I have looked everywhere to find the answer to this but cannot find it.
How do you get the search engines to treat a domain hack as a word?
e.g if you search "whois" , who.is will return and the url will be highlighted in green showing that the search engines recognise it as a word.
I own a domain hack but when i search the keyword, it never returns with the url highlighted in green.
I would really appreciate any help on this.
Thanks,
Ronan

Hi James,
I know that I can SEO it even if it as a domain hack because i have been doing so and have it ranking second.
I don't have anywhere near that amount of backlinks but I am not trying to rank it on .com, it is showing second in local Ireland Google but I still think that it is strong enough for local search to pick up on the hack as one word.
I guess the real question is, is there some code to be placed on the website or something to be done in webmasters, I don't think it can simply be about the amount of backlinks.
Any thoughts on this will help.
Thanks,
Ronan

Well to be honest if it is a TLD which you can SEO even if it is a domain hack any thing can be possible imo.
.IS is the country code for iceland.
I have seen ranks for .me, .tv and many more wthin search engines.
I mean "www.who.is" has around 911 root domains, 45k links pointing to it.
What kind of numbers and SEO does your domain hack have?
Regards,
James.

It ranks 2nd for it's keyword so I don't think it is to do with click through but I cannot guarantee that, I can only assume seeing that it ranks 2nd and gets visits.
There is other domains that do not get highlighted e.g ma.tt for keyword matt and de.licio.us for delicious but seeing that it does it for who.is, do they know something the rest of us don't because google is obviously picking up the hack as a keyword when it is highlighting it.

Really? But your website appears in the listings yeah? As long as you are listed it should pick it up. If it doesn't my gut would lean towards lack of click-through's based on searches using that word to your domain, but I'd need test it.

Best redirect destination for 18k highly-linked pages
Technical SEO question regarding redirects; I appreciate any insights on best way to handle. Situation: We're decommissioning several major content sections on a website, comprising ~18k webpages. This is a well established site (10+ years) and many of the pages within these sections have high-quality inbound links from .orgs and .edus. Challenge: We're trying to determine the best place to redirect these 18k pages. For user experience, we believe best option is the homepage, which has a statement about the changes to the site and links to the most important remaining sections of the site. It's also the most important page on site, so the bolster of 301 redirected links doesn't seem bad. However, someone on our team is concerned that that many new redirected pages and links going to our homepage will trigger a negative SEO flag for the homepage, and recommends instead that they all go to our custom 404 page (which also includes links to important remaining sections). What's the right approach here to preserve remaining SEO value of these soon-to-be-redirected pages without triggering Google penalties?

Blog not ranking for my name
Hi everyone. I'm new here so apologies if I'm not asking an appropriate question - just let me know! Can anyone help me figure out why my blog (https://www.jamescrowley.net/) isn't ranking at all for my name? I've run it through the standard Moz audit tools and it hasn't picked up any major issues. It ranks fine for my name plus " CTO", but doesn't appear anywhere in the top 50 without that qualifier. I realise there are many other 'James Crowley's to compete with but weirdly even my GitHub profile page appears to rank higher (https://github.com/jamescrowley) I moved the domain a while back (18 months+) and I used to rank highly, but it never seems to have recovered (all the standard redirects are in place, and told Google at the time about the move). Any suggestions would be very much appreciated!

Should I actively filter very similar questions (but not worded identically) and answers for my Q/A Website?
We're setting up a medical Q/A on our website. I anticipate a lot of questions being asked, which we have already answered before through other questions in the Q/A. For example "How do I plan my pregnancy if I am Diabetic?" , "I have been Diabetic for the past 5 years, and am planning to start a family. What should be my approach regarding this? Should I: Write two different answers for each question, but which will eventually have the same meaning. Some answers could end up looking almost identical. Redirect new questions to the old question by posting a link of the answer. Merging the two questions, or deleting on of the two. What is the best solution for maximising SEO Benefits, and minimizing the chances of a penalty?

"Yet-to-be-translated" Duplicate Content: is rel='canonical' the answer?
Hi All, We have a partially internationalized site, some pages are translated while others have yet to be translated. Right now, when a page has not yet been translated we add an English-language page at the url https://our-website/:language/page-name and add a bar for users to the top of the page that simply says "Sorry, this page has not yet been translated". This is best for our users, but unfortunately it creates duplicate content, as we re-publish our English-language content a second time under a different url. When we have untranslated (i.e. duplicate) content I believe the best thing we can do is add which points to the English page. However here's my concern: someday we _will_translate/localize these pages, and therefore someday these links will _not _have duplicate content. I'm concerned that a long time of having rel='canonical' on these urls, if we suddenly change this, that these "recently translated, no longer pointing to cannonical='english' pages" will not be indexed properly. Is this a valid concern?

Google will index us, but Bing won't. Why?
Bing is crawling our site, but not indexing it, and we cannot figure out why -- plus it's being indexed fine in Google. Any ideas on what the issue with Bing might be? Here's are some details to let you know what we've already checked/established: We have 4 301’s and the rest of our site checks out We’ve already established our Robots is ok, and that we are fixing our site map/it's in fine shape We do not see anything blocking bingbot access to the site There is no varnish or any load balancers, so nothing on that end that would be blocking the access We also don't see any rules in the apache or the .htaccess config that would be blocking the access

http://www.directcolors.com/applications/concrete-countertops/top I understand that the **top **could be referring to an actual link that brings users to the top of a page, but on these pages there is no such link. Am I missing something?1
