Meta descriptions

When writing a meta description is it ok to use keywords that are not on the page or site itself?
-
You should write your description in a way that will make people want to click on your link when they see your description in the search results.
But be aware that Google won't necessarily pick your description to show—it shows what it thinks best matches what the searcher is looking for. If your description is heavy on keywords that are not on the page and does not contain words that reflect the content of the page, it probably won't get shown.
-
Not using the specific keywords which are embedded on a web-page is fine, writing a description which fails to accurately convey the individual (and unique) value of a web page is not fine.
Meta Descriptions no longer have a 'special place' within Google's various ranking algorithms and modules. A lot of people argue that at most, Meta Descriptions were only ever weighted as heavily as descriptive body content - and that in fact they never held any special ranking significance at all.
So why bother writing them at all? If they don't influence rankings, they won't influence your SEO right? WRONG
Meta Descriptions, if well written (if they seem to be thematically related to the specified page's content, if they're not overly promotional and they aren't full of grammatical errors) - are the most likely on-page element to be chosen to act as a SERP (Search Engine Ranking Position) snippet within Google / Bing's search results. Basically, the descriptive text you see under each hyperlink in Google's results.
A Meta Description won't change your page's ranking position for a given keyword (well, maybe under some very niche circumstances - but it's not common). That being said; a Meta Description which is nicely written, may entice Google's users (or the users of another search engine) to click on your search result instead of another one on the same page.
As such, Meta Descriptions can help your existing rankings to work harder for you (without actually shifting rankings around!)
Meta Descriptions should be written with the sole purpose of enticing users to click through from Google's results to your site. Whether that involves using your on-page keywords, or using alternative keywords - or using no keywords at all, only you can know. Write Meta descriptions from a CRO (Conversion Rate Optimisation) perspective and not from an SEO (Search Engine Optimisation) perspective.
You're trying to 'convert' Google's users, into your own SEO traffic. That off-site conversion is the key, not trying to use Meta Descriptions to increase your rankings (they won't alter your ranking positions)

Does personalization that changes meta data display in SERPs impact SEO?
My company has been rolling out personalization at the page level across our site using behavior paths embedding content from cross pathed pages as well as customer journey mapping. The dynamically generated content doesn’t change the URLs. In the SERPs I’m seeing that our title tags and meta descriptions also seem to be dynamically generated even though we have these elements crafted. The way our elements are crafted: Title tag: descriptive Keyword rich phrase | Brand Meta description: Keyword rich, grammatically correct description tied to title tag and page content for consistency. I search a specific URL: Title tag display: Keyword rich phrase | Brand – Brand Meta description display: Random content pulled from the page I search a phrase that includes Brand + keywords in the URL: Title tag display: Title tag we crafted Meta description display: Meta description we crafted I search a phrase that includes Brand + keywords in the title tag: Title tag display: Title tag we crafted Meta description display: Random content pulled from the page Does Google crawl the page and digest the title tag and meta description we crafted? Or is Google going to ding us for having the brand twice, exceeding the length of the title tag, etc.? I have been searching the interwebs, forums and the cosmos, but the only information I’m finding is related to the fact that URLs are changing and how that would impact SEO. That’s not the case for us. Thoughts on how all this is impacting our SEO efforts?

How are 279 Characters Displaying in a Meta Description?
I was looking at some SERPs, and I saw one of our competitors had 279 characters displaying in their meta-description. Everyone else (including the people ranking higher than this person) were displaying the usual number. How is that possible? I didn't think google every displayed that much. Screenshot attached. Where is this SERP listing of a product description coming from?
Google is showing a manufacturers product description below the ads and before the organic listings that I have not seen before, see the attached image. The bad part is instead of attributing it to the manufacturer it is attributing to one of our competitiors and placing thier link with the text. 1. Why is this happening? I can't find any schema or other mark-up on the page explaining where this content is coming from. 2. How do I combat this? I have not seen this type of SERP before. Any help is appreciated. Losing rank to Scholarly Articles and Keyword Description Stuffing
I began reviewing the rankings this week and noticed that many of our #1,#2, etc rankings had been bummed down as a whole. After reviewing many of the search terms it seems Google has begun to rank a group named Scholarly Articles in the #1 position. Has anyone else noticed this change? Secondly, many of the rankings we have lost are due to some competitors stuffing their descriptions with keywords. #1 Rank Description Failure Analysis; Scanning Electron Microscopy & EDS Analysis. Paint Chip Analysis and Evaluation; Paint Tests Physical Testing of Paints. #1 Rank Description NACE certified coatings inspector, paint inspector, coating inspector, coatings inspector, lining, failure analysis, survey, corrosion, rust, evaluation, testing, expert Is this a possible glitch occurring with the new humming bird release and has anyone else noticed an issue like this? It dropped our #1 ranks from 37 to 23 overnight. Thanks

I thought META KEYWORDS tag was dead?
http://www.wpkube.com/wordpress-seo-plugin/ this article just came out as a one of the many guides to Yoast's Wordpress SEO. I am surprised it mentioned: Use meta keywords tag: Google reportedly doesn’t use the keywords that your enter for your posts but as Google isn’t the only show in town, you might want to check this box.Recommendation: check I stopped using meta keywords tag because Google doesn't use it any more, plus if you are in a competitive field by using keywords you are giving free keyword research to your competitors? Does any one still use meta keywords here? If so why? Google doesn't use keyword tags, has anyone experienced a dis-benefit to meta-keywords tag from Google ie. dropped rankings etc.?

LMSCT.com The advantage of the shorter domain is that it is 13 years old.
so now for the SEO - which one do you think is better? is Exact Match Domain a better thing for SEO or can I get away with a shorter domain? I can buy both, but which one should I build on as the main domain? any advice would be much appreciated, as well as the PROS & CONS of both.0 -

Google decreased use of Meta Descripiton Tag
Over the past month or so I have noticed that Google is not using the meta description for my pages but is instead pulling text from the actual page to show on the SERP. Is Google placing less emphasis on meta descriptions?
