have seen previous answers in the Forum about this subject but Google has seemed to have again changed the playing surface. Within the past 30 days, we have seen a huge spike in organic search returns seeming to favor .org as domain authorities. Has anyone else noticed this shift and is it just coincidence or worth factoring in? If it is a shift, will Google punish those that have .org but have used.com previously for switching the redirects to serve .org first? Thanks, Jim

Post penguin & panda update. what would be a good seo strategies for brand new sites
Hi there. I have the luxury of launching a few sites after the penguin and panda updates, so I can start from scratch and hopefully do it right. I will get SEO companies to help me with this so i just want to ask for advices on what would be a good strategies for a brand new site. my understand of the new updates is this content and user experience is important, like how long they spend, how many pages etc social media is important. we intent to engage FB and twitter alot. in New Zealand, not too many people use google+ so we will probbaly just concentrate on the first two hopefully we will try to get people to share our website via social media, apparent that is important should only concentrate on high quality backlinks with a good diverse set of alt tags, but concentrate on branding rather than keywords. Am i correct to say that so far? if that is the principle, what would be the strategy to implement these goals? Links to any articles would also be great please. Love learning. i just want to do this right and hopefully try to future proof the sites against updates as possible. i guess quality content and links will most likely to be safe. Thank you for your help.
