Is a recent hack or the disavow tool causing my alarming dropping in rankings!
-
My business site has been very successful organically for many years. Just recently we got hit with a spam hack and it was resolved within 3 days. However now my rankings are plummeting and I am so stressed out! So here is some timeline information any info would help:
- Sept. 4th hack first detected on Google
- Sept. 7th site completely clean, reconsideration accepted, spam content and links removed. Manual actions cleared. Rankings at this time have not been affected.
- Sept. 11th disavowed a few incoming links that were completely spam. (In hindsight I know this could have been the beginning of the end using this tool)
- Sept. 21st start to notice first significant drop in rankings and I went into GWT and downloaded latest 1000 links, I realized ALL of these were either hacked sites as well with spam content linking to our now delete spam content or inappropriate adult content.
- Sept. 22 Disavowed the 1000 domains (there are still probably 1000-2000 more)
- As of today rankings have SIGNIFICANTLY dropped, I have resubmitted sitemaps, image sitemaps, fetch and rendered as google.
I'm stressing out incredibly and feel like I have made an error and that my site will never recover. I've worked using ALL white hat seo and the site used to rank very well top of page one for almost all my keywords. I feel lost and don't know what else I can do - and I know many say wait but it feels like forever.
Is it possible that I didn't make a mistake using the disavow and that Google just took a while to penalize for the hack? Please any advice or experiences I would love to hear and appreciate so much anyone who takes the time to respond.

Hi Kristin,
I have left a pretty detailed message in private messages I hope that is helpful please feel free to contact me with any questions.

Hi James,
I am sorry to hear that you have experienced this too. If you don't mind me asking what happened as a result of the negative SEO campaign? Are you experiencing similar ranking issues and how long has it been? Did you follow the steps I did or any others ones?
-
Hi Thomas,
Thank you for your response. I have private messaged you further details along with a link to my site. I really appreciate you taking the time to over expertise on my issue.

First off I am extremely sorry to hear that you're the victim of negative SEO it is unbelievably frustrating and needs to be dealt with in a very methodical manner.
I do not believe the disavowed tool is what's hurting you. It much more likely there is still something in your site that is allowing this hack to continue no matter what you have to do monitor the site make sure it is not carrying any malware.
Did you have a backup of the site? After the the with a spam hack?
The fact that the attack was detected by Google and you had a manual penalty is extremely unfortunate.
Because most businesses are obviously smart enough not to direct pornography and other spam URLs to their site many times Google must reevaluate the site taking into consideration that this happened and no one was there to catch it.
I literally got done with a disavowal on a site that had been penalized manually and it surprisingly went up very quickly in the rankings. Once the bad URLs were deleted. I have to stress in this case bad back links had almost no authority.
I honestly feel that you are getting a lot of juice from the bad back links and by disavowing them something you had to do obviously you have lost the juice the site had before.
- "Sept. 21st start to notice first significant drop in rankings and I went into GWT and downloaded latest 1000 links, I realized ALL of these were either hacked sites as well with spam content linking to our now delete spam content or inappropriate adult content."
Was this a content injection? is that why you're saying now deleted spam content or inappropriate adult? The reason I ask is if the person did a content injection wrote over your existing content and you deleted it that would do a real lot of damage.
- Sept. 22 Disavowed the 1000 domains (there are still probably 1000-2000 more)
I would recommend doing link disavows I know that does not sound fun. What are you planning to do about the 1-2000 more how many more are accumulating every day?
- As of today rankings have SIGNIFICANTLY dropped, I have resubmitted sitemaps, image sitemaps, fetch and rendered as google.
I would honestly need to know a lot more about your site to tell you the best step forward but one thing I can tell you is you need to figure out if you are deleting content that had regular links to it and are destroying website because somebody did a content injection and wrote over content that was already on your website.
Let me know if you're willing to share your domain with me via private message or hear I would be happy to take a look without understanding if the site is still hacked you can do some things like check using https://sitecheck.sucuri.net to see if there is any blatant malware still on the site.
I would start there and I would add a WAF companies like Sucuri & incapsula are lifesavers when it comes to keeping this type of attack from happening.
Make sure your CMS is up-to-date if you're using one.
I hope this helps I do not think it is the disavowed tool if these are new links but that would depend on how long you have been keeping track of your links all that would need to be checked.
Respectfully,
Thomas Zickell

Website starts ranking on Google then always drops - Targeted for Australia but most traffic from U.S - Bounce Rate at 94.49% - HELP!
Hi everyone, Thank you for your time. During the past 8 months I have been working on this website which is a .com.au . I have fully optimised the website which is targeting Brisbane in Australia and I have setup everything (Sitemaps, Geo location on WMT, Fetched as Google etc..) However the website just does not want to rank at all. I know that the previous SEO company were not too good but since then I have disavowed all unnatural links, we have moved the hosting to a new company and the website content has been updated. Only recently the Website has started ranking for it's brand name (not even in top of Google) and whenever a keyword starts ranking above the Top 50 of Google it suddenly drops again. The other issues is that even if I have setup the website to target Australia the majority of traffic comes from the U.S. Last month out of the 127 Session - 85 from United States - 29 from Australia - 3 Brazil - 2 India - 2 Italy - 1 Canada etc... Because of this the website has a Bounce rate of 95%. If you would have any advice, tips or recommendations that I could do to try and fix this it would be much appreciated. I suppose we can consider this as some kind of penalisation - potentially due to the past work and issues that occurred before the business became our client but I am not sure what more I can do to stop the wrong traffic and improve the rankings. Thanks for your help. Lyam

Site that's 301 redirected is ranking for brand
We own a number of foreign TLD domains for our brand. They are all 301-redirected to our main .com branded domain. One of them is appearing in our branded search results, outranking out main .com page. To be clear, this is despite there being a 301 redirect from it to the .com page. Any ideas on what is going on here?

Should I Disavow More Links
My SEO website got hit with a very severe penalty about a year ago and it was totally banished from the rankings for all of the money terms like SEO, SEO company and search engine optimisation (before the penalty I ranked in the top 10-15 for all of those phrases, top 3 for SEO company). I was probably hit for being listed in shed loads of paid directories, low quality free directories, footer links in client sites, keyword forum signature links and articles with keyword rich text links. A month or so after I got hit I started trying to clean up my link profile, I got rid of all of the client website links, I changed the link text on the majority of forum signature links and article links, I managed to get rid of about 50 directory links and the ones that I could not get taken down I disavowed - about 150. During that time I sent 2-3 separate reconsideration requests and I got this message each time: "Links to your site violate Google's quality guidelines" After doing all of that work and being rejected I pretty much gave up - things just seemed to get worst, not only was I no longer ranking for the money terms, but all of my blog posts tanked as well. I got my site redesigned and switched to Wordpress - I used 301 redirects and everything but they totally didn't work. My organic traffic went down to less than 50 hits a day - before the penalty I was getting over 300 a day. Then on Saturday just gone, almost exactly a year after I got hit with the penalty I noticed my site ranking in position 23 on Google.co.uk in the UK for the competitive phrase SEO company from being absolutely nowhere and I do mean nowhere. This sign has given me hope and the motivation to get rid of the penalty altogether, update all of my articles, get rid of bad advice in old blog posts and get rid of the rest of the bad links. Thing is that I am nervous to go getting rid of more links and disavowing, what if I do more harm then good? Do you think the penalty has been removed and I should just leave the rest of the bad links or should I continue trying to clean things up? By the way, my website is http://www.seoco.co.uk

Drop In Rankings Evaluation
My cousin asked me to look at his site, http://www.gaport.com/ and I'm wondering what his main website flaws are? I looked at his backlinks, and while I don't know enough to exclude penguin being the cause, I don't think it is. I think it has more to do with duplicate content and lack of keyword optimization. However, before I tell him that, I wanted to get the opinion of this forum, please. Thanks! Ruben

Changes to SEO with disavow?
Has the game changed a lot with the disavow tool I can see people still saying check out what our competitors are doing but with just going through a disavow myself how do you actually know what the correct link diversity is as 0 - 100% of the links could be disavowed. Also could a competitor not just buy a load of spammy links and disavow them to mask there real links. (I know in my backlinks on 150 are good and the rest is disavowed crap)

My page rank dropped by 20 places 1 day before it was cached....any connection?
Hi I've been rather silly and been linking out to other websites for reciprical links. I added about 20 and just discovered some were bad neigbourhoods. On Sunday my rankings tanked but the page was only cached the following day on the Monday. Just wondering if there is any connection. I genuinely did not know that linking out could was bad and have removed all reciprical links as a precaution.

Drop in non-branded organic search April 1
I saw an intense drop in non-branded organic search for major pages on my site on April 1st this year. The homepage wasn't affected and it's not an annual thing. I've attached a screen shot showing the drop. I'm new to the company and recently learned that they had hired a pretty black hat company last year and I'm worried that this is Panda...although the timing seems wrong. Has anyone experienced panda effects between the two updates? I'd love to get some feedback!! 1ry2a.png
