Hello,
In Keyword explorer out of all the possibilities : https://moz.com/blog/announcing-keyword-explorer-mozs-new-keyword-research-tool
Include a Mix of Sources
Only Include Keywords With All of the Keyword Terms
Exclude Your Query Terms to Get Broader Ideas
Based on Closely Related Topics
etc...
Which one should I use to do my keyword research because they all me different possibilities of keywords.
Rand in his article says closely related topic is best for single words like piedmont for example I imagine but what about 2 word keywords like bike tours what is best to use...
Thank you,
-
Definitely wise in that case to be specific and use "Washington D.C." and "the city of Washington" in your content to specify to users (and Google) that your page is about the city, not the state.
-
Hey Rand,
What do you mean by true intent ? Do you mean that if my keyword is "Washington" and one possibility as related keywords is "Washington state" and the other is " the city of Washington", if my content isn't taking about the state at all, it is best to use as a supporting keyword, the city of Washington ?
Thank you,
-
Thank you Rand, I will have a look at all this. By the way if one day you could take one keyword and do a post on exactly how your do the research using the keyword tool and how your write your content I think that would be of interest to a lot of us.
The idea would be to do something on a commercial keyword because when blogging it is seems easier to rank than on commercial keywords. For example to rank on "content marketing" from what I understand you just have to answer the questions people have such as "online content marketing" and cover this topic in depth, "content marketing for beginners " and cover it in depth and so on.... but let's imagine that I want to rank on "Hiking tours in Italy". People don't really have questions, do they ? How do I cover different topics making my page pleasant without having to writing lots of content like someone would do in blog.
Thank you,
-
Keyword research is a pretty broad topic - I'd suggest reading some of the guides on the subject:
-
Thank you Rand for the clarification and just to confirm how to do the keyword research
- Type a keyword and look for the words that go with it based on relevance. For example if my keyword is "Dijon" and in the list of keyword explorer I noticed that "Dijon mustard" is listed. The idea is to make a list of all the words that come up with Dijon, find what is the most relevant for me and then write sentences with with the words that go with Dijon. Correct ?
-
The sorting/relevancy functions for each type of filter aren't exactly the same, so it makes sense you might see a different level of relevancy using different filters.
-
Hi Rand,
I will do that but one more question.
For example I noticed that the relevancy of a word when I do mix of sources is for example 1 but the same word appears in closely related topic is 5 ? why is that ?
Thank you,
-
Hi SEOAnalytics - don't limit yourself to any of them, and there's no one that's best for all scenarios. Valuable keywords can be found in each, and I've seen cases (depending on the topic, and how broad vs. narrow you're aiming with your keyword research) where each one could be said to give "the best" results.
Rather than limiting methodology -- look for the words and phrases that have decent volume and suggest the true intent of the searchers you want to reach. That's the sweet spot.

Optimizing a Webpage without keywords
Hi all, I’m really running into a challenge internally lately in that we have a lot of teams redesigning or building new pages (specificially one team) that do NOT loop our teams in. When we finally get them to work with us, to drive traffic to the pages, they disagree that there must be other ways of optimizing the pages than focusing on keywords with search volume that are relevant to the page. We usually land that they will choose a keyword or two they think a user will search for, we do keyword research and pick something close (because they don’t want to utilize a term that doesn’t make much sense, as they have written the content without involving us from the beginning, but then our search volume is declining). They keep saying there are other ways than changing the paired down content on their page and adding in keywords to the H1 headers, content on page. they mentioned semantic search at one point. For example, https://www.entrust.com/products/entrust-getaccess/ currently ranks around #10 for "single sign on solution." This keyword was on the previous page quite a few times in headers and body copy. Now it appears on the page 3 times after the redesign and is not in the h1. The team does for example want to optimize for this term, but there’s lots of pushback as they want a page with minimal content and little design. Just wondering your thoughts on this. IS this a common challenge you deal with too and any idea on answers as I've tried many with the teams? Thanks, Laura

Potential Keyword Cannibalisation
Hi, I am concerned that our website's rankings are currently being affected by KW cannibalisation. We don't rank too badly for our target keywords but they could, of course, be better, especially as the niche is very competitive! One thing that is bothering me is that our internal pages do not rank well for these KWs and instead it is the homepage appearing in the rankings. This is despite the fact that the internal pages are optimised for the different keywords. Basically the HP is also targeting these same keywords and I was wondering if this is affecting our rankings overall? I am not keen to risk changing the homepage in case our rankings suffer massively and we drop out of Google completely. If anyone could offer some advice then that would be great. Is it simply a case of trying to get external links pointing to these internal pages? Would internal linking to them prove effective as well? Cheers Tom

Suggestions for RU Keyword Research
Does anyone have suggestions for a better RU keyword tool than Yandex and/or is there a way to see exact searches in Yandex's keyword tool? It seems like the data is not at all accurate. For example - we are ranked #2 for a keyword which has over 40,000 monthly searches (searches according to Yandex keyword tool and position confirmed with someone doing a manual search in Russia). However, we are not getting any traffic for this keyword and according to Yandex webmaster tools the keyword only got 10 impressions this past month. Any ideas for me... or would using Google be preferable eventhough people in Russia don't really use Google?

Keyword Research tool time-effort equivalent
SEOMoz's keyword research tool is awesome, but what does the competitiveness actually mean in terms of time/effort? I've read the help file which is great but to get an idea, to rank for highly competitive keywords, is that 12 months of constant effort, link-building and keyword buying or more like 3 months? (how massive is massive?) I know its a hard question to answer, but an idea would be awesome. Thanks to anyone that can answer in advance...

Is "in" a keyword differentiator?
Does google view phrases with "in" in then as different keywords than the same phrase without an "in"? For example: is "great restaurants in chicago" the same keyword as "great restaurants chicago"? Whenever I do research on two phrases like this, they always come up with the same search volume.

Geographically Specific Keyword Research - What do you use?
Does anyone recommend a particular keyword research tool or tools for geographically modified keywords? i.e. Web DesignerF Fargo. I often find that searches focused on services in the area we serve does not get the traffic volume Google's keyword tool needs to provide me with a number. I know the traffic is there, because I see it coming in via analytics. Thoughts? Recommendations?

REAL demand for a keyword?
I once read there is a way to use google adwords to see the REAL demand for a specific keyword, google adwords tool and other tools seem to be not-so-accurate. I just don't remember the exact method, can you please remind me?
